This must rank as one of the most sumptuous fragrances for men ever created. I remember my first bottle, when my mum gave it to me as a birthday gift. I am always dubious when my mum buys clothes or fragrances, but this time she chose well!

Hugo Boss is a name synonomous with quality. I always picture men in suits, walking around New York, laden with shopping bags and swanky mobile phones in their hands.

The bottle:

A sleek glass bottle with a beautiful sheen to it. It is that kind of glass that you want to keep stroking. The curves on the bottle are very shapely and verging on the sexy. There is an amazing depth of colour to the bottle too, which adds an air of mystique.

How to use:

It is a powerful scent, so I like to spray three dashes around the neck and occasionally, if I am feeling naughty, squirt a little onto my chest. It sprays easily and comes out in a fine mist which absorbs into the skin like a sea breeze.

The smell:

The smell is quite unworldly. I love the way it captures woody tones yet manages to retain a certain sweetness as well. The smell is chic, expensive and refined. Delicate earthy aromas mingle with a subtle fruity aroma to create an enticing blend. You will find yourself wanting to sniff yourself for ages afterwards.

Where to buy:

Debenhams is a good bet, though shop around online for the better deals. You can pick up a 30 ml bottle for around £18 if you do enough research online. The scent is also available in 50 or 90ml bottles.

Who to buy for:

Perfect for birthdays for the discerning male. This is a safe bet fragrance and will leave your man feeling quite the gent.
