Advantages: Fragrance, distinction and endurance

Disadvantages: Makes me sneeze in summer, smell can be too much if used a lot

I have used Joop for a number of years now. It's one of those brands with an extremely distinctive smell. I find that a lot of aftershave/eau de toilette brands have very similar smells, and they tend to merge to the point where I find it hard to discern between them. Joop, however, has an almost sweet and powerful smell, and thus it is important to be careful about how much you use!

The distinctive smell is lovely as far as I am concerned, and I generally hear positive remarks about it. My wife loves it, although we both agree that if I wear it every single day then it does become a bit too much, and this is where I think the brand falls down. The fragrance of it is so strong that it gives you a bit of overkill, and this is a disappointment.

Also, surprisingly enough, I suffer from hayfever, and I find that Joop is a bit of a catalyst for this, whereas other eau de toilette brands aren't. As a result, I tend to wear Joop during the winter months, and switch to Issey Myake or something similar for the summer. It is a shame, but then it also coincides with giving us a bit of a break from the overpowering nature of Joop.

The Joop eau de toilette has a bit of staying power. Once you put it on, the smell will stay for quite a while. This is partly due to the strong smell, but also to do with the alcohol it contains. A lot of aftershaves have little or no alcohol as they are designed to be sprayed or put on the face, where eau de toilette ranges will likely have more alcohol as they are more for the neck or wrists or general spraying, as I like to do! Joop is very pink in colour, and the clear bottle means you can see how much you have left. It is a dumpy bottle, which I find quite handy for transportation.

The smell, other than being sweet, has hints of orange and even cinnamon. Although not a fan of cinnamon itself, you can barely smell it in this. Vanilla and amber come through as subtle smells, which complement it very much, and it is perhaps the vanilla that I like the most.

Overall, I rate Joop very highly, but in small doses, and be careful if you have hayfever (or perhaps it's just me!) It is a popular and distinctive brand, and well worth buying. I haven't actually bought any in a while, and prices will vary, but you should expect to pay around the £20 or £30 mark, depending on whether you buy it on its own or as part of a Joop fragrance set.

Summary: Great eau de toilette in small doses

I find Joop rather overpowering and (dare I say it) tend to associate it with, shall we say, older men.
