A well-blended and unusual coffe-themed floral oriental fragrance

      Launched: 2001
      Group: Oriental floral

      ~ INTRODUCTION ~

I decided to order this fragrance when looking for a similar smelling but better done 'Extraordinary' from Avon which disapponted me in practically not having any base notes developing on my skin. It also attracted me because I love and collect scents having coffee notes in them (Cacharel Noa, Trussardi Inside, Isabel Deroisne Ilaya). After reading some reviews on Fragrantica.com L'Or sounded just the ticket.

      ~ THE PACKAGING ~

The unusual, oblong and heavy glass bottle is partially covered with gold, engraved leaves on the top. You may not notice from the photo but the leaves on the sides of the bottle are actually part of the embossed glass itself so the golden colour doesn't feel at all 'painted' but rather as part of the glass design. The glass is chunky and heavy. There's no lid on the fragrance, you spray by pressing down the nozzle which is in fact a painted aluminium form. The carton packaging is a grainy white and golden colour and on the front it has the watermark of the bottle.

      ~ THE FRAGRANCE ~

Top notes: magnolia, litchi, blackcurrant, kiwi, mandarin orange

Torrente L'Or starts out with bright, fresh and zesty notes where the most dominant notes is citrus mixed with hints of amber and woods, that give it a sparkling and slightly bitter cologne type of note similar to Avon's Extraordinary. Overall, an interesting start that's more zesty than sweet which goes well with the oriental theme of the fragrance.

Middle notes: iris, coffee, cedar, angelica, rose

About half an hour later I detect a coffee note that blends in with some of the citrusy top notes and some of the deeper, creamier base notes. The overall feel is similar to that of Avon's Extraordinary, except we get a coffee note instead of a dark chocolate, and the composition is more rounded and oriental due to the right balance between lighter and heavier accords.

The lovely, warm, spicy coffe scent on me then turns into a cappucino smell and I'm also getting some lovely 'dusty' cedar, the way I like it. The coffee smell dominates for about an hour before a more typical, floral oriental phase develops where a mixture of citrus, warm spices and a hint of orchid (floral vanilla) mingle together creating a feminine composition that's made alluring and unusual by the still floating and contrasting notes of cofee.

Base notes: vanilla, coffee, woodsy notes, amber

The final, soft and dry accords or L'Or are made up of tender, woodsy notes of pathouli and sandalwood. It has a luminous effect that's reflected in the artful bottle and outer packaging too. L'Or has a well-developed and long-lasting drydown that eventually evolves into a distinguished classic oriental scent: woods interwoven by creamy, non-foody but rather spicy vanilla and smoky amber. The staying power is a good 8 - 10 hours with a nice sillage too.

      ~ CONCLUSION ~

I'm absolutely delighted by L'Or and never expected to like it as much as I do buying it unsniffed. I decided to keep Avon's Extraordinary as it does resembles L'Or slightly in its sparkling citrus-coffee accord, though it never turns into that deep and dark oriental like L'Or where the ambery accords dominate the most. I'll wear Extraordinary in summer as it's more suited to hot weather just like most Avon fragrances, it's light and doesn't have a heavy base. L'Or is better suited to autumn / winter and evening wear.

To sum up, L'Or Eau de Parfum is an underrated, unique and creatively blended scent from a French haute couture house more famous for their extravagant clothing themes and catwalk events. If 'Nu' from Yves Saint Laurent is a strong, black oriental coffee served in its shiny midnight blue cup, L'Or is a less in your face sexy , better-tempered, gourmand frappucino on a hot summer afternoon placed on a golden tray.

      ~ PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ~

L'Or Eau de Parfume isn't readily available in shops in or outside France. It can be found on Amazon.co.uk, at the moment it's available at a reasonable price of £31.24 / 100ml Eau de Parfum.

      Thanks for reading.
