One of the all-time great perfumes

Although my all time favourite perfume is, and always will be, Miss Dior, I do wear a couple of other fragrances from time to time. For days in the office, I tend to choose Chanel No 19 which is a brisk and business-like fragrance but for evenings, my other perfume of choice is Arpège from Lanvin. Sadly, it's getting harder and harder to find this fragrance in the shops because it seems to have been superseded by Eclat d'Arpege, a completely different kind of scent, but so far I've managed to keep myself supplied with this delightful and timeless fragrance from online stockists.

A brief history of the perfume

Jeanne Lanvin was a French couturière working in Paris in the 1920s and '30s. Arpège was created by Andre Fraysse and Paul Vacher in 1927 at the behest of Jeanne Lanvin, in celebration of Marguerite, her daughter's thirtieth birthday. Madame Lanvin's instruction to the perfumers, Andre Fraysse and Paul Vacher, was that the budget was immaterial but she wanted perfection. When Marguerite, who was a opera singer, first smelled the perfume she declared it was like an arpeggio and thus the name was born.

The bottle which was designed by a well-known artist of the day, Armand Albert Rateau, is very art deco in style being a round black flagon shape with a gold stopper and a gold stylised image of Madame Lanvin and her daughter, created by artist Paul Iribe. This image was then adopted not just for the perfume but also as the company logo. As soon as this perfume was launched, it became an immediate hit and although the fragrance was reformulated in 1993, this time by Hubert Fraysse, the scent has remained largely the same as the original concept.

      Price and availability

This fragrance is very difficult to find in high street stores but is still sold online, including on Amazon, where it's currently retailing at £29.65 for 100ml. It is also available from other reputable online stockists such as Cheap Smells and Fragrance Online for a similar price.

      Notes

Top notes: aldehydes, bergamot, neroli, honeysuckle and peach
Heart notes: jasmine, rose, lily of the valley, ylang ylang, coriander, and tuberose
Base notes: sandalwood, vanilla, tuberose, vetiver, patchouli, and styrax.

      My opinion

Before I get on to the actual fragrance, I must make a mention of the bottle because it's so stylishly elegant. The round black flagon with it's gold top is a beautiful art deco design and even today, eighty years after its conception, it still looks good, a testament to Armand Albert Rateau's artistic abilities. The simple gold Lanvin emblem of Jeanne Lanvin and her daughter embossed onto the flagon has a poignancy about it, representing as it does a mother and child, both now long gone from this world.

With regard to perfume, I much prefer the classic, French couture house fragrances to the more modern perfumes which are far too sugary and sweet for my taste. In my opinion, Arpège is not just an arpeggio, it's a veritable symphony of scent. This is a warm and sensual fragrance which in some ways is slightly reminiscent of Chanel No 5, although without the jasmine heaviness of that scent which can be rather cloying. Although not a very heavy perfume, to my mind this scent comes into its own during the winter months, although it is also suitable for summer evenings.

When first applied, there is an initial citrus-like sharpness to the fragrance coming from the aldehydes, neroli and bergamot but this is tempered by a slight sweetness derived from the honeysuckle and peachy notes. As the scent develops, the floral notes take centre stage, with the lily of the valley becoming more prominent, backed up by the faintly dry softness of roses and just the right amount of jasmine to give the scent depth but not enough that it become too overpowering. By the time the base notes develop, about half an hour later, the perfume has gained an exotic warmth as the sandalwood and patchouli come into play whilst the tuberose allows the fragrance to retain a floral element with just a hint of damp earth added into the mixture. The whole ensemble is of a floral, slightly oriental opulence.

This long lasting fragrance definitely isn't a perfume for anyone under the age of thirty. It's an elegant and sophisticated fragrance without any hint of youth or innocence about it and is much more suited to mature women of experience. This is a beautiful perfume which is all about intimacy and seduction as it conjures up sensual images of winter firelight, intimate dinners in shadowy restaurants and candlelit bedrooms with rumpled silk sheets.

Ah, well, a woman can dream and wearing this fragrance, those dreams just might come true!
