... this is an M&S spicy oriental EDT.

      The fragrance

I recently purchased my first Marks & Spencer EDT and was really impressed, so went back to see what else was available. I'd never thought of them as being a fragrance retailer, but they'd surprised me before and now they've done it again.

SPARKLE does indeed seem to sparkle upon first application; The orange and pear are fresh and life-like and give the fragrance an energy. I'm not familiar with davana (i think it's a herb), but I detect a slight hint of a unfamiliar tartness underneath everything, which prevents the fruits from being syrupy sweet.

The top notes wear of quickly, allowing the ginger to heat up the remainder of the fragrance. This was the point I stopped wandering around the shop and immediately headed for the check out; It is so warm, spicy and vaguely festive, perfect for autumn/winter. Any rose notes are lost under the ginger, but I can separate the jasmine which perfectly compliments the ginger.

The ginger is strong enough to last throughout the base and - while I usually don't like don't like it - blends with the patchouli, revamping the hot and spicy feel. The slight hint of musk and vanilla soon smother the patchouli, which softens the spiciness towards the final drydown and allows the vanilla to fully develop and add a powdered sweetness to the fragrance.

The 25ml comes is a clear tube. This is perfect for tossing in your bag or carrying in a pocket for freshening up.

The 100ml comes in a clear glass bottle. The bottle is covered in a black sock [obviously not a real sock ;p - one of those mobile sock things].

      Other buying considerations

The lasting power is around three hours, which I think is pretty good for an EDT. Some EDPs burn out faster.

This is obviously a fragrance for colder weather. The fruit is too sweet for warmer weather and the ginger has a definite warming effect, which would be too cloying in the heat. Plus there is something festive about the fruit and spice.

I find this to be happy and it actually enhances my mood, so I'm finding that I reach for this morning and night. I also feel comfortable wearing this to work, but some people may think it's too relaxed and informal. It's doesn't seem to be offensive to others, so if you like it then go for it.

      Verdict

I know that the M&S fragrances are meant to be copies of expensive fragrances, however the warmth and spices remind me strongly of Hilary Duff 'With Love' [I know; My tastes are so sophisticated], and it is also reminiscent of Benefit's 'Maybe Baby', so if you like either of those I strongly recommend that you try SPARKLE.

I'm really in love with this. I usually get bored with fragrances really quickly and I rarely wear the same fragrance two days in a row, but I'm fast becoming obsessed with this one. I'm going to buy a backup bottle, as I suspect that this might be a festive item only, I've not found anything on the M&S site to support this, but the name and black and silver outer packaging scream "Party season release", so if you like it buy it now.
