"the hour of hush and wonder, when the affectations glow and valor is reborn, when the shadows deepen along the edge of the forest and we believe that, if we watch carefully, at any moment we may see the unicorn" - ''The Hour'' by Bernard DeVoto
VELVET HOUR is a smoky evening fragrance. I did like the overall impression it creates, even though it is so well-blended I can''t separate most of the individual scent notes in it. I''d say that VELVET HOUR is a rich oriental fragrance, with a vintage-type powdery floral undertone to it. Overall I think that it gives an exciting contrast between feminine and masculine accords.
When I first apply VELVET HOUR I feel a bit overwhelmed as all of the scent notes seem to develop at the same time. At first the only notes in the jumble that I can place with any certainty are the listed pepper and nutmeg. After ten minutes or so things calm down, to reveal a powdery floral mix. Aside from the freesia I think that there must be rose to give that sweetly powdered air to the fragrance, and I believe that I can pick out some jasmine too.
The dry down more then makes up for the busy start to the fragrance for me, and it lasts for hours; it''s a dark blend of e smoked wood, which mixes wonderfully with the lingering incense and earthy patchouli.
Scent notes: blue pepper, freesia, cashmere incense, patchouli, nutmeg, sandalwood, amber, ebony and woods.
VELVET HOUR has a strong longevity and sillage, which holds up with many high-end brands. For example I remember applying it shortly before going Christmas shopping and eating out, and I could still clearly smell it when I came back home and changed seven hours or so later.
Unfortunately for me, I began to suffer from my usual migraines and sickness whenever I wore this, so I had to give my bottle away. As a result of my experiences with it, I''d strongly advice sticking to wearing VELVET HOUR on chilly autumn/winter evenings as it is stronger and louder then the other Kate Moss fragrances.
I didn''t feel overdone wearing it on cold days - not for work though as the fragrance is fairly strong and carries, so your colleagues probably wouldn''t thank you for wearing it.
I'm a huge fan of Kate Moss' perfumes, so after I bought her first perfume, Kate, which is more of the daytime perfume (could be used as an evening perfume if you wished) I found out she was bringing out a second perfume, Velvet Hour. I love the name too, sounds quite sexy! After good results and feedback from her first perfume, I knew her second perfume was not going to be a disappointment!
The perfume is more designed for evening wear, and I think personally it goes brilliant for any evening occasion whether you are going clubbing with the girls, got a dinner date or even going to a ball!
The presentation of the bottle is beautiful, it has a rounded body with a sea-color effect, with a huge rhinestone on the top of the lid, which puts a nice finishing touch to it. Also, the good thing about this perfume is that no matter which size you buy whether it is 30 ml, 50 ml or even 75 ml, it is the perfect handbag size, which is brilliant because with most perfumes you usually have to tend to buy the smaller ml bottles for it to fit in your handbag or it gets too heavy to carry around all night.
The smell has to be the best thing about the product it self, it has a fresh, musky, sweet smell, which is quite strong smelling, and it is long lasting but the smell is not too sweet, which is really nice. I love the smell so much, even if I'm not going to re-apply or wear it that day, I like to take a cheeky sniff (I know it sounds a little weird, but I just love the smell too much, and has to be one of my favorite affordable perfume smells)
You can buy this perfume, from most perfume stores, like The Perfume shop, which you can now get for a affordable price as this perfume has been out for about three years now, so you will not be be paying any more than £15, maybe £20, depending where you buy it from. You can also find this perfume in Superdrug, Boots, TK MAXX or Savers. I think personally the cheapest place to find this is either TX MAXX or Savers, but if you do not have any luck finding it in a shop, they sell this on Ebay and Amazon too, for about the same price. (but beware you get the greedy ones on Ebay and Amazon that want to charge you a stupid amount like £50 for a 75 ml, which I think is ridiculous to be honest)
Overall, every girl should have this perfume in her perfume collection, (I use mine up so much that I always need to buy a new one every couple of months, or if I see it) Although this perfume is more designed for teenagers and girls in their 20s, and 30s as well (as Kate Moss was in her mid-30s when she designed this) If you see this, buy it and you won't regret it!
I have had quite a few of these Kate Moss perfumes over the years, after I fell in love with the original Kate perfume as soon as I tried it. I was given Velvet Hour as a gift for Christmas last year and was excited to try it as I've only had positive experiences with Kate's perfumes.
This perfume comes in a very cute vintage looking bottle. It is made from a blue coloured semi-transparent glass, which is cut so it has many different sides to it. There is also a blue coloured plastic lid with a blue coloured gem set into the top. Though the finish isn't exactly luxury or expensive looking it does manage to feel modern whilst harking back to the glamour of a bygone age. I love the retro feel of this bottle and also the dark blue that has been chosen as it gives it a lovely mysterious edge.
The fragrance is meant to capture the essence of night. I think the bottle really manages to capture this feeling, as does the scent. The perfume is spiked with woody floral scents which are evocative of a heady moonlit forest and certainly help to capture the feeling of night time.
The top notes are freesia, blue pepper and cashmere incense. These combines beautifully to creates a sumptuous floral smell which is underpinned by a slight spice and softness. This layer feels very warm and inviting, and draws you into the perfume which has a sexy allure to it.
The heart notes are patchouli and nutmeg which are again soft and warm with a little spice. I love this combination and the slightly spice edge is always unexpected so it feels very exciting and mysterious. I think this combination of scents is rather beautiful, clever ad unexpected.
The base notes are sandalwood, amber and ebony wood which combines beautiful to create a more earthy smell. This layer adds a real sensuality to the person as it deepens the scent. The whole thing joins together to create this beautiful image of a flower laden midnight forest.
I have found that this perfume has good staying power and this makes it good value for money. The bottle is actually an ideal shape for keeping in your handbag anyway so this isn't too much of an issue but I always like to know I've got my moneys worth.
This isn't my traditional type of scent. I prefer very fresh, light and powdery florals as they have a real timeless quality. This, however, combines those soft florals with a sense of mystery which feels very reminiscent of night time and has totally captured my heart as an evening perfume. That said, it probably isn't as versatile as you might hope because it is so suited to the evening.
This perfume is available for around £10 for a 30ml bottle, and £15 for a 50ml which really isn't bad considering how expensive perfumes can be these days. I would definitely buy it again or as a gift for someone as it is nice but also inexpensive.
Overall, a lovely perfume that really captures the essence of nigh time.
As an avid perfume collector, I must admit that whilst the smell of the perfume is very important, the style and shape of the perfume bottle is equally crucial. I understand that this perfume was developed in 2008 by perfume designer Emile Copperman and must admit that I had not seen it until I was given this perfume as a gift earlier on this year. Upon receiving it, I was instantly drawn to the delicate bottle and the promise of things to come, with Kate Moss as the owner this perfume wither promised to be a success or a complete, messy flop.
The Perfume Bottle
This perfume is packaged in a small and shiny dark blue box illustrated with paler blue in what appear to be wafts of smoke with the Kate Moss logo stamped on the front of the box. The lid of the box can be lifted to display the gem inside, a deep blue and almost jewel shaped bottle with a dark blue lid. This lid can simply be pulled off to allow the perfume to be sprayed with a standard push down spray.
The perfume can be purchased according to the amount required and comes in the standard 30ml, 50ml or 100ml sizes. As it comes in such a compact box, this perfume makes an ideal gift, the box ensuring that the perfume can be wrapped very neatly.
The manufacturers of this perfume claim that it contains scents which include blue pepper and freesia, bycashmere incense, sandalwood, amber, ebony wood, patchouli and nutmeg; these ingredients alone promise to give a musky and spicy fragrance. In my experience upon squirting, the smell is slightly sweet and musky which is perhaps reminiscent of the incense element, however as time goes on the fragrance settles and becomes deep and soft with the nutmeg and sandalwood scents being more prominent.
The scent itself is delicious, not strong enough to dominant a room, but subtle and feminine and gives a hint of seduction.
This perfume can be purchased very reasonably, and although I did not buy a bottle myself I have looked online and seen it retailing for £14.99 for a 100ml bottle from the Perfume Warehouse. This makes this perfume ideal as a day to day scent and means it does not need to be used purely for special occasions.
I think it is important to smell nice and therefore use a squirt of perfume every day regardless of what I am doing that day. The price of this perfume more than justifies this. Upon spraying I have found that the scent comes across as quite noticeable, however I have found that the smell of this perfume seems to die out very quickly over the course of a day. When sprayed onto the wrists or neck I have often found that I can only trace the fragrance at the end of the day as faint incense on the clothing I was wearing that day. This is not down to the amount used and so I now spray the perfume on quite liberally as a result.
Additionally, although the bottle itself is very pretty and delicate, the plastic lid lets the quality of this product down. The lid looks quite cheap in appearance and only masks what is a sprayer that has a tendency to spit perfume out if not pressed down hard enough.
Whilst I love this perfume, it is a shame that some of the minor details let this product down for me; therefore I am scoring a generous 4 stars out of 5.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my review.

I was bought Kate Moss Velvet hour as a christmas present. The bottle the Perfume comes in is dark blue and and really eyecatching and the shape of the bottle is quite unique, i have a thing about perfumes looking good.
The smell at first i thought was over powering with the first spray i was nearly for giving the bottle away but then i was suprisingly impressed, at first it nearly smells spicy but it settles down and you get the sandlewood and amber smells coming through and is a really nice strong but subtle smell.
One complaint i would have is that you need to spray spranginly because although at first it is over powering once it settles it is rather faint and does not last all day therefore i have already from christmas used half the bottle up.
i have seen the perfume advertised in boots for £14.99 and if you are after a change of perfume i would definately reccomend it.
I'm in the small percentage of people who think Kate Moss should never have become a model. She has a figure like a boys, very unpleasant skin and hair you could fry chips in. I've seen better looking girls and women walking around Birmingham city centre. So it's quite surprising how much I like her Velvet Hour perfume, especially considering I bought it by accident!
Velvet Hour was launched in 2008 and by now you can buy the large 100ml bottle for under £20, it's a beautiful perfume which is more for daytime use in my opinion due to the fact that it doesn't last too long on my skin.
When I first spray it I can notice a subtle spicy fragrance, it is quite peppery and this gives a modern and stylish scent. It's quite rich to begin with but this settles down quickly to a more tolerable level and after a few minutes a heady floral fragrance will start coming through, this is thanks to the freesia which is used as a top note and I must say Kate Moss must have used bucketloads of it as this floral scent overtakes everything else within the perfume for a long time!
After this settles down I can notice a strange but lovely fragrance, the perfume starts acting smoky and takes on a scent which reminds me of burning an incense stick. The spicy fragrance comes through fantastic at this point and I can definitely detect both nutmeg and sandalwood, two notes which are mentioned on the box the perfume came in. These round the fragrance off nicely and give it a gorgeous musky scent which lingers in with the more pronounced floral tones, as I have mentioned the perfume itself doesn't last very long but the muskiness does linger even after the other notes have all but disappeared.
The scent you are left with as Velvet Hour begins to run it's course is a woody and slightly oriental one. It makes this a sexy and very feminine perfume, I like how well the different notes flow into one another as although it makes describing the perfume difficult it's a delight to wear. You could easily turn this into your signature scent as it's one which is easy to recognise once you've got the original scent worked out.
For evening use this wouldn't be very practical as it does need to be reapplied quite often, having said that there small 30ml bottles available which would be much more convenient for carrying around in your handbag on a night out. This is an Eau de Toilette, I'm not sure if Velvet Hour is available in a Parfum version but it would be ideal if it is as the fragrance would last much longer.
The bottle is a bit basic, actually that's the only think I'm not so impressed about Velvet Hour. It reminds me of a Britney Spears bottle of perfume which I have upstairs, I can't remember which one now and can't really be bothered to check! Also the spray nozzle is a bit temperamental and the perfume can spit a little when I apply it, this could be down to a dodgy bottle I have but it does show that the overall quality of the bottles may not be very consistent.
£19.60 (100ml bottle) from Amazon.
I've just treat myself to this fragrance today as I saw it on offer at Semi Chem for £4.99 for a dinky 15ml bottle. What attracted me to this particular product at first was the cute size, just right in my clutch bag for a night out.
Kate Moss has a number of fragrances on the market, which include her original offering Kate Moss, Kate Moss Summer, Velvet Hour and her more recent Kate Moss Wild Meadow (which I also own).
Velvet Hour is and eau de toilette by Coty and was first released in 2008. The bottle is very stylish for a celebrity perfume, it is a deep almost navy blue, and has a slight vintage feel to it, quite a tradtional looking bottle, which would not be out of place on a old fashioned dressing table.
This scent, which is a woody floral, was created with the scent of night in mind, as supposedly this is Kate's favourite time of day, hence the name, Velvet Hour.
Velvet hour opens with top notes of freesia which is totally obvious and rather heady but the blue pepper and cashmere incense really give this fragrance a lovely warmth, rather than being overly flowery.
After the top notes begin to mellow, your senses are then enveloped by patchouli, nutmeg is also present which is more of a slight burst then it fades and I'm unable to hang on to the smell.
This fragrance then dries down further into the sensual smell of sandalwood, amber and ebony wood, however it is the sandalwood which really stands out at this point. The mid notes combined with the more long lasting base notes make for a very delicious, sensual perfume, perfect for evening.
The fragrance is not very long lasting, a few hours at the most, but this isn't a problem as the bottle can be carried easily to top up during the evening.
Overall I would say this is a great scent, very different from what I would usually choose, as I tend to go along the lines of scents containing more rose or jasmine, but freesia is a nice alternative, combined with the more woody notes.
I would buy this again, but a larger bottle, as I don't think 15ml will last very long, but if I keep it for nights out only then I should be ok.
Kate Moss Velvet Hour is available in 15ml, 30ml, 50ml and 100ml bottles and also a gift set.
Perfume is an individual choice, and must be tested before purchase, as may not work as well for some as it does for others, happy smelling!
When i first heard about this perfume i was very sceptical. Fari enough Kate Moss is a bit of a fashion goddess and knows her make up but perfume!! Surely not.
Anyway i was out shopping in my local town centre and the woman behind the counter offered me a tester of Kate Moss Velvet Hour so i thought why not and boy am i glad i said yes. I think half the problem with these celebrity perfumes is the person or brand they are associated with as that can often put me off the scent (sorry couldn't resist...) so i never actually try them to see what they are like. However the woman in the shop said these celebrity perfumes are often made by the same companys that make all the Armani's and Hugo Boss's so all your getting is a cheaper version of a great perfume.
Back to the perfume, Kate Moss Velvet hour is a wonderfully sexy and sensual scent that always gets me complements when i wear it. The opening of the scent is full of black pepper so it's quite spicy but also at the same time it makes it different to all the other flowery perfumes that are on the market so it helps it to stand out. The perfume doesn't last all day long as i found it to have worn off after around 6-8 hours but to me this still seemed long enough as by the end of it the perfume had changed to quite a sensual and earth scent that was very comforting and captivating.
Also one of the best things about this perfume is the price. It always seems to be on offer somewhere but i picked mine up for £9.99 for the 30ml in Semichem which i thought was a good deal but as i say i'm sure you can get it in other shops for a similar price. Possibly not the best perfume to wear on a first date as it is a little bit different but my husband loves it and my friends always say its seems great on me and matches my fiery (in a good way...) personality.
Great perfume for all ages but try it first to see if its for you
I recieved this little suprise as a gift for Cristmas. My husband is not known for any specific talent in taste,so was a bit nervous as to what this blue bottle was.
I had not heard of it before Christmas, and am not someone who runs out to buy something because it has a celebrity name slapped on it.I am not naive enough to believe they ever get near the product at all.
However, whoever the people are who decided to use Kate Moss' coat tails to ride on,did quite a great job in my opinion.
Description of packaging.
The box I recieved was a very sexy violet deep silky blue, bordering violet.
I opened the very sturdy box to reveal a cylindric yet hegagonal type bottle ,also in a very seductive colour. The bottle feels of very high quality and extremely weighty and thick.
Perfumes do not tolerate suunlight very well and can spoil, maybe this is why they chose a dark tinted bottle?
The bottle is a spray top and comes out quite sensibly, only needing one squirt per wrist. It neither drenches the wrist ,nor needing to be sprayed multiple times.
On spraying ,a beautiful smell that seemed familiar to me rose up to meet me.Delicate ,yet powerful.
Then it hit me,parma violets!!!May not be what everyone gets ,but this is MY review,so I am stating what I was reminded of.
The exact scents incorporated to make this delectable scent are ;-
ebony and wood.
Patchouli is a scent that some of my friends that are seriously into aromatherapy simply can not live without and say it has a strong aphrodisiac efffect for them.Maybe that is where I am getting the impression of sexyness from. Its certainly not from an emaciapated model endorsing the product.
Infact the perfumer that should get the credit is infact Emilie Copperman.
And I think that she is a complete genius for this creation.
It is available in numerous sizes and also as a gift set which includes the EDT and a 150 ml bottle of cashmere body cream.
I have never been a fan of paying over the odds for a side order of body cream that I will forget to use and will take up room somewhere, until I decide to declutter and wang it in the bin.Just buy me two bottles of perfume instead please!!
Kate Moss: Velvet Hour Eau de Toilette!
I have been looking at buying this fragrance for a few months now, as I have used the original Kate Moss fragrance which I really love but it is more of a summer fragrance. Changing my fragrance with the seasons just makes you feel fresh and new and during the cold winter months I like to wear a musky, seasonal fragrance without the usual floral tones that I usually wear. And when I was given the fragrance as a present at christmas I was really happy.
First of all I love the bottle it is a reall quite vintage style bottle, which compliments the notes of the fragrance. It has a somewhat peltrol smell about it but that is cut through and soften by the warm 'wintery' tones of Sandlewood, amber and ebony wood. There are also notes and tones of blue pepper and freesia which give it a feminine womanly warm to the fragrance. I think that this perfume is a really nice fragrance for all occassions and can be worn through out the seasons but I always change my perfume as I feel fresher when I do! A perfect gift for all woman!
The 50ml spray bottle is currently £14.99 at the fragrance shop and I can not find the spray on the boots website. There are also other fragrances in the Kate Moss range including the original which is a lovely summer fragrance and the new vintage perfume!
Thank you for reading my review, I hope it was helpful! :D
