A while ago I placed an order online (I think it was from HQHair but I'm not 100% sure) and when it arrived it contained a few little samples including a small spray vial of Feragamo's F for Fascinating Night perfume.
I must admit I had never heard of Feragamo at the time, but since I've heard the name mentioned many times, especially on American TV shows. Salvatore Feragamo is actually an Italian shoe designer who also makes accessories as well as a range of fragrances. The one I am reviewing is F for Fascinating Night which is a follow up to a previous fragrance, F for Fascinating.
~*~ The bottle ~*~
Of course as I received this as a sample I don't have the full sized bottle, so I cannot go into too much detail. The bottle though is rectangular glass through which you can see the pale pink liquid and a curved base. Based on seeing it in store I wouldn't automatically be drawn to the bottle as I feel it is very plain and not particularly special looking.
The perfume is officially described as 'a refined floral-woody-chypre Eau de Parfum, where jasmine and rose combine with the caressing tones of patchouli and musk, for an even more unforgettable fragrance.'
The top notes of the fragrance (those that can be smelled as soon as the fragrance has been sprayed) are pink pepper and mandarin. Surprisingly I find that I can clearly smell both of these notes (my own interpretation of a scent rarely matches the official description) and would say that I can smell both ingredients in equal measure. Although perhaps it sounds like an odd combination on paper, the spicy warmth of the pepper combines incredibly well with the sharp, sweet tang of the mandarin. I think it smells quite luxurious and it's quite a warm and even, dare I say sexy combination.
As the scent settles on the skin the heart notes of the fragrance start to come out. These are the jasmine and rose. Again, both of these can clearly be detected, however the depth of the pink pepper still remains. The jasmine scent actually reminds me of the 'Midnight Jasmine' Yankee Candle, but a little bit softer and the rose is quite sweet, rather than being an old fashioned powdery rose. The jasmine is by far the stronger of the two fragrances and combined with the tones of pink pepper, smells incredibly sensual and luxurious.
Base notes of the scent are musk, patchouli and amber. Whilst I can detect musk and amber in the fragrance I don't notice the patchouli. I have to admit that I own a lot of fragrances which have patchouli as a base note and I rarely notice it, so I'm beginning to think it's just me! It takes a good while before the fragrance begins to change and I start to notice these base notes, and even then I find that the pink pepper smell remains for the duration that I wear the scent.
In my opinion this is the perfect evening scent and it's very sensual and sexy which makes it perfect for wearing on a date. I personally don't think I would wear this scent during the day as I prefer something a bit lighter, but saying that I don't think its too strong or heavy for daytime wear - I simply save it for nights on personal preference.
The strength and staying power of this scent is fantastic. I only have a small vial but it has lasted me over a year and I'd say I wear it about twice a month. I think the reason I've got so much use from it, is that one spray to my wrist is strong enough as the scent is quite powerful. It's only if applying this before a night out I apply a spray to my neck as well - I feel any more than this would be too strong and overpowering, as this really is quite an intense fragrance.
As for staying power, it will last several hours. I can go out at 8pm and still smell this on my skin coming home at 2am - even if I've been stuck in some hot and sweaty club. I've even on one or two occasions worn this on an evening and still been able to smell it on my skin the next morning, so longevity is really a strong point of the scent.
As for age range, I am 27 and love this. It is possibly a bit on the heavy side for teenagers, but I think early twenties and upwards would like this, although of course fragrance is a very personal thing and it's hard to pinpoint an exact age group. My mother is in her fifties for example and I've no doubt she'd wear this too given the chance.
~*~Price and Availability~*~
Until recently I had only ever seen this in store at John Lewis, however having just checked their website it seems they are no longer stocking it. I have found it online however, at www.cheapsmells.com where it costs £19.70 for a 30ml bottle and £28.35 for a 50ml bottle. This is actually half the price John Lewis were charging when they sold it, so I will definitely buy myself a bottle, as before I could never justify it based on the John Lewis price.
If you are looking for a sexy, sensual night time fragrance, then I would thoroughly recommend F for Fascinating night. It's quite an unusual and luxurious scent and I always feel really special when I wear it, so it's a full five stars from me.
