Ok, first things first. This perfume comes in a rather tacky white bottle with something that looks like a plastic golden orb for a lid and is accompanied (if your local branch of Debenhams is anything like mine) by an equally tacky ad campaign. And whilst the name 'Truth or Dare' is probably intended to sound mysterious and sexy, it has a something of a teenage ring to it. Or maybe I'm just old and grumpy.
That being said, I've always rather liked Madonna, so I tried the tester of this perfume- more out of curiosity than anything. The first thing I noticed was that this is a sweet scented perfume- but sweet scented as in floral and grown-up, rather than in a bubble-gum sort of way. The two scents I picked out most were vanilla and (I think) lily of the valley- not an obvious combination, but one that is warm, striking and surprisingly nice. I would say there is a hint of musk too. I tried the tester whilst on my lunch hour and by the end of the day I liked the smell so much I went back and bought a bottle on the way home.
This perfume is pretty strong, so you don't need much of it- and if you spray it on in the morning, you'll still be able to smell it at the end of the day. This does make it good value for money (especially if you can get it on sale- I got mine in the January sales for £12.50 for 30ml), but it can be a bit overpowering when you first spray it on! I think this is a great scent to wear for work or an evening out- it's subtle (although not when you first spray it on- give it time to settle), sophisticated and long lasting. The only real downside is the awful packaging, which really does nothing to reflect the fragance. Come on Madonna- you can do better than this!
I know there will be many that disagree but I really loathe Madonna and think she should gracefully and quietly retire from the limelight, so trying a fragrance by her is not something I would ever have imagined myself doing, however, I recently received a little tester bottle of this fragrance so I didn't want to waste it, given it was free! Truth or Dare is a fragrance launched in 2012 and apparently it was a fragrance that was inspired by Madonna's mother, whose scent she always recalled. I won't even attempt to understand Madonna's explanation of Truth or Dare, as the name of her fragrance, but is supposedly represents the 'dual forces that coexist in all of us'. Really it is simply a fragrance, and having this rubbish explanation does nothing to entice me.
This fragrance is meant to be a reinvention of a classic, being both contempory and sexy which should create a 'timeless' scent of a mixture of florals, wood and vanilla. In fact, this fragrance contains top notes of gardenia, tuberose and neroli. Heart notes are white lily petals, benzoin tears, carnal jasmine and base notes of vanilla, amber and musk aura. A 30ml bottle of this fragrance is around £25, so it not the cheapest nor the most expensive of fragrances on the market.
I really really wanted to hate this fragrance, and in fact I put it on one morning on a day I wasn't going anywhere in case it really was awful, but I really couldn't believe how much I liked it from the very first time I applied it. It was right up my alley, as I love vanilla and this is definitely a very feminine floral fragrance, that is unlikely to suit everyone, as I find it quite strong initially, but it is certainly my kind of fragrance. I would describe it as a day fragrance, particularly for the spring/summer.
Apart from the lovely floral scent, what really impressed me was the durability of this fragrance. Even after applying it in the morning, there is still a faint scent of it in the evening, and since so many fragrances I try have little staying power, this stands out.
As much as I hate to admit it, I really really like this fragrance, and would certainly consider purchasing a full bottle for myself. This is a scent that is just right up my street and I love that it has staying power as well, making it a really good purchase in my eyes. I just wish it was made by someone other than Madonna, but I can overlook this since it is so good!
I must admit that I am not really a perfume person, so it goes without saying that I am not a regular buyer of celebrity perfumes. However, I was quiet happy to recieve a bottle of Madonna's Truth or Dare fragrance as a gift, as I am a bit of a fan.
The bottle comes inside a cardboard slip which is black at the sides. The front and back are identical and show two black and white photos of madonna. At the bottom of the slip In gold capital letters it says "Truth or Dare By Madonna."
When the slip is removed a gold box is revealed. In the centre of the box is a Madonna symbol which is a M with a cross above it in white. We are also given the name of the perfume again this time in white. The ingredients can be found on the reverse.
The bottle itself is white with grooves around the edges. On the front we have the Madonna symbol Again this time in the center in gold. The lid is gold and reminds me of a crown.
The first time I sprayed the perfume, I was not too sure. I found it quiet strong and overpowering. However, it was after the smell settled that I was able to appreciate it. A small spritz is all that is needed and it has a wonderful sillage and longevity. It smells very floral with a hint of vanilla and therefore it is extremely feminine.
Top Notes: Rich Gardenia, Creamy Tuberose, DewyNeroli
Heart Notes: Carnal Jasmine, Benzoin Tears, White LilyPetals
Base Notes: Vanilla Absolute, Caramelized Amber, SensualMusk Aura
I think this perfume is aimed at women 30+ and it is not something I could really imagine anyone younger than that wearing. It is Modern, classy, elegant yet quiet daring too. This is a really nice fragrance and althought I was initially a little unsure it has certainly grown on me. I wouldn't say this was an everyday perfume, infact I have had mine for a few months now and still have just over half left but I do tend to only use it on special occasions. Once opened it should be used within 36 months, so i'm in no rush to finish it. Will I buy another bottle when this one runs out? Probably not. But her new fragrance will be at the top of my Christmas list this year.

"My oldest memory of my mother is her perfume. I carry it with me everywhere," Madonna writes. "She always smelled like gardenias and tuberose. An intoxicating mixture - feminine and mysterious."
TRUTH OR DARE is a rather one dimensional white floral blend of gardenia and tuberose. These two scent notes are so strong that, apart from a whisper of neroli, nothing else is distinguishable from the jumble the perfume quickly becomes. Well nothing apart from the musk, which I don't really like, as I usually find musky perfumes cloying.
Bold white floral perfumes aren't my favourites as they always remain fresh and tart on my skin, but at first I did appreciate the blend of realistic floral notes. At least I did until the jumble of scent notes develops fully on my skin - then TRUTH OR DARE becomes a real no-no. There is something in the jumble that begins to smell overly synthetic and sickly - the sweet notes colliding with the fresher florals maybe? It all ends up being a bit like burnt plastic. I can't describe this synthetic sweet note in any more detail, but it's horribly heavy on me. I like sweet perfumes, but combining the bezoin, caramel, amber and vanilla together? It is too much and it actually makes the perfume LESS sweet, as the notes just blend into one big mess.
The blend does become a bit more tolerable after a few hours, as the synthetic sweet mess in the heart dies down and leaves nothing, except a creamy vanilla. Unfortunately I can't breathe easy for too long, as the musk develops as soon as the jumble from the heart settles down. The gardenia and tuberose notes remain, although the tuberose dies down faster then the gardenia.
Official scent notes: Gardenia, tuberose, neroli, jasmine, benzoin, white lily, vanilla absolute, caramelized amber and sensual musk.
To sum up my experiences with this perfume; I've recently sorted through all of the travel atomizers and vials of various perfumes I have dotted around the house, and my atomizer of TRUTH OR DARE was one of the perfumes to be poured down the sink. I find the strength of the floral notes to be migraine inducing, so even looking at my sample ended up turning my stomach.
If you can wear strong white florals then this is worth testing, as it is inexpensive and long wearing. Coty's celebrity ranges tend to use cheap ingredients and be watery, but TRUTH OR DARE stands up against many EDPs in terms of longevity and silage. You just need to be wary of the sweet notes, hidden underneath the florals.
TRUTH OR DARE does NOT remind me of Robert Piguet Fracas, which is the perfume that Madonna was trying to emulate. I only traded for a sample of TRUTH OR DARE because I had hoped for a cheaper version of Fracas [the only white floral that I'm fond off] based on other peoples opinions, so I was left very disappointed that it turned out not to be the case. I think that the Madonna/Coty version actually smells like Kim Kardashian's debut fragrance. And that is in no way a compliment, as I really dislike Kim Kardashian's release.
The name and bottle design doesn't suit the juice inside at all. The bottle, which "plays up the Truth or Dare duality--a classic and sophisticated shape, with modern and edgy detailing" reminds me of a coffin. The name suggests that the juice will be a bit 'out there' and unique, but it is reminiscent of the louder bestselling perfumes from the eighties. I think the name Truth Or Dare comes from the American title of the documentary 'In Bed With Madonna'. Apparently the perfume is the first product in a planned global lifestyle brand. The brand Truth Or Dare will also feature footwear, handbags, intimates and accessories.
I wouldn't recommend TRUTH OR DARE and wouldn't know when to wear it; I remember that my sister honestly backed away from me when I applied it in front of her, saying the fragrance was too heavy and would give her a migraine if she came too close to me. So I'd definitely say that TRUTH OR DARE is too invasive for casual or work wear. I also think that it smells like many, many other white floral blends, so it isn't unique enough for me to suggest it for evening wear or or any other special occasions.
There's nothing in TRUTH OR DARE to point to either warm or cold weather wear, so, in theory, this makes for a versatile perfume. As I had migraines after wearing it, I would say that this wouldn't be a good choice to wear on very hot days. But apart from that, if you have the chemistry and confidence to wear it whilst out and about, then go for it.
