Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet Eau de Toilette
Advantages: Great longevity wonderful blend of citrus and woody notes
Disadvantages: The price
Blenheim Bouquet by Penhaligon's is an eau de toilette that my husband has being wearing for several years and is a huge favourite of his. Penhaligon's if you haven't heard of it before are a British company that started in 1872 as barber shop and perfumery. It still makes all of its 34 scents here in the UK using traditional methods and its perfumes are still packaged in the same bottle design as they were in the founder William Penhaligon's day. The Blenheim Bouquet fragrance has been made since 1902 so has certainly stood up to the test of time over a century later.
The packaging is very simple really it is a clear glass bottle with a slight incline towards to the top. A ribbon is around the top of the bottle which my husband always pulls off as he thinks it makes it too feminine. The top is plastic with a clear ball on the top of it. The atomiser that comes with the bottles gives a nice clean and crisp squirt that is easy to spray in the direction you wish and always works without fail.
The scent and in use
Penhaligon's describe the scent as "a bracing mix of citrus oils, spices and wood" and I would concur that it really is a lovely blend. On first spray the head notes are immediately apparent the lemon and lime give a wonderful zing straight away and my husband loves the way the citrus notes wake him up in the morning or help to make his skin feel all clean and crisp if he is applying it after a shave. The lavender notes are not immediately apparent and often take between 3- 5mins to become noticeable over the lemon and lime. The lavender is really delicate and is not old lady lavender or pomander lavender at all but a light scent that is more reminiscent of lavender leaves in the garden than the bushes in full bloom. The citrus notes are very sharp and clean and are definitely a full on freshly squeezed juice smell rather than synthetic lemon like Jif Lemon cleaner. There are no middle notes to this scent but it really doesn't need them as the base notes are evident after about 10 minutes and include a wonderful pine and black pepper combination that just oozes pine forests after the rain to me. This blended with the citrus notes gives it a wonderful sensuous quality that I think is very masculine. The black pepper notes are really just a twist of a pepper mill and complement the sharpness of the citrus by softening the nose. I would say by about 30 minutes of wearing the citrus notes are starting to fade well and truly into the background leaving you with a woody mossy fragrance that has subtle hints of musk and spices that makes me think of woodland walks after the rain when all the notes of the sap of the wood are present and you have a bracing scent in your nose as you inhale.
The scent also has incredible longevity it literary needs only two squirts and it lasts all day and I can always still smell the pine and spices on my husband at the end of the day. I think the secret behind its lasting abilities must be the high quality ingredients used as few aftershaves and Eau de Toilette last this long in my experience.
This scent has had over the years many famous men wearing it including "Winston Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough and Oscar Wilde" so a fairly wide range of people. I personally think this scent is definitely masculine though I do know some people who prefer to view it as a unisex fragrance. It is however for me one I always associate with men due to the woody and musky dry down that is left after the initial citrus bursts. I think this fragrance is going to appeal more men in their late 20's and upwards as I think it is probably too woody and musky for younger men. It is a great scent for both the office and days out I think and it certainly one my husband keeps returning too
Price and availability
Available from either Penhaligon's shops or website direct it costs £58 for 50 mls or £80 for 100mls. However here in York there is a Penhaligon's outlet store where we buy ours form and this costs around £35 for the 50ml bottle and they do post items so it may be worth giving the store a ring to save a bit on the cost. It is also available from John Lewis and Harrods for a similar price to the main Penhaligon's stores.
This is a great masculine fragrance that last well all day for a small amount of spray due to its high quality ingredients. It has a wonderful citrus start before drying down into a woody spice mix that conjures days in the woods and earthy purists. I would recommend this for men wanting a sophisticated sensual blend. Both my husband and I can see why this fragrance is still going strong over 100 years after it was first developed as it is so sophisticated and sensuous. They also make various accompanying products such as shower gel shaving cream deodorant all of which are a wonderful way to layer more this scent.
Summary: A great scent for men that has stood the test of time with its wonderful citrus and woody musk blend
