Yves Saint Laurent is the more commonly known name of Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent (1938-2008), known more for fashion design.
The name of this perfume is the french La Rive Gauche which translates the left bank and refers to the river Seine in Paris.
This perfume was created in 1971 according to wiki. It is described as bold and vivacious, with warm woody florals of oak moss and sandalwood, accompanied by magnolia, gardenia and honeysuckle. I am not good at smelling tones and nuances, to me it smells fruity but not overly so, and on reading its tones, I can smell the accompanying woodiness.
My mother gave me this perfume and it smells floral and vibrant and I can still smell after a long day at work which shows real staying power as I work in an often hot environment and my job can be quite physical.
The perfume is packaged in lovely 'bottle' but made of an aerosol type material, with very distinctive blue, silver and black stripes going round the bottle. It looks very nice and quite distinctive on my bathroom cabinet.
Mine is a 75ml spray, but also comes in 30, 50 and 100ml.
It is quite expensive, although mine was a gift, retailing at a cost of £47 for 100ml. Although its well worth a surf around the online fragrance stores.
I will rate this 4/5 as smells fantastic, has great staying power but very expensive. I would buy again but not with that price tag as its too expensive for my budget.
To the best of memory, save my mother's Chanel Champagne that I was occasionally permitted to borrow, this is the first perfume I was introduced to, at a fairly young age. On board a ferry, we were given samples, and I guess all the members of my family got one each because perhaps we were still cute. Since then I have 'borrowed' this perfume from others on occasions and perhaps part of my love of it stems from the memories it induces. Nonetheless I will try my best to talk about this perfume 'objectively'.
The sample I had was an almost exact imitation of the real bottle, the cutest and most impressive I have come across. Perhaps however, this is just because the actual bottle is pretty simple. A slender. metallic tube shape, it has a much less fragile feel to it than other perfumes. On first glance it may not look expensive or even fancy. This should not fool you into doubting its quality, because the design of a bright blue with bands of silver and black makes it look quite contemporary and smart. As it does not have the usual transparent glass exposing the perfume to sunlight, if I had a room with colours that matched, I would happily display it on my dresser. That is one of the first minor troubles, of course, as not many people own bright blue rooms.
Still, it is not unappealing in a strange way, and I actually like the tin feel of it, and the way it clicks open and shut.
The perfume has quite a generous spray, (I'm not talking about my sample here, just to be clear) and I do not generally like this about perfume bottles. Perhaps I need to accept that these companies are going to want you to use up the perfumes as quickly as possible in order to keep buying more. However, the mist is not over concentrated and I always try to spray just once and spread to both wrists and the neck.
I do love this particular scent, but I realise that might also be to do with my own personal experience of the perfume, which is something we will all find different. However, it does have a lovely fruity, flowery and fresh smell to it that I very much enjoy. It is actually very hard to describe in words, although those three words seem as close as I can get. I am no expert in distinguishing particular scents and this perfume I have always found hardest to do that with. What I can say is that unlike a lot of perfumes that tend to be only slightly different, this one is completely unique.
The scent is slightly strong, but for just this one perfume I do actually like that. It probably would give me a headache if overdone and I was stuck in a closed room, but so far that has not happened. I often wear this fragrance in the daytime or late afternoon, when out and about, but whilst I would not wear it so often as to ever risk getting bored of this perfume, I do think it can be worn at any time of day and is suitable for most occasions. If I were rich I would probably buy this as a 'daily' spray, but then I have to remember I would prefer it to stay special!
This perfume, unlike many, has stood the test of time, in terms of popularity. It has become something of a quiet classic, the type that you rarely hear about but seems to be liked by many. This can also be said for its physical fragrance, which seems to last all day or evening. It is the kind that will stick to your clothes too, so when you put your coat on the next day those pleasant memories (I hope..) will come flooding back as you catch the scent. Even with a small amount, I find this one lasts well, so it can be used for those all day events and long weddings or other parties that you socialites might attend.
This perfume seems to appeal to a wide range of people, and although it is an older and more classic perfume, I think it would happily suit younger generations too, since I even loved it from childhood. It really can be worn at any time of the day and in any season, but my personal preference would be in mild or cool weather outdoors as it is long lasting and still noticeable.
Well I think I found it a little difficult not to overpraise this fragrance, but I really do think that it is a purchase you would not regret. Right now I have too many perfumes and too little money, but this one is definitely at the top of my list. In the meantime I will continue to annoy family members by sneaking into their rooms for a quick spray!
Rive Gauche from Yves St Laurent is such a classic scent. I used to wear this all the time in the past and so I feel I know it very well indeed. I have always found that Rive Gauche is very classy and lasts really well when its on the skin. Everything about the scent is timeless and classic and I feel it can be worn and loved by ladies of all ages.
My last Rive Gauche fragrance came in a super bottle which was made from glass with the iconic bright blue, sliver and black horizontal stripes on it that has been its trade mark look ever since I have known it. I have also seen Rive Gauche in a metal casing in the past which seemed to be made from aluminium as it was very light. I must say I feel the glass version is nicer.
I once dropped a glass bottle of this and broke the plastic blue toned lid, yet the smooth glass bottle survived intact. I would say the quality and strength offered by the glass bottles used to contain this is very good. I really like the way the fragrance is presented and I feel the box and the bottle look very smart and would make a lovely gift.
Prices for Rive Gauche are not too bad when you consider this is a well known fragrance. I have found that very often Boots have it on offer with good reductions in price. At the moment Boots are selling the 30ml bottle at £19.99 reduced from £30 which is a nice reduction. Larger bottles can be in either 50ml or 100ml sizes with heftier price tags to match that.
I would think that the easiest way to describe the smell of this is as a lightly woody floral scent that softens over time but still has a certain tang even after many hours of wear. Some people may consider that this tangy quality to be rather bitter but I don't feel thats the case . I do feel its part of the signature of Rive Gauche and I really like it.
The floral elements include juicy peach, iris and gardenia, these hit you when you spritz this on and then soften but still remain. Lily of the valley is one of the pillars of the scent and remains the whole time that its on my skin. Amber is one of the base notes and gives a certain warmth to what may have been a very cool and cold feeling scent if it had not been included.
A I feel that Rive Gauche is a classic scent it can be worn any time. I have sometimes had to spray more on as the scent softens over the course of the day, but not so much that I used up all up quickly because of it. As far as rating Rive Gauche goes I feel it has to score highly as it still holds it own even after almost 40 years, so with everything in mind I want to give it 4 stars.
Launched by the design house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1971, Rive Gauche is classified as a floral fragrance.
I have been wearing this perfume probably from almost its launch date in 1971. The distinctive blue, black and silver packaging of the box and bottle has never changed and is of a classic design.
Rive Gauche is a sophisticated perfume with heart notes of Gardenia, magnolia, iris, jasmine, ylang ylang, top notes of peach lemon, bergamot and honeysuckle and base notes of amber, sandalwood, tonka bean, vetiver and oak moss and it has a glorious floral scent. It can be worn equally for day or evening wear.
The meaning of Rive Gauche - is Left Bank, being the Left Bank of the Seine in Paris, where there is a trendy, avant-garde, glamorous, bohemian lifestyle, and wearing the perfume certainly makes me feel glamorous, elegant and natural.
The perfume to me is a classic and although I have toyed with other fragrances I always come back to this one. It is certainly in my top 5 fragrances.
Yves Saint Laurent: Rive Gauche, Eau de Toilette is yet another aboslutely brilliant perfume. Most of my reviews ae actually on perfumes as i love them. I wear a different perfume depending on my mood and what i am doing/ where i am going. I feel that this perfume is suitable foany ages even though it is often worn by women of a younger age. I feel that this Yves Saint Laurent perfume is sophiscated with a very distinctive aroma that i could recognise straight away. This perfume is like marmite... it is not like many other perfumes which are commonly floral based, it is unique and great to wear whatever the occasion.
The packaging for this perfume again like the perfume itself is unique. It comes in a bright blue and black case which contains metal as well. Price is very reasonable as it is a mid -price perfume as is a lot cheaper than the likes of chanel and anna sui.
-RIVE GAUCHE POUR FEMME-
- By Yves St Laurent -
'Rive Gauche is a state of mind, a way of being, a lifestyle, a unique 'Avant-Garde' perfume for an independent and unpredictable woman' -
That's me! :)
Launched in 1971 by the French Haute Couture Fashion House, Yves St Laurent, Rive Gauche is a stunning classical and timeless fragrance from this French designer. Designed to capture the atmosphere and ambience of the famous 'Left Bank' of Paris, Rive Gauche is a sexy and sophisticated perfume that withstands the march of time. -
Rive Gauche translates into 'Left Bank', 'Left Shore' which stands for the left hand side of the river Seine. This perfume was made to represent the bohemian and intellectual quarter of Paris where the YSL Fashion House stands on the exclusive row of shops on Avenue Marceau. Rive Gauche is a perfume that has been created for a 'free and independent women, a gracious inhabitant of the city who likes the sun and wind more than anything but who is also quintessentially metropolitan'.
In 2003 Yves St Laurent saw fit to re-orchestrate this classic fragrance and under the creative direction of Tom Ford, the floral middle note of Rive Gauche was altered and Rose absolute was added to bring some modernisation to the scent, but what has actually occurred is that the perfume has lost some of its edge and the perfect harmony of accords is set off balance. It still has the same fragrance but the drying down has been affected and the sharp features of this scent have been smoothed as they felt was dictated by modern trend.
The Rive Gauche perfume is distinguishable by its unique and stylish container, which is a vivid blue, black and shiny silver in colour and encased within a slim metal cylinder which comes within its matching box. The weight of the Eau de Toilette atomiser that I own is 100ml/3.03oz and because of its slim shape it is a perfect size to house in your bag for freshening up when you are out. The product looks expensive and the cylinder is beautifully designed and finished to a high standard.
The fragrance of Rive Gauche is absolutely stunning. It is one of my very favourite perfumes, along with L'eau D'issey. Both I feel have this uplifting quality of fragrance which give a euphoric lift to the senses. Rive Gauche has a beautiful scent which is created by its unique selection of harmonic notes. This is a perfume that has that timeless quality. Created in the 70's, but still extremely valid and pertinent today. It is essentially very French in composition and versatile in its usability and I would say the Rive Gauche is a perfect scent for 'Anytime' and any occasion. It stays on the skin well and dries down perfectly. -

Rive Gauche is a truly beautiful perfume. Whilst looking at which notes this perfume contains, I noticed it has the Chemical Component Aldehydes which gives out a fresh crisp white linen fragrance. I always seem to go for perfumes containing this component. It was first used it in Chanel No 5. The creator of this chemical formula worked in the arctic and he wanted to capture the fragrance of frozen lakes and the smell of water at midnight. A poetical vision I think and I truly feel that he has managed to replicate something very special here with this synthetic component. His idea here was to imitate fresh linen brought in from the frosty air. It certainly has got that pure, fresh smell that represents an essence of nature. Rive Gauche is breathtaking. Pure yet sexy, elegant and very, very French...
'Rive Gauche for Women by Yves Saint Laurent is more than just a perfume. It is a state of mind, a way of living, a way of being, a celebration of the avant-garde and the unpredictable. This blend of rose, oak moss and vetiver is a perfect fragrance for the elegant and independent woman'.

Thank you for reading
I love Yves Saint Laurent perfumes but with two particular favourites. My evening favourite is Opium but my daytime favourite perfume has to be Rive Gauche.
Rive Gauche is a very distinct frangrance, deliciously French and very sophisticated. Once you have tried or smelt this scent you will never forget it. It is difficult to describe as it has nothing to compare or liken it to. In addition, it does smell slightly different on everyone. it is certainly not a sweet scent and I wouldn't say particularly flowery, it is quite citrusy, quite musky and definitely exotic smelling. People associate other people with their scent and everyone will remember that you wear this one. However, some people do overuse this perfume and it can be very overpowering....a simple case of "less is more"
This is a scent that transcends all age groups, I always used the perfume when I was in my 20's but now I find the perfume a bit too heavy and tend to use the Eau de Toilette. The scent is exactly the same just less intense. This is one of the few scents that truly lasts all day.
The packaging itself is very simple, tubular metallic bottle with blue and black horizontal stripes, the bottle is packaged in a box with an identical design. Price varies depending upon where you buy but it is not a cheap perfume. I would expect to pay 28-35pounds for the Eau de Toilette (120ml) and around 45-50pounds for the perfume(15ml). However, since you have to use very little (one squirt of the atomiser, or a couple of dabs of perfume is usually enough) it lasts forever and doesn't "off" or sour as many perfumes can do. Keep the bottle in a dark place, as you should with all perfumes, and it will last a long time.
A couple of words of warning though, my younger son has a coughing fit and difficulty breathing if he comes into contact with the Eau de Toilette just after it has been sprayed......best excuse I have had for keeping him out of the bedroom while I am getting ready to go out...hahah!
Secondly, I cannot wear the perfume it if I am going into direct sunshine, I have a dreadful reaction to it, coming out in very painful blisters that need medical attention........great when you live in Spain, huh!!!! However, the Eau de Toilette seems to be ok.
Incidentally, the name means Left Bank, meaning the Left Bank district of Paris, although i am certain that the Left Bank of Paris never smelt this good!!!!
One final tip on using any perfume, Eau de Toilette or Cologne......dab or spray a little at the nape of your neck, just below your hairline and a little on the inside of the hem of a skirt or top (at the back) and your scent will float with you rather than stick to you.
I would recommend that you give this Eau de Toilette a try but don't overdo it and be careful in the sun. I would also be wary if you suffer from asthma or any other respitory illness as the atomiser is quite strong.
Smell and feel deliciously exotic!!!
If you're looking for a perfume to buy as a present for a lady of any age - then look no further than Rive Gauche by Yves St Laurent. There is a wide range of products from which to choose so you can spend as much or as little as your wallet will allow. The fragrance itself is quite light and not too overpowering so it is equally suitable for wearing during the day or during the evening. It also means that it would be an excellent choice of gift for someone whose tastes you weren't quite sure of. The design of the packaging and the containers holding the perfumes and powders are all a distinctive blue, silver and black, which makes them instantly recognisable as Rive Gauche. The 50ml eau de toilette spray currently costs £26 in the Empire Stores catalogue, but I would imagine that it could be bought more cheaply at one of the many supermarkets that now stock designer perfumes. Rive Gauche is one of the Yves St Laurent classic perfumes having been a favourite of many people, including myself, for many years now. There is a range of sizes available for both the perfume and the eau de toilette, and you can also get talcum powder, bubble bath, body lotion etc. They do a lovely round container of talcum powder available complete with powder puff if you really want to pamper yourself! At Christmas there is also a range of gift sets available. I have found that one of the best places for buying this perfume is Boots the Chemists. They stock a good range and you can either buy them and get Advantage Points on your purchase or alternatively use your Advantage Points to purchase the perfume in the first place. Actually that’s not such a bad idea! If I don’t get any for my birthday or Christmas this year I shall have to treat myself with my Advantage Points shan’t I?
Although I tend to use just one or two perfumes now - ones which are eminently suitable for my years - I used to wear Rive Gauche in my twenties as I feel it is a younger person's fragrance ... with a sophisticated twist, mind. A very distinctive aroma which is difficult to classify, this fragrance you will definitely remember once you have sniffed it. There really is nothing else like it on the market. It's unique *and* because of this you will probably either love it or hate it! It comes in a very stylish bright blue and black metalised 'canister' - very chic and remeniscent of the 80's. Yuppies, shoulder pads etc. in the mid price range it is a lovely perfume all in all and if you are a bit on the unique side yourself, you will love it.
I actually got my bottle of Rive Gauche from my mother after she developed a nasty allergy to it. I absolutely adore this perfume, it smells wonderful. I am not even going to bother describing the smell, taste is such a personal thing that you probably wouldn't even agree with me. I would say that Rive Gauche is ideal if you don't like an over-powering perfume. It is probably not ideal if you suffer from sensitive skin. Mind you, I have sensitive skin and have had no reaction to Rive Gauche. My mother and aunt did both get a horrible, itchy rash which didn't develop until they had been wearing the perfume for a couple of days. If you do fancy this perfume I would advise you to try and nip into a department store and have a squirt every day for a week to see if you develop a rash!
