Advantages: None. Sorry!
Disadvantages: Far too strong a fragrance.
~~Reasons For Purchasing~~
I received this Opium parfum from Yves Saint Laurent for a Christmas present from my Mother and was quite excited on trying it out. I had remembered trying out this perfume, many years ago, but I could not remember if I liked it or not, so I could not wait to try this perfume out again and remember it's fragrance. I really love trying out new fragrances and am slightly addictive to buying new perfumes and even picking out unusual bottles for my collection, so I was rather pleased to have received a few different ones for Christmas presents. My Mother had told me that the present she had bought me was expensive, so I was well pleased about this.
~~Design Of Gift Box~~
This Yves Saint Laurent Opium Parfum, came in a beautiful little Autumn red presentation box, with gold bamboo leaves etched on to it. It really looked very nice and quite an expensive looking gift box indeed. It also had the name Opium beautifully etched in gold lettering across the middle of the box and it really looked beautiful on the red background. It also had the size, which is 30ml clearly stated at the bottom. Overall a lovely gift box containing Yves Saint Laurent perfume, that would also make a great gift for friends. The design is very nice indeed.
~~Design Of Parfum Bottle~~
When I opened up the gift box, I was slightly disapointed to see an older style bottle of perfume, it did compliment it's beautiful gift box some what, but it really is in need of some up dating 'in my opinion'. The Yves Saint Laurent came in a 30ml glass bottle with some etchings of flowers and leaves on it, and has a rather thin red/brown plastic lid edged in gold. Overall for such an expensive perfume, this bottle really lets it down. It has a good spray nosel on this bottle though, and lets out the perfect amount of perfume, in just one spray, which I like. Overall the bottle is not very eyecatching at all though.
~~Yves Saint Laurent Opium Parfum Fragrance~~
I had remembered trying out this perfume, many years ago, but I could not remember if I liked it or not, so I could not wait to try this perfume out again and remember it's fragrance. On smelling this perfumes fragrance though, I really was taken back with how strong it smelt. Goodness it nearly knocked me out. On my first impression, I thought "this is awful" and felt sorry for my Mother, who had wasted her money on something I did not like. It has a very strong spicey scent of Mandarine - Jasmine - Carnation and Vanilla to it, but I think it's notes, really do not blend well at all. It also smells quite fruity and oriental, but it really is a very strong and over powering smell and I really disliked it a lot.
I give Yves Saint Laurent Opium Parfum, the benefit of the doubt though and sprayed some on my wrist, but 'boy' it is powerful and really not to my liking at all. My daughter and husband both screwed up their faces and commented on the awful strong scent. Well I was really annoyed, but left it on my wrist and smelt it again about one hour later. It certainly had faded a good bit, but there was just something about that perfume that I and my family really did not like at all. I really felt awful about disliking this fragrance in such a way, but I have to say, this is the worst one I have ever used before. I guess everyone is different though, and I am sure there must be someone out there who loves this fragrance, so I would say it would be an evening one to wear because it is very strong.
~~Top Notes~~
*Coriander.
*Clove.
*Bayleaf.
*Pepper.
*Vetiver.
*Lily of the valley.
*Patchouli.
*Amber.
I suppose this is quite a strong blend of notes in this perfume, which creates this very unique fragrance and it is definately an evening wearing fragrance, because it is very strong. It is a feminine scent though, but not one I personally would ever choose, for myself.
~~Overall Opinion Of Perfume~~
This bottle of Opium perfume by Yves Saint Laurent, now lies redundant on my dressing table, as I cannot stand the over powering scent of it, at all and do not have the heart to tell my Mother, that I really cannot stand this fragrance. Of course this is my own opinion of this expensive perfume and I am sure there is women out there, that really do love this scent, but sorry it certainly is not for me at all. It is a far too strong smelling for me and I really dislike the mix of notes in contains, that give out this horrible fragrance. The only nice thing about this perfume, would have to be the gift box. It really looks very nice and I was pleased with it, but I cannot say the same about the perfume bottle or the fragrance. Overall I really would not recommend this perfume, unless you love strong fragrances. I do not want to run this perfume down, as others out there must like it, but it really is not for me at all. Sorry Yves Saint Laurent. Never again!

Summary: I really disliked fragrance and blend. Also it was too overpowering.
