Advantages: Fresh, masculine type scent
Disadvantages: Quite a strong scent
Since living with me for the last 6 years, Mr Lools went from being a man with only 2 fragrances in his aftershave collection to having a vast collection. I often surprise him with a new fragrance (usually when it is on offer or I want a favour in return) or purchase him a bottle as a Christmas present (when I'm stuck with what to buy him). So I was quite shocked on a recent shopping trip that when we were walking through Boots he would say he wanted to purchase a new fragrance. Paul Smith Man 2 was his chosen scent. Even more of a shock he was very keen for me to review on his behalf........
***Paul Smith Man 2***
The description of Paul Smith MAN 2 is "for the confident, sophisticated man. Bursting with zesty fruit and a cheeky fresh twist of granny smith apple in the top notes, the fragrance's warm heart elegantly warms the air before releasing the woody weight of sandal and cedar wood. All these ingredients combine into a unique cocktail of sensual aromas"
The top notes of the fragrance are grapefruit, mandarin, and apple. Middle notes of nutmeg, cardamom and cinnamon with a touch of lavender and cashmere wood. The base notes are cedar, sandalwood and white musk.
The bottle of Paul Smith MAN 2 is very masculine looking. The bottle is made from black glass and is a very sharp angled rectangular bottle with a silver circular lid. Paul Smith is written in block grey font vertically on the bottle with MAN two written in the same font just in a bright yellow colour which contrasts well with the dark bottle.
The fragrance comes in two sizes. This is a 50ml or 100ml bottle of Eau de Toilette. Prices vary for the fragrance between £23 -£32 for a 50ml bottle and £29-£42 for a 100ml bottle. Mr Lools paid £26.50 for a 50ml bottle from Boots. In comparison to other male fragrances this is definitely a slightly cheaper fragrance.
The fragrance is available from a number of retailers including Boots, Debenhams, John Lewis and also a number of online retailers including cheapscents.com and feelunique.com .
Mr Lools is quite a complicated one when it comes to fragrances he doesn't really follow any pattern with fragrances or have strong preferences. He doesn't like overly strong, musky or sweet fragrances apparently but then also owns and likes Le Male by Jean Paul Gautier which I feel is all of the those things!
The reason Mr Lools purchased Paul Smith MAN 2 was because of it's fresh scent however his purchasing rationale was to spray it, sniff it then because he liked the scent he walked over to the tills in Boots and purchased it; all within 5 minutes therefore he didn't get a chance to let it develop.
The following day after purchasing he decided to wear his new fragrance. When he first sprayed it on when getting ready he did spray 3 sprays onto himself as this is how much he uses with his usual scents (which are Armani, Gucci and CK). In both his own opinion and mine this was probably a bad idea as the scent was very strong initially. The scent when initially sprayed was very fresh and the fruity scents of apple and grapefruit were definitely apparent and very appealing albeit the overall scent was a little too overpowering.
Unlike many fragrances this is not a scent which fades shorty after being sprayed. The scent does die down slightly but this is definitely a strong and lasting fragrance. After an hour the scent was still just as strong on Mr Lools and the scent was probably less fresh and fruity and it had more of a musky scent. This was still a sweet musky scent rather than a spicy type musk scent, but the apple scent was still apparent.
By the evening of that same day the scent of Paul Smith MAN 2 was still very apparent on Mr Lools. Even when stood a distance away from him I could still quite strongly smell the fragrance. The fragrance at this point was a lighter fresher musky scent but still extremely strong for an aftershave he sprayed onto himself 8 hours previously.
Since the first wear of this Mr Lools now only sprays two very small sprays onto himself in order for the scent not to be overpowering. It is still a strong scent when worn this way but not as strong as fragrances like Le Male by Jean Paul Gautier.
This is a very masculine scent which is great for males that like a confident fresh fragrance. At £26.00 for a 50ml bottle it is also a more affordable fragrance compared to the higher priced aftershave. Combined with the fact a small spray goes a long way you will not need to use excessive amounts of this fragrance.
Although very similar in some respects to Le Male by Jean Paul Gautier because of a strong fresh confident scent, it is also a lot more fruity and sweet with less of a musky scent. A great male scent which gets 5 stars from Mr Lools because "it's really good" apparently!
Summary: A strong confident fresh scent by Paul Smith.
