I don't know how I have managed to neglect my favourite perfume (Black XS for her by Paco Rabanne) over the years that I have been on Dooyoo... I thought I'd better right that wrong straight away!!
About the fragrance
The fragrance is described as being both mysterious and rebellious. It claims to be a 'rock and roll' fragrance for a princess and the aroma claims to be sensual.
The top notes of the perfume are the fruity aromas of pink pepper berries and cranberries. At the heart of the fragrance are the aromas of black violet and the cocoa flower while in the bottom notes, you can enjoy the warm scent of patchouli and black vanilla.
I think the packaging of this product is beautiful and eye catching. The bottle is made from a deep purple/pink glass which you can partially see through and the image of a rose is made from raised glass. The lid is black and moulded into sections which makes it looks shiny.
This perfume will cost you around £30 for 30 ml. You can also buy larger bottles although these obviously cost more. The fragrance can be bought from perfume shops, department stores and also from a range of online websites.
The dispenser on the perfume is easy to push and the bottle is easy to hold. Quite a lot of the perfume comes out when you push the dispenser all the way down and you only need about two squirts in order to get the desired results. The spray doesn't come out as misty as others so you do need to hold it at arms length so it is spread more evenly and less watery but this is easily done.
You can see the perfume straight away and I am madly in love with the aroma. You can smell the creamy vanilla and the sharpness of the fruit. It doesn't smell of one thing in particular and none of the aroma stand out above the others but it is completely gorgeous. It is very evident but manages to do so without becoming sickly or overpowering. The aroma is perfect for a night out but it also works well in the day and it has a lovely warmth to it.
I get so many compliments when I wear this perfume and many people have asked what it is. The perfume is very long lasting and it will still be on you when you get in from a night out. It also lingers on your coats and scarves for days after you have applied it so sometimes you don't need to reapply! It is gentle on my skin and hasn't caused me any irritations. I have worn this perfume for years and completely love it. The only one problem that you may have is that this one somehow smells different on different people. When friends have borrowed it, it somehow takes on a different aroma.
All in all, I can say enough good things about this fragrance. The aroma is deliciously gorgeous and it has fantastic staying power. It is evident without being overpowering and perfect for both day and night wear. The bottle is pretty and it isn't overpriced. If I could give this fragrance 10 stars, I would!
I am a huge aftershave fan with over 12 bottles on my drawers. This Paco Rabanne fragrance is by far my favourite though. I've not had many other Paco Rabanne Fragrances myself before so I can only compare it to other brands rather than different fragrances in this brand.
The aftershave has a very woody spice fragrance about it with a blend of citrus fruits. Its quite an addictive smell.
It has a very expensive smell about it, as in it smells like it costs much more than the £20.00 it does.
It is very much a day to day smell as it is not too over powering. I wear mine to work on a daily basis.
You can pick up this aftershave from most fragrance outlets. Boots always have it in stock, although I seem to always get it a bit cheaper from Ebay.
Overall this is my favourite aftershave at the moment.
This is my favorite scent of my boyfriend. It is so masculine and it has an amazing smell. Woody, citrusy, fruity and sweet at the same time. When he wears it, the first smell you get is kind of fruity but later it turns to a more masculine smell. The only thing I don't like about this fragrance is the poor longevity. I would love call this my favorite man scent if it would last a bit longer.. ..
I bought this for my boyfriend earlier this year and I think its absolutely gorgeous smelling! I wanted to find eau de toilette that was unusual and smelled a bit different as I find a lot of mens fragrances just smell the same, and thats definitely what I got with this.
It comes in a black glass bottle that is quite slim, with the black xs logo on the front in silver, and a little dangly embellishment of a silver skull. It has a black cap on top that flips off to reveal the usual pump action nossle on the top that most perfumes and mens fragrances have.
The scent as I said earlier is quite unusual for a mens fragrance. It is quite fruity at first, and smells quite citrussy and lemony, followed by a rather woody/musky scent which I absolutely love. The description of this fragrance describes it as having three layers to the scent:
Top Note: Lemon and Lavender - I have to say I cant smell the lavender, as I hate the smell of lavender but the lemony aroma definitely comes through.
Heart Note: Ozonic accord and Cypriol - I have no idea what these are but they must smell nice!
Base Note: Amber Wood and Patchouli - this I can definitely detect in the scent which is where the woody and musky side of it that I can smell is coming from.
The scent is quite strong so you dont need to spray much (otherwise it can be a bit too strong and overpowering) and it lasts longer than most womens perfumes I have used. My boyfriend can put it on in a morning before he goes to work and I can still smell it on him when he comes home at the end of the day which is great as it really lasts a long time as you dont need to use much in each application.
You can buy this perfume from places like Boots, House of Fraser and most good perfume shops and normally retails for around £40, I think I paid £37 when I bought it but it all depends where you buy it from.
Overall I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a scent for men that smells a bit different from all the rest. I definitely love it!
** NB. This is a review of a gift set I bought that contained both the eau and a shower gel and instead of separating the reviews I just combined them into one**
~~~~~~~~~~ History ~~~~~~~~~~
Black xs is a men's fragrance that was created by Oliver Cresp in 2005 for the Paco Rabbane fashion brand. Black xs was created to appeal to a younger man than the company's original xs which was released way back in 1993.
To help it appeal to a younger generation than the original it was decided to be really bold with both the scent and the bottle and to this end the black xs comes in a black bottle with gothic style writing on it and is a totally different smell to the original being more punchy and distinctive.
~~~~~~~~~~ Black xs gift set ~~~~~~~~~~
I picked up a Black xs gift set on ebay for a fraction of its rrp. The gift set contained a 50 ml eau de toilette and a 100ml shower gel and comes packaged in a glossy black box. The aftershave and the shower gel look great together and the black is really set off against the white interior of the box. It looks expensive and classy and would make a great gift for someone.
~~~~~~~~~~ The eau de toilette ~~~~~~~~~~
The eau de toilette comes in a spray bottle which is reached by way of a flip lid which I find much better than the usual pull off lid that I normally end up losing. I absolutely love the design of the bottle and the bold white gothic style writing that adorns the front of the bottle.
Black xs contains top notes of lemon, sage and tagetes, middle notes of cinnamon and praline and base notes of ebony wood and black amber. These notes all combine to create a fragrance that is completely distinctive and unmistakably masculine.
The fragrance is really heady and it is a real love it or hate it kind of scent. There is absolutely nothing middle of the road about this particular aftershave and within a couple of seconds of spraying it you will know if it is for you or not. For this reason I really wouldn't recommend that you purchase Black xs blind and instead I would get a tester to try before you shell out money for something that you either will or won't love.
I wore Black xs years ago but I had forgot just how unusual it actually was and the first time I tried it again with this gift set it was immediately love at first sniff and I can't remember the original reason I stopped wearing it now.
As soon as you first spray Black xs you are immediately hit with a strong mix of both sweetness and spice with the fruity notes being the more dominant. It is a very sweet fragrance and one that some people might find a bit cloying to begin with. Personally I really love the sweet powerful opening. It does dry down to a less intense sweet smell but it remains at all times something different to the usual clean fresh scents that seem to be dominating men's fragrances.
Something that I appreciate in this aftershave is just how powerful it is. There is almost nothing else in the world that irritates me more than shelling out £40 - £50 on an aftershave that I love only for the smell to disappear within a couple of hours. There is no such fear with this aftershave as both projection and longevity are excellent. It stays on my skin for hours and I can spray it on in the morning and still smell it strongly on myself by evening.
As for who would wear this aftershave that is a tricky one. I do think it is a young scent and more suited to people in their 20's or early 30's as opposed to an older gentleman as I think the smell really does project a youthful feel however I do also think that even though the sweetness makes it young smelling there is a spiciness that gives it a more sophisticated edge.
I also don't really think this is an office kind of fragrance due to it being so strong and also so distinctive. It really doesn't blend into the background and for me personally is much more suited to night time and going out rather than being waster as a day time fragrance. I would also really recommend that if you are going to wear it to work or where you might be in a close confinement with someone that you limit the amount that you wear as two sprays is more than enough to scent you for the entire day and you don't want to spray too much and end up offending someone else's nose who maybe doesn't like the smell as much as you.
~~~~~~~~~~ The shower gel ~~~~~~~~~~
I usually find that shower gels that come as part of a set can be a bit hit or miss when it comes to quality. The designers of these aftershave expect you to fork out extra to buy the accompanying products but sometimes they can be low quality especially considering that the money involved in buying them isn't exactly the same as popping to boots and buying a £2 shower gel. Luckily the shower gel in this gift set matches the quality of the aftershave.
It has exactly the same smell as the aftershave and is a really unusual sweet and spicy mix with a strawberry smell to it. When I say strawberry it sounds as though this is going to be feminine but again like the aftershave this couldn't be further from the truth as to my nose this is one of the most masculine scents out there.
You only need a little bit of the shower gel to get a really good lather and it isn't overly drying on my skin. The scent is really strong when washing with it and when my skin is dried it does smell strongly of the fragrance. The smell from the shower gel isn't as strong as from the eau de toilette obviously but nevertheless it is strong enough that I can smell coming from me for hours afterwards and it makes a good way of wearing the fragrance during the day if you want to be more subtle about it.
~~~~~~~~~~ Price and availability ~~~~~~~~~~
I picked up this gift set on ebay for only £14.99 which I thought was an absolute bargain. The usual retail price is around about £36.00 which is about on par with designer fragrances. However unlike a lot of them this is actually good quality and if you like the fragrance then it's a good buy as it should last longer than normal aftershaves due to it being so strong that you only need a small amount of it at a time.
~~~~~~~~~~ Recommendation ~~~~~~~~~~
I would heartily recommend this gift set but I really would recommend that you try before you buy as it really is a fragrance that divides people. I happen to fall in to the side that loves it but I know plenty other people who hate it. At least it isn't bland and no one could accuse Paco Rabbane of producing some generic safe fragrance. And although there are loads of people who don't like this it is also one of the aftershaves that I have had the most compliments when wearing and had complete strangers coming up to me to ask what it is that I am wearing.
With Christmas coming up soon fragrance gift boxes will be everywhere once again and they do make a good deal as you usually get a shower gel or deodorant for free when usually they will cost you in the region of about £16 on their own.
I have nearly went through both my aftershave and my shower gel and plan on buying another one again as after having rediscovered Black xs I plan on wearing it more often especially now that autumn is here and winter is approaching as I find that the sweet spiciness of the fragrance is really warming and rich. As mentioned the longevity and projection of this is excellent which is something I personally appreciate as I don't buy aftershave for other people I buy it for myself because I like the scent and I want to be able to smell it on myself after half an hour and with this I can enjoy the fragrance for the whole day.
I really recommend Black xs and think it is an amazing fragrance and one that is so distinctive and unlike some other aftershaves I can mention Paco Rabbane haven't just went for a light middle of the road fragrance and have took a risk with a dark and sweet aftershave that is heady and intoxicating and it has really paid off.
I received a 50 ml bottle of Paco Rabanne XS Black Eau de Toilette for my birthday back in April from my parents, and so I have decided to review it.
~~~ The Packaging ~~~
Paco Rabanne XS Black comes in a very similar bottle to the original XS bottle, but the main difference is the 'black' theme, which makes it stand out from the original. It is the usual fairly standard looking bottle, made from a black opaque style glass that is rounded at the edges, and has a few vertical ridges along the front and back of the bottle. It is quite a tall bottle, but slim at the same time, giving it a sleek and modern look about it.
As the glass is opaque, it is not easy to see the contents within the bottle (unlike the original XS), and so it takes a bit of guesswork to know when the bottle is running out, and this always makes me feel nervous that the bottle may not have been filled up to the correct level when I first buy it, as it is impossible to tell!. Splashed over the front of the dark black bottle is a bright white rose, along with bright white lettering stating 'Black XS' and lower down 'Paco Rabanne' which really stands out against the black background.
The lid is also coloured in black, and again it is a flip style lid, which works very well, as you do not have to worry about putting the lid down and losing it because it is constantly attached to the bottle. Once the lid has been flipped open, a nice black spray mechanism is revealed, and this is used to release the fragrance.
~~~ The Scent ~~~
The fragrance itself is a strong and dark and sensual fresh smell, which is quite woody, making the fragrance feel somewhat masculine. It has top notes of Calabrian lemon, kalamanzi, tagete and sage, out of which the citrus lemon smell really stands out to me. The heart notes consist of cinnamon, tolu balm, black cardamom and praline. The base notes are a combination of palissandre wood, black amber, patchouli and ebony wood, with the wood blending in just nicely to give a dark and mysterious kind of scent, which is fresh at the same time.
The result is very good indeed, and I actually do prefer the black XS to the original XS, as it feels somehow heavier, and darker, giving it a more serious feel to it.
Black XS is pretty much suitable for young or older males, meaning it is a very versatile fragrance which is probably ideal for any occasion during both the daytime and the night-time, however personally I view this fragrance as one which is slightly more suited to night-time. I would say that this is quite a strong smelling fragrance, and as such only a couple of squirts on the spray mechanism are required.
A big upside of the black XS when compared to the original XS is that there is a noticeable difference to the staying power of the fragrance. It is still not up there with the kind of fragrances that can easily be traced on your clothes the next day, but it lasts a good few hours longer than the original XS, meaning it can be applied in the morning, and still be quite noticeable by lunchtime or even mid afternoon.
~~~ Price and Availability ~~~
Paco Rabanne Black XS is available in both aftershave form and Eau de Toilette spray, and it comes in either 30 ml, 50ml or 100 ml sized bottles. The price is pretty reasonable with a 30 ml bottle of aftershave generally costing around £12 - £15, with the 100 ml EDT bottle offering even better value at approximately £35, which will last a long time for the small amount that is required each time.
In summary this Black edition of Paco Rabanne's XS is an improvement to the original in terms of both fragrance scent and staying power. I will always look for this as my first choice between the two of them in the future, and I am glad I gave it a try.
Thanks for reading.
The first time I tried black xs was a small sample from house of Frasier, from the moment I put it on I fell in love with the fragrance and just couldn't get enough of it. It is a very strong and dominate smell, ideal for the alpha male. I decided to get some more of the fragrance and started to where it regularly, it is such a intense fragrance it is a good idea to not wear it every day but only when a occasion worthy of it arrases' think it is bets to buy the 100ml rather then the 50ml as you will defiantly use that much and it works out better value for money. this is by far one of the best fragrances i have ever had and simply can't put it down. However having been singing its praises, I have had negative comments from friends about it, complaints that it has too much of a strong smell. I think with black xs it can only be evaluated by the user as everyone has different tastes and opinions, so I suggest you get a sample give it a go and see where you go from there. Your either love it or hate it!
I have to say I really love this fragrance and it is certainly up there as one of my favourites not only because of the way it smells but the fact it makes you feel manly too. Let me explain.
You will this product in black with white writing on the front with the brand name. Paco Robanne have always advertised themselves as a very sexy image that gives you a feeling that their after shaves give you added appeal and so woman will be attracted to you. They also put themselves out there at the higher end of the market of dipicting highly successful people in their campaigns. The fragrance itself does not let you down on these respects and you know you are buying absolute quality.
The smell itself is very strong and you will not need to apply much in order to get the desired effect. It is a like wooden almost forestry kind of smell. It reminds me of the smell of freshly cut grass but sweeter. Its like an early morning summers day when everything is quiet and still and it certainly gives you confidence. Unless you are spraying huge amounts of the stuff on you there is not going to be a person who will not like this smell.
You should be looking to pay anything from 25-£30 for a bottle of 100 mls and because it is such a popular brand you will not have trouble finding it in all the major retail stores. Also You will not need in my opinion to buy any bottles larger than this simply because of the strong smell I find it lasts me a really long time. A couple of simple squirts and even after a long night out clubbing their is little chance the smell will disappear. It is sure to linger on your skin and you are bound to get lots of compliments.
Overall this is one of the best fragrances on the market and if you have some spare cash left over after Christmas or you need to spend some vouchers then you can do a lot worse than buying this after shave to treat yourself.
Paco rabanne xs black is great on me. Its dark sexy manly and works for me. I like it a lot and wear it for evenings when I go out . I can wear it summer or winter and its still good.
I like the normal xs too but the paco rabanne xs black has a deeper aroma that is stronger and warmer on me. I think this is a very confident smell that a man can wear to stand out in.
When I get my paco rabanne xs black I can pick it up cheap in many shops and I can pay as little as £22 for a smaller bottle, or pay about £28 for a bigger one. I think this is dark and sexy and could wear well on young and older men.
The large 100ml bottles last a very long time for me as I don't wear this every day and I can make do with a smaller bottle if I see it cheap, best value is the bigger bottles and I look out for them when I can afford to.
This is a great sexy powerful aroma on me that works for hours and stays true with a bit of fading in time. I can put a small splash of this on and it instantly makes me feel boosted in confidence. It gets mellower as I wear it for a few hours but still smells as good.
I get a lot of very good comments about the citrusy woody and sensual aroma I get from paco rabbane xs black. I like the strong patchouli influence that goes great with the citrus and sage. I enjoy wearing this a lot. Its a good one.
I think the bottle is great too, it looks similar to the normal xs bottle but its dark black glass with the text in white to make it stand out. I also wear the xs normal aroma and I think they are different enough to have them both in my collection.
I would recommend this for your man if you want to give him a sexy aroma that you will both enjoy. Its great, the aroma is very strong and smooth and lasts for hours.
Maybe my nose is too sensitive, but I have just sprayed some of this fragrance this morning and it has made me go all twitchy. The fragrance can be bought in the men's version or the ladies, guys need to look out for the Black XS bottle. You can gernerally pick up the 50 ml bottle for about twenty five pounds, putting it in line with the likes of Hugo Boss price wise for a leading branded fragrance.
Rabbane's effotless glass bottle looks very sexy and mysterious and this is what made me want to try it initially. The minimal look would suit the wardrobe of most blokes and not out of place on a desk or dresser. You dispense the fragrance by using the pump action spray the top of the bottle and this ejects with a flourish.
When you sniff it at bottle stage it is very stinky and might well make you wince. My thoughts were 'goodness this is so strong.' The scent is not what I would call soothing, but definitely intense and commanding. My nose always twitches with fragrances and in this one, the lemon made me wheeze. There is a strong citrus zest which pushes through with conviction, maybe too much conviction. Once the fragrance has had the chance to settle on the skin, some warmer spices start to diffuse and the more acceptable woody tones start to arrive. These are the notes that I prefer as they are easier on the nose. The palissandre wood, black amber and cinnamon were more in keeping what I wanted from this smell and gave it some much needed depth and intrigue.
The scent improves once it has the opportunity to settle into the skin. Due to the powerful nature, one squirt for me was ample. This is a fragrance to wear for posh dinners, nights out on the town or important office meetings. Too strong for wearing round the house, save it for those truly special moments. You can buy it online and from all leading department stores.
Paco Rabanne Black XS Mens....
This is the EDT that I always by Himself for every Birthday or Christmas depending on how much he has got left. It is a fragrance that both Himself and I have et to tire of and considering he has been buying it ever since it was released a good few years back this is going well.
I always find that Paco Rabanne fragrances always last really well on the skin and this is no different the smell seems to Linger on Himself very well throughout the day and this is another reason why we have continued to buy it.
For 100 mls of this Eau De Toilette you will be looking at paying around £30 if buying it from Boots or the like. It can be found cheaper online so it is well worth looking around for a cheaper deal. There is a smaller sized bottle or the larger size which always works out slightly better value for money,
The packaging of the EDT is very sleek and cool looking. It has a simple black and white design with a kind of rock type feel to it. The bottle is black with the XS logo slashes across the front in white. The only trouble with a black bottle is that it is hard to tell when it is coming to an end!
The EDT is a squirt bottle and a few squirts is really all you need to get a good coverage and a lasting smell. This is one reason why a bottle does indeed last a good time because a little of the spray goes a long way.
The aroma of this fragrance is very distinctive and I can always pick out men when shopping who also use this EDT. It has a strong and woody type whiff which smells really appealing and definitely has the "Lynx Effect" for me. It has hints of Lemon and Cinnamon but ebony wood and black amber are the deeper fragrances which hold time the longest.
I really do like this fragrance and this is why I will buy it again for Himself. Good job he likes it too!
I think a score of 5 out of 5 stars is in order as it is a fragrance that can be worn any time, anywhere, a little goes a long way. Highly Recommended.
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
I do hope that this has been of some help to you.
When I first opened this I have to say I loved the bottle, and the fact that the lid seems to pop open at right angles, this is unique.
Onto the smell, when you spray black xs the first sensation is the fruittiness of the overal bouquet, it s light but as the same rich, without being overpowering.
The first comments upon wearing it from a female colleague were "wow, you smell good"! Now like with all good scents it may not be obvious to all concerned, around you that it physically is you that smells that good, such is the subtle "drip-drip" wicker effect that black xs releases layer-upon-layer of its multi faceted and complex scent!
I personally like an Eau de toilette to last a long time (ie 4 sprays will last all day) sadly this does not, and to be honset is the only thing that has caused it to lose one star. For sheer, unique smell, clas, body, fresh energy, and (all importantly) attractiveness this is right up there.
If you shop around in the U.K, you can usually find it somewhere cheaper.
If you fancy wearing a colegne that is completely unlike anything else out there on the market, then I would reccomend "Black-XS".
Paco Rabanne: Black XS, Eau de Toilette
Brand: Paco Rabanne
Gender : Male
Black XS is from the brand Paco Rabanne. I got to know this product, because I got this one as a gift and felt in love with it! It's one of my favourites and I bought this one again the other day. It's a really manly scent, but also a fresh one that stays with you throughout the day.
The brand Paco Rabanne
Well the brand name didn't really sound familiar, but apparently it belongs to a great fashion designer. He's in the same league as Dolce & Gabbana, only not as famous. He's from Spain and since 1966 got his own brand with products like clothes and accessories.
The Black XS
Black XS comes in a really nice strong looking black bottle, but its name and a rose are in white. The bottle really stands out and I really like the design. It's also very easy to use with the spray being on top and it feels like you get the right amount when you spray yourself. In the morning I spray myself twice and that feels enough for the day. The scent is really nice and fresh, with a little bit sweet aftertaste. The ingredients are lemon and Kalamanzi (a citrus fruit) that are responsible for the freshness and also sage, which gives it more a more sweet feeling to it.
I would really recommend this fragrance and it's definitely one of my favourites. I think it's perfect for a normal casual day but also to go to a dinner. It has a nice fresh scent, but at the same time it's sweet and soft. It really gives me the feeling I smell nice and stays with me during the day.
There is only two frangrances I buy. This happens to be one of them. I love the smell of this product, ever since I was given a bottle as a present once I fell in love with it and use it all the time now, regardless to say I get quite a few bottles of the stuff over the year as presents so i'm not complaining, the more the merrier!
If you unsure about it, and I know these products can be quite tricky as whether you like it is very subjective to each individual person, but there is a site on the internet that is giving mini samples out that can be delivered to your address - I obviously signed up and receievd a very cute little bottle - and when I say little I mean LITTLE it is only about 2 ml worth in there but that is enough to make up your mind whether you like the product or not.
The only downside I can possibly think of is the bottle it comes in - it looks quite old fashioned and dated which is why I guess it gets shunted for similar newer products on the market.
I had not heard much about Paco Rabanne, until I heard of Black XS, initially i heard about it from a friend, who said he had been given it and was not really a fan, saying that it smelt too sickly for him. I tried some of his and thought whilst it was a sweet smelling fragrance it was not sickly, but used in moderation is really good.
As with most perfume the packaging is probably what you spend most of your money on, and in this case it looks pretty stylish, with a sleek black cover. Recently I was given a gift set with it so it came with some shower gel which is pretty good as well.
I think that Black XS is an "every day" fragrance, that is to say for going out of an evening or on a date or whatever. However, I think that if it was a more formal occasion a sharper fragrance might be what i would choose. However that is for each person to decide.
Black XS in short is a good fragrance, being quite subtle compared to some other brands out there, and not too expensive either. However, it is not the most striking smell out there, so if you want to stand out it may be better to choose a different fragrance.
Paco Rabanne Black XS is a sensual, woody fragrance for men with top notes of Calabrian lemon, kalamanzi, tagete and sage; middle notes of cinnamon, tolu balm, black cardamom and praline, and base notes of palissandre wood, black amber, patchouli and ebon
