Advantages: Classic fragrance, Quality brand

Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste! - This is a very strong oriental "night time" fragrance

Everyone has heard of brands like Estee Lauder and Lancôme, but it still seems that many people I know have never heard of of the brand "Guerlain".

Guerlain is actually one of the worlds oldest perfume houses, and one of my favourite perfumes is a fragrance of theirs called Shalimar. This was actually first launched in 1925, which was almost fifty years before I was even born, but is has stood the test of time because it is what could be regarded as a "classic".

I first discovered Shalimar by accident when I was about 18, I was given a tester in a department store, and tried it and absolutely loved it. It is nice sometimes to wear something a little bit more unique and different to all your friends, who are all wearing a perfume based upon the latest trend or ad campaign.

Shalimar is quite "full on", and the best way to categorise it would be to say that if you like Chanel No5 or Opium, or Coco then you will probably like Shalimar. It is described as an oriental fragrance and I would describe it as "spicy".

Based on this I believe that it is only really suitable for wearing on night outs and big occasions and isn't really suitable for daytime use.

Another thing I like about Shalimar is... with some other perfumes using the shower gel, body lotion etc in the same range can often be a bit of a clash, because even though they should smell the same, there's a slight anomaly on the fragrance between the products. But... with Shalimar I have tried the shower gel and deodorant stick (and there are other products in the range) and all smell identical because it's a top quality brand.

This isn't the cheapest perfume you will encounter - Averaging about £40 for a 50ml bottle, but it is an amazing perfume from an amazing perfume house.

I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase this with trying it first, as it is a very unique fragrance and a matter of personal opinion as to whether this is right for you.

Once you have tried Shalimar, if you decide that it isn't right for you, then I would recommend you try "Samsara" as an alternative which is also another Guerlain fragrance, but is much "lighter".

Summary: It's a love it or hate it fragrance, but personally I love it!
