Review of Spirit of Moonflower Eau de Toilette
I have owned this fragrance for a couple of years.
The fragrance was part of a Body Shop gift set that I was given as a Christmas present. We have a very deep vanity unit in our bathroom and for some reason this gift set had been pushed to the back of the cupboard and forgotten. When I rediscovered it unopened, I decided to open it up and use the products.
The gift set contained a bottle of this fragrance, a matching body lotion, shower cream and soap, all attractively presented in a pretty maroon coloured box fastened with contrasting satin ribbon.
This review will concentrate on the fragrance.
The fragrance is presented in a clear glass bottle with a silver cap which hides the spray mechanism. The actual scent is a pale pink in colour; it looks very feminine although I must admit the bottle is nothing remarkable, in fact it is rather plain in design. My bottle contains 60ml of eau de toilette. The spray works well, dispensing just the right amount of fragrance in a fine mist with each depression of the button.
This fragrance is a fruity/floral; it is a light, refreshing scent with top notes of coriander, moonflower, gardenia and melon. The middle notes are cyclamen, lime blossom and lily-of-the-valley; base notes are jasmine and rose.
On first sniff, sadly I can definitely detect the melon, sadly as I am not particularly fond of melon scents! Fortunately for me these soon fade, leaving a delicate floral scent on my skin. The fragrance lasts reasonably well and the jasmine and rose notes are deep scents which linger well on my skin. I can also detect a light citrus under note in this fragrance.
Being an eau de toilette obviously this is not going to last as well as a perfume made with perfume oils. I found that this fragrance lasted for approximately 3 to 4 hours before dissipating and needing to be reapplied. For a chain store range, I consider this to be very good, although it must be borne in mind that a fragrances that lasts well on one person's skin may not do so well on someone else. Fragrances tend to cling better to skin that is naturally oily or moist from a shower; this is because of the evaporating properties of the alcohol which is mixed with many scents.
You can help your eau de toilette linger by layering your scent with matching products such as shower creams, body lotions and so on.
**My Thoughts and Conclusion**
Body Shop Spirit of Moonflower is an inoffensive, minimalistic fruity floral fragrance and one I would recommend for everyday wear as it is so fresh and light. I feel this would be suited to women of all age groups. In my opinion, this fragrance is similar in style to 'Be Delicious' by DKNY, but cheaper! This fragrance has a lot going for it as it lasts fairly well (on me!) although it is not something I would buy for myself as I prefer a deep, oriental type scent.
I have looked on the Body Shop website to find current pricing of this fragrance but can see no mention of it. The fragrance was introduced way back in 2000, so possibly it is no longer stocked, however I have found that the fragrance can be purchased from other sources such as EBay and the myriad of online fragrance shops that seem to specialise in hard to find scents.
I would recommend this to others if as a decent daywear fragrance, it is not really 'me', but it is very pleasant and fresh. It is a pity that Body Shop's website no longer lists Spirit of Moonflower and for this reason I am awarding the fragrance with a 3* rating.

Another sad story from The Body Shop.
t's the same one I wrote about in my review of 'Leap!', another of The Body Shop's Eau de Toilette range. What began as the Body Shop's heyday, with popular and innovative fragrances being produced left right an centre as a result of the genius of Mark Constantine, this soon began to decline and or/be discontinued once Mr Constantine established a soon to be huge company, known as 'Lush'. Ever since, Moonflower, Leap! et al have been extremely difficult to find, with perfume-hockers on sites like Ebay selling highly rare to find bottles for $50-$100 a piece.
Or, they could just buy them from the American site, thebodyshop-us.com. I think there's even free shipping.
This is a delicate, floral scent, much like the magical legend of the moonflower. It is a romantic, pretty and floral scent, for dreamers, romantics and sensually sexy ladies.
The top notes of this are melon, coriander, and gardenia. The middle notes are moonflower, cyclamen, lily and lime blossom. The base notes: jasmine and rose.
As with all of The Body Shop's stuff, it's non-greasy, natural and good for sensitive skin. It's easy to carry around and smells sexy. It just might be difficult to get hold of...
I absolutely love "spirit of the moonflower" fragrance. It's soft, sweet, happy and light . It makes me smile and I feel mellow and sensuous when I'm wearing it. I've been looking for it but can't find it anywhere. If anyone can tell me how to order more. Please let me know. I've checked with the Body shop, but it has not been available.
Before Christmas we had the usual Secret Santa shenanigans at work. Now as much as I love Christmas (boy do I lurve Christmas!) I wasn't all that excited about the gift exchange this year due to the fact that for the last three years running I have ended up with a stingy box of chocs (I must sound sooo ungrateful but a little bit of thought wouldn't go amiss!)
However, times are a changing and this year (well last year) I was in for a pleasant surprise. After squeezing and shaking my prezzie I knew that my Secret Santa person would live to see another day for this was definitely no box of chocolates. The present was a Body Shop gift set containing 'The Spirit of Moonflower' goodies including the subject of my review - the eau de toilette.
A bit of history
The Body Shop was established in Brighton in 1976 by Anita Roddick. Roddick started her business with 25 kinds of products in five different sizes of bottles, designed to be refilled. This way of selling the products gained popularity, and now the Body Shop has more than 1,200 branches in 45 countries.
The Body Shop's main aim is to make the world a better place to live in by returning more to society than they receive. It believe's that just to pursue profit without having principles is wrong and to be avoided. The Body Shop's principles are environmental protection, consideration for human rights and civil rights, movements against animal testing in cosmetic trade, fair trade and so on.
Their most famous policy is that all of their products are "natural" and "100 percent pure."
It stands at about 3" high and my bottle holds 30ml. I believe you can also buy it in a larger 60ml size.
The bottle is made of clear glass with a hint of salmon pink. There is light pink italic writing on the front stating that it's 'the spirit of moonflower' (no my grammar is not poor - it is written completely in lower case on the bottle!) And, of course you've got the well known Body Shop logo there on the front too.
On first setting eyes on the bottle, I thought the lid had come off; however it is actually just a small, bog standard cap in a matt silver finish with the Body Shop logo embossed on the top. This slides off revealing a matt silver push pump spray thingamajig (yes, that is the technical term!).
When it comes to all things smelly, I'm very particular. I usually only stick to one brand of perfume (Cerruti 1881) as I know it smells nice on me and isn't overpowering or headache inducing for me and those who smell me! (Not that I have people sniffing me all day!)
That is why moonflower is perfect for me. It's very delicate but noticeable in a non offensive kind of way. It's sweet without be sickly.
This is the description of the spray on the Body Shop's website:
'As night falls the rare Moonflower uncurls its petals to reveal a beautiful white satiny bloom filling the air with it's light floral scent'
Aaah! Isn't that lovely!
I would say that the light floral scent part is pretty accurate although in my opinion this is more of an underlying smell. I would describe it as having more of a fruity hint about it. Infact the fragrance notes according to the website are:
Top: Melon, Green Complex, Coriander, Gardenia
Middle: Lily of the Valley, Moonflower, Lime Blossom, Cyclamen
Base: Jasmine, Rose.
A lot of perfumes I have tried in the past don't tend to last long at all but Moonflower stays on all day and what's more, it holds it's crisp fresh aroma throughout the day too.
Although it's quite versatile I think 'Moonflower' is definitely a "day" perfume. It's good for these cold winter days as it has quite an uplifting summery scent and it's perfect for the summertime due to the fact that it is such a light and airy perfume.
It costs £6.00 for the 30ml bottle. It's definitely good value for money as you just need a couple of quick squirts and it's on for the day. Obviously if you douse yourself in it then this will affect the value quite dramatically!
Would I recommend 'Spirit of Moonflower'?
Yes, I would highly recommend it to people of all ages unless you prefer heavier, musky scents. However, if you're like me and can't carry off a strong smelling perfume, then I would definitely give this a try.
Get down to your nearest Body Shop and get a couple of squirts free first!
Thank you for reading.
The only time I go in The Body Shop is when I'm at Euston Station and bored stiff with staring up at the arrivals/departures board awaiting my train. I confess from the start that I am not really a fan of theirs. I do like the make-up, but otherwise I find their products overpriced and ineffective. Having said that, though, the last time I was in there I was rather taken by their Spirit of Moonflower fragrance. Spirit of Moonflower was apparently created to mirror the 'desert moonflower', a rare and exotic bloom. As I've never been to the desert, never mind encountered the rare desert moonflower, I can't vouch for the authenticity of this. I can say, however, that it smells very nice indeed. Spirit of Moonflower goes out and out for femininity. I'm not normally attracted to extremely feminine perfumes, but this one was different to the usual florals you find in that category. The bottle is designed in the 'less is more' tradition, being a tall frosted glass tube with matt silver lid. The Body Shop logo and other information is etched onto the glass in unobtrusive white. Simple and classic, and a stylish addition to any dressing table or bathroom shelf. Spirit of Moonflower contains linden blossom, moonflower, cyclamen, and a base of Jasmine and Lily. The moonflower is synthetic, but I believe that real essences are used from the other flowers. The perfume definitely smells 'floral', though I would never have guessed which florals were in it. As well as that, it has a melony aroma. When I first tried it on my wrist it reminded me of a bag of sweeties, but later settled into a light, fresh and slightly sweet mellowness. Whenever I wear Spirit of Moonflower (which I do mostly for work), people always ask what it is. No one seems to find it offensive. Because of its light, innocuous nature, I would term it more of a daytime scent. It certainly wouldn'
t be able to rise above the competing smells of everyone else's perfume in a club or bar of an evening, but also because of its light, innocuous nature, you can walk into the office with it on safe in the knowledge that no one is going to keel over from the fumes. So far, so good, but there is a problem. Staying power. Alas, Spirit of Moonflower had hardly any. Within one to hours of putting it on, the smell has completely disappeared. Not good if you're wanting it to carry you through a day at work, and meaning that you have to carry it around with you in your handbag - and it's not handbag sized. I paid £10 for Spirit of Moonflower in a larger than average spray bottle, which doesn't seem like bad value until you consider that you will have to apply it about 3 times throughout the day, whereas more expensive fragrances will often last for hours and hours. I don't think I'll bother buying Spirit of Moonflower again, but because the smell is so lovely I can't criticize it too much. Also available in the range are body lotion, soap, shower gel and bath quake, which could extend the staying power on the 'attack from all sides' technique, but this would work out quite expensive. I think next time I'm waiting at Euston I might go for the Spirit of Moonflower home fragrance oil and candles instead, which I've been told are longer lasting. And it would make a terrific scent for any room in the house.
I simply love the smell of this new body shop fragrence. The spirit of Moonflower as it is called is the latest smell to come out of Body Shop and it has me over the moon with its really refreshing yet delicate scent. It smells lightly floral with a hint of citrus without being too feminine, which is what I like about it. It has a good staying power even when you only use the body spray. The scent is taken apparently from a rare desert flower, which rarely blooms. This makes it all the more special and puts it at a higher price than the regular body shop scents. I even have the shower gel and intend to get the body lotion soon to complete the range. For guys looking to buy a present, this is a good buy as it is neutral enough for anyone to like it. I certainly will never tire of the smell. Thanks very much for reading and rating this Op
