“ Brand: Lush „
I'm a huge fan of the store Lush, and am trying to sample every product they make. This includes their considerable range of perfumes. Lush make several fragrances under the Gorilla Perfume name: some of these are relatively new but others have been around for much longer, since the days of B Never (Lush's sister company, now defunct). Dear John is one of these.
This fragrance is available exclusively on the Lush/Gorilla Perfume website. It used to be available in-store, but a lot of perfumes have been removed from store now because they don't sell as well. It costs £13 for a spritzer of the perfume, £26 for the bottle and £6 for the solid version, which is roughly in line with the other fragrances in the range. I have the sample bottle which cost only two or three pounds.
I admit the name of the perfume didn't immediately draw me to it, and neither did the description. Dear John is described as being "born from the conflicting feelings of love and abandonment" and being for "all the men we've ever adored". We've all heard of the concept of a 'Dear John' letter, and I guess this is what Lush are trying to get across in this fragrance, though I'm not sure why it is supposed to appeal! Like most of Lush's perfumes, it is unisex, and after sampling it I would agree with this.
Dear John contains a number of unusual ingredients: it is made up of lime, pine, coffee, coriander, clove, cedarwood and vetivert. I've never heard of coffee in a perfume before! When I first apply it, I can detect the fresh fruity lime scent with a spicy undertone and a hint of coffee. The coffee isn't overpowering though and adds richness to the scent rather than being overly bitter. Over time, the lime fades; the coffee remains and the spicy darker aspects of the scent come out, including vetivert and woody cedarwood. Coriander and clove make the scent more interesting.
The fragrance lasts for a number of hours on the skin, turning slightly musky towards the end. I can't stop sniffing myself when I wear this - I must get some funny looks, but it's so unusual and lovely that I can't help it!
I definitely recommend Dear John. Don't be put off by the strange name and bizarre inspiration - sample it for yourself! Unfortunately, it isn't available in the miniature perfume exclusive set, so the best way to try it is to add a sample vial in your next online order.
