When it comes to buying me Birthday presents those who know me are well aware that I love receiving new perfumes. It isn't just the opportunity to own a number of different smells to suit my mood, I also love perfume for the beautiful bottles that it comes in which look lovely smattered around my dressing table. As a result when I received a bottle of this Jean Paul Gaultier 'Classique' last year I instantly fell in love with the feminine lines and modern packaging of this product before I had even taken a sniff of the perfume within.
This perfume or 'eau de parfum' to give it its proper name, comes presented in a metal tin which is a dusty pink in colour and is ribbed on the top and bottom with the 'Jean Paul Gaultier' logo imprinted onto the front. Personally I love this presentation which is identical in style to that of the male line of fragrances (with the exception of the pink theme), as I think it is quirky way to package a bottle of perfume which is far more hardwearing and durable than the standard cardboard box. As a result I display my bottle next to the tin on my dressing table for maximum effect. The perfume bottle is actually sat on the base of the tin and therefore to get it out you need to pull the entire top of the tin off the base.
Inside the tin, my bottle was stood upright in a neatly sculptured piece of plastic which moulded itself around the base of my bottle. The bottle itself I have to say is beautiful in design in my opinion. The glass is sculptured to mimic that of the female form with a perfectly curved hourglass figure and small waist. Though the glass is pink in colour the front is illustrated with the lace detail of a bodice and this is a darker pink in colour and is slightly textured to the touch. On the top of my bottle the spritzer is silver and feels sturdy to the touch. Unlike other perfumes this one is protected using a small metal clip which prevents the dispenser from being pushed down and despite the fact that this can be removed and discarded when you open the bottle I have kept mine on for looks alone.
The scent of this particular eau de parfum is very feminine in my opinion and one which really suits that of the ladylike bottle. Jean Paul Gaultier state that this fragrance has top notes of rose which are accompanied with middle notes of orchid and base notes of vanilla and soft wood. In my opinion, when I first spray this perfume on my skin the first scents that I notice are those of the rose and orchid. These floral notes smell summery and remind me of a summer garden on a warm evening which is the perfect pick me up for this cold winter weather. Once the perfume has begun to settle, I begin to notice the deeper notes particularly the vanilla which smells warm on my skin. The soft wood gives this perfume an almost musky undertone and ensure that the scent smells strong enough to be noticeable when I walk into a room.
Although the floral notes of this perfume would suggest that this is a fragrance that can be used at all times of day, personally I find that this is a fragrance which leans itself more to night time wear as the sexy lingering notes smell lovely on my skin and are quite provocative in my opinion when worn with a slinky dress. That being said I do wear this perfume at all times of day especially if it is the first bottle that I pick up in the morning. I would struggle to attribute this scent to a particular woman or age but would say that it is a perfect scent for a lady who likes to feel feminine and sexy.
I always rate perfumes based on their staying power as I have had many experiences where I have smelt a lady before she has even entered a room and wondered what she is wearing. This particular perfume has good staying power in my opinion and, having sprayed it on first thing this morning I can strongly smell the floral and vanilla notes which smell warm on my skin. Over the course of a day, I generally find that the floral notes fade leaving the vanilla sweet scent and I find this less obvious to smell. However, this could be because the perfume is on me and as I understand it your nose gets used to a smell over time and is less likely to pick it up. The delightful thing about this eau de parfum is that it seems to linger on my clothes and therefore when I greet people over the course of the day I am often asked what scent I am wearing as little bursts of it waft up from my clothing.
Although I rarely buy myself perfume, tending to think it is always a nice thing to ask for on such occasions as Birthdays and Christmas, I do normally look around for the best deal online before I make a purchase. This particular fragrance is currently available in both bottle sizes of 50ml and 100ml for prices on Feel Unique of £56.50 and £63.75 comparatively. Although not cheap, I do think that this is a reasonable price to pay particularly considering the staying power of this fragrance and the beautiful presentation. My bottle has lasted for around six months already with only around a third of the bottle being used therefore I believe that the staying power and durability of this fragrance make it worth the investment.
As I have struggled during this review to find any fault with this perfume I would recommend it and would award it a full five stars. The beautiful bottle and lovely feminine charm of this perfume make it a perfect gift and one which I have been really pleased with.
I hope this review has been of some help and thanks for reading! x
