I must admit, whilst my Boots Beauty Advent calendar was amazing, it was somewhat padded out with fragrance samples. The Pack Rabanne Black XS Eau de Parfum was one of the many ones included. Described as an excessively sensual oriental floral I was intrigued to try it although I have not had a Paco Rabanne perfume in my collection for a good many years. What's in it? Fruity sweet notes complement the XS for men fragrance. Tope notes of cranberry, tamarind, and pink pepper. Middle notes of rose, cocoa and black violet and base notes of vanilla. Packaging The bottle is quite masculine in my opinion, with a deep purple tint and a skull charm. An embossed rose in the glass finishes off the look. First impressions I do like to try a new fragrance out without knowing its key ingredients, and that's what I did with this perfume. I got the deep oriental hit and also thought it smelt quite masculine. It was very long lasting and strong smelling and a fragrance that is ideal for winter, especially with the Christmas cranberry ingredient! Price A 30ml spray is available from Fragrance Direct for £23.95. I think this is a reasonable price for a good quality perfume. Final word I liked this fragrance but I didn't love it. I was happy to wear it from the sample four times over Christmas but it wasn't one I yearned to own in my collection of full sized perfumes. I wasn't sure I was going to love an oriental styled fragrance but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I can see this being popular with both the young and middle aged population, it definitely grows on you so I can imagine teenagers 'borrowing' a squirt of this off their mums! If I received this as a gift I wouldn't be disappointed as it is really nice but just not one I'd buy for myself right now.
~Black XS L'Excès~ Launched : 2012 'An excessively sensual oriental floral' This eau de parfum is part of the Paco Rabanne fragrance range. A male version is also available. *Top notes (the initial scent) - neroli and black pepper *Heart notes (the main body of the scent) - Queen of the Night jasmine and rose absolute *Base notes (the final scent) - black vanilla and cashmere wood ~Design~ I love the bottle holding this perfume. The bottle is curvy and made from thick, faceted glass. The lid is black and the colour gradually changes through deep purple tones. The design is finished off with a neck charm of a skull and a rose. Just gorgeous. ~Where To Buy~ Black XS L'Excès is readily available in 30ml and 50ml sized bottles. 80ml bottles are available too. *The Perfume Shop - £31.50/£41.50 *Amazon - £30.56/£39.39 *www.fragrancedirect.co.uk - £26.99/£37.99/£32.99 (good deal on the 80ml bottle) ~My Thoughts~ I have been trying new perfumes recently to try and find a few new ones to buy over the next few months. One which I have been sampling over the past week or so is Black XS L'Excès and I must say that I have been absolutely addicted to this perfume so it will be treating myself to a bottle. L'Excès EDP is stunning from the moment it hits my skin. The open is simply divine and quite intense. The neroli is evident but the emphasis is on black pepper. It doesn't smell like any other peppery perfumes I have worn before - it is bold, warm and gorgeously sweet as opposed to a heavy spicy aroma. It is a rich and undeniably sexy scent which whilst quite strong, never becomes heady or overpowering. It sits at just the right level on my skin and leaves my smelling lovely. After an hour or so, the heart of L'Excès seeps through and mingles with the sweetness of the top notes. The scent is equally as gorgeous here and very alluring. Notes of sensual, sexy jasmine blend with the sweet and not too floral rose absolute. This blend with the sweet trace makes for a beautifully feminine yet confident and slightly 'dark' scent scent which I adore wearing. There is something dramatic about the scent and it lacks nothing at all in my opinion. A few hours after application, the dry down of L'Excès becomes evident and it is most definitely worth waiting for. At first, a powdery smell is evident but this soon settles to reveal a heavenly sweet and woody aroma. The black vanilla is incredibly rich and smooth. I love the smell of vanilla and it comes through absolutely perfectly here - authentic and not sickly sweet. It is laced with the cashmere wood which is blended well with the vanilla to form an addictive scent which is a treat for my skin, clothing and nose. It is strong enough to be noticeable by those around me and my fiance has often commented that he loves the way it smells on me. It starts to fade and become close to my skin around 6 hours after I first apply it but remains for quite some time on my clothing. ~Suitability~ I consider Black XS L'Excès to be a grown up scent would likely appeal to those over the age of 20 rather than teenagers in my opinion. It is a sweet scent so if you do not favour sweet scents then you may not like this. The warmth of this EDP makes it perfect for wearing in the evening and it is ideal to wear through the cold months. ~Conclusion~ I love this perfume and at times, it reminds me of Dior Hypnotic Poison and at others times, I think of Thierry Mugler Alien. It isn't identical but similar notes make the resemblence evident over the course of a few hours. I have been impressed by the way this smells on my skin and find it to be a confident and sexy yet comforting scent. I feel great when wearing it and it lasts well on my skin. It isn't overly expensive either and would make a lovely gift (hint hint). Highly recommended. Thanks for reading :)
Everyone who knows me, knows how much I love smellies and perfume and I have been known to get very excited upon receiving such gifts. With this knowledge, my husband very kindly got me a perfume gift for Christmas the contents of which turned out to be this Paco Rabanne Black XS. Before receiving this gift I was the owner of the Paco Rabanne Lady Million which I love, so I hoped that this new perfume would be just as good. ~The Perfume and Packaging~ The perfume comes packaged in a rectangular black box which has a fuchsia pink rose imprinted on the front and the words 'Black XS' typed in white text. The Paco Rabanne logo is clearly visible along with the words "pour elle" indicating that this is a woman's fragrance. Turning the box over we are told the ingredients within this perfume together with the fact that this scent is made in France. Overall, my first impressions of the packaging were good, and I guess the predominantly black box goes along with the 'Black XS' name and the urban almost graffiti feel of the bottle graphics, however I did think the box a little young and had I not known it was Paco Rabanne I might have said it looked like a teenage product. The box can be opened via a slotted lid at the top and once inside the box has a pink inset that matches the rose on the front and which provides a pop of colour against the black outer lining. Inside, the perfume bottle is glass in construction and maintains a dark pink colour, entirely suiting the colour scheme of the packaging in my opinion. The bottle is rounded at the sides and is almost heart shaped with a glass rose inscribed onto the front together with the Black XS text in white font. The bottle features a few little nice features such as the rose inscription and the bottle tapers into a neat little octagon at the top where the nozzle is located. The lid of the bottle is a bit of a let down in my opinion, being black in colour and entirely made of plastic. It is a flimsy feature and although it is meant to clip to the top of the bottle, mine does have an infuriating habit of falling off at every opportunity. The spray applicator is black in colour and plastic, however it is easy to press down and release the perfume without the tendency to dribble as other perfumes can. The fragrance of this perfume is what makes it special in my opinion. A quick look online reveals that this perfume has cranberry pink pepper berries and tamarind flower together with hellebore rose bloom and notes of amber. Whilst I am no perfume expert, I can definitely detect a floral yet musky smell which smells feminine and seductive in my opinion when the perfume is initially sprayed. The scent starts of quite strong but without being overbearingly so with hints of rose and amber being noticeably present, however by the end of the day I find that the fragrance has faded to being almost a hint of sweetness and musk, which, though noticeable, is less intense. It is a scent that I love, and one which I would consider typically feminine but not in an overly girly way. I find that the smell is soft enough to wear during the day and yet musky enough to wear on a night out and makes me feel very womanly whatever the occasion. ~Price and Availability~ This perfume is available in three sizes those being the 30ml, 50ml and the 80ml bottle. I own the 80ml bottle and this can be found from a number of perfume shops and online. On the Perfume Shop website the three sizes are priced at £27.50, £37.50 and £51.50 respectively, and I feel that this is about average for a perfume of this quality. ~Summary~ Overall I feel that this is a lovely perfume and one which brings out the woman in me. I like to think that the success of a perfume can be found in how it makes the wearer feel, and this one leaves me feeling slightly naughty, playful and feminine, all three traits being essential in my opinion. As a result of the above, I would recommend this perfume, all be it in the absence of the slightly cheap feeling plastic cap. Therefore this perfume scores a great four stars from me. I hope this review has been of some help and thanks for reading! x
An excessively sensual oriental floral / A fusion of energy the first notes of neroli and black pepper are electrifying; at the heart of the fragrance they pulse over a profusion of jasmine Queen of the Night and rose absolute / Mysterious and voluptuous the base casts an addictive spell with an intoxicating overdose of cashmere wood /
