My brother bought me the Ralph Lauren Polo Black gift set which included a 75 ml aftershave spray, a 50 ml after shave balm and a 50 ml body wash. I have to say that I was quite disappointed when I got round to my first use of it. Unfortunately I did not think that the smell was amazing. It is not so bad that I will not wear it, but I really though it would be good, as I do like some of the Ralph Lauren aftershaves.
I saw the advert for Polo Black last night and it seemed to sugges tthat it would be an approrpiate evening scent, as it was set at night time and had a 'man about town' image of a guy driving through a city. For me, an evening scent has to be relly big and quite powerful, as there are so many other smells that I want my fragrance to be noticed and easily recognised. For me though Polo Black is just not all that distinctive and the scent really wears off quite quickly - that is even when using the shower gel, after shave balm and after shave spray!
I am trying to think of what makes Polo Black distinctive, but then I do not think that it does stand out, to me it is a generic smell and not that unique. I like a Issey Miyake or Lacoste, as there are not many scents similar to them. This does not have that same instantly recognisable quality. Apparently the fragrance notes are 'Iced Mango, Silver Armoise, Patchouli Noir' - I do not really know what they should smell like!
I know a lot of people do not like Polo Green (the original one) but at least it is distinctive. This smells a lot lighter than the green version and does fade quite quickly. I actually think that this is quite bland and does not stand out. I personally will not be buying this again.
I see that on amazon you can pick up a 75 ml bottle for £30. It seeems that the gift pack that I received costs £38.50 in Boots. A 40 ml eau de toilette can be got for £30. 125 ml after shave costs roughly £32.
My advice is that if you are looking for a good strong evening after shave to give this one a miss and maybe pick up Hugo by Hugo Boss instead.
I bought Polo Black about a month ago after testing a number of other aftershaves and liking its smell the best. The smell itself is very pleasant, it combines fragrance with subtlety which is something I particularly like. I don't like aftershaves which smell too strongly but obviously you do want an aftershave that has a good smell that is evident just not completely obvious. I have had a few people I know comment on how nice the smell is since I have had the aftershave which is reassuring. The bottle itself is simple, yet attractive pure black with the Ralph Lauren logo sitting in the middle and a silver top. It is the epitomy of simplicity and suave I feel. I think that the price is reasonable bearing in mind the quality of the product and the name associated with it. If you are after a big name branded aftershave I think this is one of the best of the bunch in the market at the moment.
Ralph Lauren Polo Black is a great smelling frangrance in a stylish container. Simplicity is everything with this scent; the bottle displays only a single emblem on a black background - what more do we need to know, it's Polo, it's good.
The fragrance is wonderful. It is subtle and sophisticated, best suited to more formal occasions and evening events. This is definately a manly fragrance, however not body-builder but refined gentleman.
As nice a smell it is though, I find it wears off too quickly. Whilst other frangrances can be obvious all day, as should be expected, Polo Black seems to fade after a couple of hours. However, this didn't stop me buying my second bottle recently. This may be why I suggested it is suited to formal occasions which are often only a few hours.
Ralph Lauren: Polo Black - for some reason 'Black' seems to be the appropriate name; subtle, mysterious and straightforward.
I myself am very funny when it comes to aftershave. I know what I like and tend to stick to it. I dont like to change my fragrence too much or I end up smelling like ten different fragrances all at once. However at Christmas what is the number one gift you always revieve from people. You got it right aftershave. I am seriously sick of receiving aftershave constantly. I shouldnt be ungrateful though its just no one seems to like the same smells as me. I personally do not know much about the brand Ralph Lauren and to be honest who cares. Im reviewing the aftershave, not the brand like so many people seem to do just to make their review look big and bulky so please rate the review not the quantity.
Well first the bottle which the after shave comes in is extremely stylish and looks extremely sheek and stylish. I realy did like the look of the bottle. It looks both manly and stylish sat on your bathroom window cil or wherever you want to keep it. It is metallic black with a silver lid and the Ralph Lauren logo is white. I think the bottle is extremely nice looking myself. Not everyones cup of tea though I know.
The fragrance is refreshing and slightly tangy and strong at the same time. The fragrance also stays with you for hours and does not linger in a strong manner similar to other aftershaves which can be purchased. Only the smallest ammount of fragrance is needed in order to ensure you dont smell far too strong and start knocking people out.
Overall I would recomend this fragrance and say it can be worn for all occasions. A very manly smell which isnt too strong at the same time.
Thank you for readin my review.
What a gorgeous smell!!,But I have found that it doesn't last that well on my skin, which is disappointing.I like to have a long lasting fragrance, but I struggled to get any good smell after about 45 minutes.I have heard of others wearing it and it lasts,my brother wore mine, and he wants my bottle...!!,so am am slightly baffled. If you want to buy this,I recommend seeing if you can get a tester/sample spray,a cheap bottle,or lend some.I am sure you will like the smell, but will you be let down with the staying power, like me? This is quite expensive,so have a look around..
Launched in 2005, Ralph Lauren Polo Black is the newest fragrance from Ralph Lauren and was another of the large range of aftershaves given to me at Christmas.
I have always been a fan of Ralph Lauren fragrances and class Ralph Lauren Blue as one of the aftershaves that is guaranteed to have my wife lusting furiously after me wherever I go.
Available in both 50ml and 125ml bottles of the EDT or aftershave, prices range from £20 for the 50ml and £35 for the 125ml bottle. Personally I prefer to buy my aftershaves online due to the discounts available however this fragrance can be found in most duty free shops, perfume counters and most high street fragrance stores. I have seen bottles of this retailing in Selfridges for £40 for the 125ml bottle.
The marketing for Polo Black has been restricted with very little television and magazine coverage. Ralph Lauren being a very known worldwide brand tend to see word of mouth and their very well presented website as enough marketing when releasing a new fragrance onto the masses. What is clear from the Ralph Lauren literature is that Polo Black has been designed for the urban professional, being sexy, mysterious and slightly dangerous. Ultimately described by the marketing blurb as modern, daring and sophisticated.
The picture above shows the bottle, black in colour surprisingly and very elegant looking. It's easy to spot and very easy to hold and apply. Unfortunately Polo Black does not come with any printed notes making it very hard to judge what this should smell like on application and dry down, however from further research it is clear that Polo Black contains iced mango, silver armoise and patchouli noir,
The first application of this fragrance was a pleasant surprise, a few sprays from the atomiser produced a very good coverage of the aftershave and there was little to no burn at all even after just shaving. The first thing to strike the senses is the very light nature of the fragrance, this smells clean and crisp and something of a sensory pleasure. The mango provides a fruity base to the fragrance which does make this very light initially but as the fragrance begins to dry it is clear that there is tea and pepper contained within the formula as the fragrance becomes warmer and slightly heavier on the nose.
After finally drying down completely after around half an hour all of the ingredients blend wonderfully, the dry mango is still the overriding fragrance, however the patchouli blends to give a more balanced well defined edge that makes this more masculine. Without this I would have said it was aimed more at the female of the species, as it simply was too light and fruity.
As stated earlier, only 3 squirts of the atomiser are required to give a very good cover of the aftershave meaning that a 50 ml bottle will last for well over 6 months. I have had mine for 3 months and it still isn't half empty making this very good value for money when taking the purchase price into consideration.
In terms of longevity Polo Black is exceptionally hardwearing, as you would expect from a quality brand name. Polo Black is noticeable well over 10 hours after application and I'm happy to report that my wife loves this as much as Polo Blue, and colleagues at work have commented on the lovely new fragrance I wear. Polo Black is indeed a modern new fragrance that has a masculine edge, fruity aroma that will not overload the senses making it a perfect all purpose aftershave great for daywear, special occasions and romantic nights out.
Polo Black is perfect. With both Polo Blue and Black Ralph Lauren have moved away from the traditional heavier rugged fragrances and in my opinion this is by far the best fragrance in their range, closely followed by Blue and Polo Sport.
Thanks for taking the time to read and rate.
