Review of Karl Lagerfeld Sun Moon and Stars for Women Eau de Toilette Spray
This fragrance had been loitering around in my drawer for a year or two. It had originally been given to me in a bunch of perfumes by a friend who, knowing how I love my fragrances, knew I wouldn't be offended by her cast offs! She was having a massive clear out and this had been given to her by her husband who was also part of the clear out...but that is another story!
I am not sure why I originally banished Sun, Moon and Stars to the depths of my fragrance drawer, but when I rediscovered it recently, I was rather surprised as it is gorgeous! Perhaps my tastes have altered or I simply overlooked it in my excitement at receiving a whole bag of goodies.
Sun, Moon and Stars is presented in a good quality, dark blue glass sphere which is embossed with raised designs of suns, moons and stars. I feel the bottle is a little old fashioned and yet quite quirky in design, it reminds me of a miniature apothecary's bottle with its shape and depth of colour. The spray mechanism is covered by a fairly chunky gold coloured stopper. The bottle comes complete in a similarly designed dark blue cardboard box with, with the perfume name in a gold font.
This fragrance has been around since 1994. It is an interesting scent in that it is an oriental fragrance with a floral heart.
First spritz of the scent gives me a refreshing, fairly sharp floral scent, with tones of rose, lily of the valley and carnation. Then the deeper heart notes of jasmine, orange blossom and pineapple come to the fore. The base notes, the part of the fragrance that gives the depth, are really to my taste in this fragrance. I am a bit of an old hippy at heart and fragrances with musk, sandalwood or amber always appeal to me, Sun, Moon and Stars has all three within the base notes of the fragrance, plus they are blended with vanilla, another favourite of mine. This blend produces a warm, exotic scent.
I have found this fragrance to be fairly long lasting, obviously this depends on your skin type, but I find I can spray this in the morning and still detect it mid-afternoon. To me, that is more than acceptable for an Eau de Toilette.
As with all fragrances, this is best stored in a cool, dry place and out of sunlight, on your dressing table is not necessarily the best place and although many fragrance bottles are designed to be shown off, the actual fragrance benefits from being kept in a drawer or cupboard.
A quick web search has brought up a widely differing set of prices.
I based my search on the size I own, 100ml. The prices range from around £14/£15 to over £40, so it definitely worth shopping around.
Lovely though the fragrance is, I wouldn't dream of spending £40 on it!
**My Thoughts and Conclusion**
In my opinion, this fragrance is a modern classic, I love it and I would wear it at any time of the day. I think many users would consider it more of a day time perfume than evening, but of course this sort of thing is down to personal taste.
I am always a little hesitant about recommending fragrances as taste differ and the scents that smell great on a friend can be quite different on you. As the prices vary quite dramatically, I would advise readers to try a tester in a High Street store to check whether the fragrance suits you and then shop around on line for a good deal.
What I will say is that this particular fragrance is an unusual blend of scents and I would recommend it to those who like floral yet spicy fragrances.
Sun, Moon and Stars is a lovely fragrance and one I am very pleased to have discovered.
Thank you for reading
