One of mother nature’s great mysteries is how totally unrelated plants and animals can smell or look almost identical. This is what I think whenever I smell products made with lemon verbena (or verveine in French). How can something smell so much like a lemon without actually being a lemon? It’s astonishing.
I love the French toiletries producer l’Occitane and I have a lot of their products. This is mostly due to working just up the road from their Ellesmere Port outlet shop where I’m able to pick up some astonishing bargains. The verveine range was the one which hooked me on L’Occitane because one of my favourite hotels in Portugal stocks verveine shower gel, shampoo and body lotion in the hotel rooms. Sometimes it’s not enough to just get a light whiff of residual lemony scent left from one of those products. Sometimes I want a full on, unadulterated, undiluted lemony blast of goodness and when that happens, I turn to L’Occitane Verveine Eau de Toilette.
I buy this in the small 20 ml bottles because they are a perfect size for travel. The product comes in a straight sided glass bottle with a spray cap. The spray cap has a close fitting metal cap over it to stop it accidentally being pressed. The shape mimics the small bottles used for hotel toiletries with straight sides and curved shoulders. The bottle is embossed with verbena leaves on two sides and ‘L’OCCITANE’ down one of the long, narrow sides. It’s perfectly shaped to slip into my travel washbag.
Describing this fragrance must be the easiest job in the world. You know how hard it is to describe a complex perfume, highlighting the top, middle and base notes? Well this is easy. It’s just LEMON! lots and lots of lovely lemon. Because it’s from verbena instead of from actual lemons, it’s a fresher, less ‘oily’ or peely type of lemon scent - like pure lemon juice with a touch of ‘fizz’.I can’t say why it smells ‘fizzy’ but if you sniff this you’d probably agree with me that it does. For the purists there’s also little bit of geranium and lemon tree oil to give this a bit more lasting power but you’re going to smell lemon and it will lift your spirits almost instantly.
A 100 ml bottle of this will set you back 42.00. From memory, I think I paid around 5.00 for my 20ml bottle and I have a couple more in my cupboard for when this one runs out. If you sometimes seek for simplicity in a perfume and you like citrus scents, this is a great choice.
