I first came across this product when I was given one of those Aftershave/ Eau De Toilette minature sets at Christmas contaning various different samples of fragrance and, out of all of them (most of which whose names currently escape me), this was the one that stood out most of all. The name alone just does it for me: Dirty English; what an awesome, masculine name for a fragrance! It puts me in mind of Guy Ritchie Cockney Gangsta movies, hard men like Vinnie Jones or Jason Statham and kind of sounds like the sort of scent you really wouldn't want to be messing with after a couple of pints. Does it live up to its name? Maybe not so much ~ but still it is a powerful fragrance that certainly appeals to me!
I had trouble finding this in any of my local shops and had almost despaired of getting any more for when my minature sample ran out ~ which it was prone to do quite quickly considering the number of times I was using it. Then I found it on the Internet of all places, more importantly Amazon, and at a bargain price of just £11.99 for 50 ml.
Described as the "appealing scent of bad boys all across the world" (if that is the case, why no big advertising campaign? Why has it had very little notoriety that I have heard of?), it's Notes (I imagine these are the ingredients that make up the smell?) include "Peppered Mandarin, Blue Cypress, Black Leather, Ebony Wood, Amber Musk." Sounds delightful, right? Like some kind of hideous combination reminiscent of Old Spice or something your dad would wear.....and yet, this couldn't be further from the truth!
Actually, this has a very refreshing scent that puts me very much in mind of L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme, an Eau De Toilette that I used to use a lot way back in the nineties. It has a clean scent that is at once woody and sweet and not at all like anything else I have smelled of late which all adds to its appeal! There are a lot of generic fragrances out there that all smell very similar or, at the very least, lack a personality of their own but one thing you CANNOT say about Dirty English is that it in any way lacks character! It is at once something different, something new and most importantly something unique. I do suspect, from the bottle design and the whole style of the bottle and packaging, that its target market may well be Chavs and City Boyz meaning that someone like myself, at thirty-eight, is probably too old for this fragrance but I have never really bought into this whole concept of certain Aftershaves and Eau De Toilettes being solely designed for a set, target market! It is strongly of this reviewer's opinion that if you like how it smells then who it is aimed at shouldn't put you off!
One other reason that I suspect this may well be subtly aimed at a younger market is by the fact that the product description on Amazon claims that "The bottle features a leather cord ornamented with charms wrapped around the stopper, which doubles as a bracelet." Is anyone actually likely to do this? I don't know. But I do still remember trying to nick VW badges so that we could look like The Beastie Boys or attaching Grolsch bottle caps to the front of our trainers!
Overall, I really like this and the fact that it is fairly cheap into the bargain really doesn't put me off! What Dirty English actually means, I still have no idea and neither does anyone else from what I have seen but that is all by-the-by. All that matters is that this is a very clever fragrance with no pretensions that is exactly what it claims to be! A naughty little fragrance for todays modern, uncomplicated and unsophisticated man!
