Advantages: Long lasting fragrance, Smells lovely, Easy to find in most perfume stores

Disadvantages: May be too overpowering for some, More expensive than some other designer perfumes

My husband has been working away in Crete and returned home on Friday bearing gifts. One of the gifts he bought for me was a bottle of Opium perfume, this has been a favourite perfume of mine for many years and I normally only receive it for Birthdays and Christmas so it was a real bonus to receive a bottle so close to Christmas, especially as I can now choose another fragrance for Christmas, lol.

Opium is made in France and was created by French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. It has been around for some years and I was first introduced to it when staying with my Auntie as a young teenager, back in the 1980's, she was wearing it and I can still remember thinking then that it smelled lovely and dreaming that one day I would be able to afford to buy it for myself.

Fortunately the day came when I could afford to buy it for myself - unfortunately, since it isn't cheap and I now have other more important priorities in my life I can't afford to keep treating myself to it so I normally only receive it as a gift these days.

Opium is easily recognisable as it is packaged in an rather classy, brightly coloured terracotta cardboard box which is decorated with gold leaves. The word Opium is classily printed on the front of the packaging, also in gold writing.

The perfume is classily packaged within an attractive transparent, oval shaped, slender glass bottle which has leaves embossed on to the glass. The front of the bottle has the wording Opium and Eau de Toilette written in terracotta.

The bottle is topped with a plastic terracotta, oval shaped lid which is trimmed with gold and has a gold top. Once the lid is removed it reveals the atomiser spray style pump which is also coloured gold.

The perfume is an deep amber coloured liquid and immediately you remove the lid and sniff the pump you are able to smell the scent.

Opium has a strong heavy scent, which I would describe as being musky, oriental,

woody, sexy, sensual, sultry, classy and expensive. As Opium is a heavy scent it is probably one of those fragrances that you either love or hate, similar to Poison, I love it but accept that it is an acquired taste.

I sometimes wear Opium during the day but because of its' powerful aroma it is really more of an evening fragrance. One important thing to remember with Opium is that you only need a small squirt as the scent is so concentrated - unfortunately with all perfumes it is always more difficult to smell the scent on yourself and you can quite easily overdo the spraying and knock out everybody around you. On a more positive note though because Opium is so strong it does last for ages and you do not need to keep reapplying it every few hours, I applied mine at around 9.00am yesterday morning and it was still noticeably strong at 10pm when I had a shower.

If you haven't smelled Opium before I would recommend you try a tester spray even if you are not normally a great lover of heavy perfumes - I don't normally wear heavy perfumes but Opium is unique and it does smell really classy, expensive and sexy - perfect if you are planning a night of passion!!! Now you know why Barry bought me this instead of a lighter more floral perfume!!!

The Eau de Toilette and perfume are available in several sizes and prices do vary enormously from retailer to retailer so it is well worth shopping around. If you can't be bothered to traipse from shop to shop you can always do a "compare prices" search online using one of the many online search engines - to find details of these you can go to www.google.co.uk and type in compare prices into the "search" prompt - Google will then bring up a list of websites specifically designed to compare prices on a variety of products, this is great as it take as the legwork out of the exercise as well as saving you money.

I received the 50 ml sized bottle of EDT and as I
rece
ived it as a gift I am not sure how much it cost but in the nature of research I telephone my local Boots store to check the price and was advised that it retails for £44.00. At the moment Boots have a special offer on the Opium Gift Sets which include the 50 ml sized EDT plus a shower gel and body lotion for £44.00 so if you are going to buy Opium it is definitely worth buying the gift set even if you don't want the extras as you can always give them away for presents.

If you find that you like the Opium fragrance you may wish to try some of the other products that Yves Saint Laurent have produced to compliment the perfume - these include soap, shower gel and body lotion, etc.

Opium is easy to obtain as it is sold in most major perfume retailers, chemists and department stores.

Thank you for reading.
