I purchased this perfume the very day that Hollister opened up here in Aberdeen and I don't regret it one bit. I'd heard very mixed reviews about it beforehand, but due to the fact we didn't have a Hollister here and I'm rarely in the states, I couldn't form my own opinion until a few months ago. That opinion? I love it!
Malaia by Hollister is (very poorly) described as "Malaia is the natural beauty of a sundrenched Hollister girl. The essence of crisp water, sheer florals, and soft woody tones. The allure of the ocean and the California sun."
Obviously, this doesn't really give you any idea of what the perfume smells like at all, it's a very vague description and to be honest with you, I think it's due to the sheer complexity of the fragrance.
Malaia comes in a very simple glass bottle (check the image above) with an optional atomizer attachment in the box. The box is also just as pictured, therefore I won't go into too much detail, but it is simply a cylindrical tin with a beautiful cardboard print round it and states the brand and product name. Inside the box, you get a small piece of card with instructions to keep the bottle upright when the atomizer attachment is in place to prevent leaking.
The perfume itself is a clear liquid and when first sprayed, gives off a beautiful floral scent. I personally can't stand floral scents, so it's strange to me that I like this one, but it seems to be far more complex than just florals. After a minute or two, you start to smell the woodsy earth tones and the floral notes settle down a bit. Within 5 - 10 minutes you even start to smell the delicious aroma of vanilla. These notes combine a beautiful scent that is impossibly difficult to describe, but take my word for it - it's delicious!
After the perfume has settled on your skin for an hour or so, you may even begin to detect some fruity notes, mainly melon and orange. This seems to only happen with certain skin types though (a few of my friends also use this perfume, some have mentioned that they don't get the fruity notes). Personally, my skin seems to react very well with this perfume and by the end of the day I am left smelling of citrus fruits and vanilla with the subtle addition of florals.
I've also found that this perfume has the best staying power of any perfume I've ever tried. I can spray it once in the morning and still be able to smell it the next morning when I jump in the shower. The staying power isn't to be confused with how overpowering the scent is though. This is a very subtle scent and you won't run the risk of it becoming overpowering unless you spray yourself repeatedly.
The bottle comes in 2 sizes 1fl oz./30ml (£24) and 2fl oz./60ml (£32) and can only be purchased in Hollister stores or on the website. The website will only ship perfume within the US though, so if you live in the UK (which most of us on here do), then you'll have to wait until you get to a Hollister store to try it out for yourself.
One last thing, this scent drives my boyfriend wild, so if you ladies are looking for something a bit different to surprise your man with, then this could be it!
I really won't bother with pros/cons like I usually do, simply because I can't rate this perfume highly enough and can't find any faults with it whatsoever, therefore, everything about it is a pro to me.
Thanks so much for reading!
