      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Not a bad scent but unusual in its general demeanour

When my mum decided to pay me a visit in the city last year and wouldn't budge from her bargain saving she got to stay at the Balmoral Hotel, the pair of us ventured out to the city centre to see the shops and for my mum especially, she was eager to do a bit of shopping. She got a bit more than she bargained for when we walked into Harvey Nichols only to be accosted before we got to the "escape route" escalators by a lady of mature years who was stuck doing nothing better behind her YSL counter and decided to do a facial free of charge of YSL products. This as we found out was nothing to do with the fact that my mum just happened to be walking around; the YSL directors team were standing nearby observing the sales assistant and making sure she was been kept in line, selling products etc. I couldn't sit around and watch my mother's face get wider in horror moments later and as she casually rubbed off what the YSL woman put on to stop her looking like a drag queen, I was more or less coerced into the "L'Homme," aftershave but put off by its cucumber tones...

The 50ml bottle of "La Nuit de L'Homme, Eau De Toilette," retails on average between £35 and £43 whilst the 100ml comes in at £75 to £90 depending on the stockist. Harvey Nichols decided it was a good day, and only charged me £55 for the 100ml bottle complete with a free sports bag, an item I'm sad to say has never seen the light of day since! John Lewis currently have the same spray and sizing at £53-50 whilst Amazon list it currently at nearly £42.00 for 100ml. There are other variants of course, such as an aftershave balm at £39.50, an aftershave lotion, 100ml at £40 and 150ml deodorant stick at £19-99 and the shower gel at £21.00 Another store to consider is House of Frasers as they usually have similar prices but also bigger packs of the latter products for £40 to £60.

Just like the old Kouros bottle, YSL have wasted no time in producing a classy and distinctive package particularly as the box it comes in is both a delight to hold and look at. The bottle is quite a good looking item on its own, designed in a dark grey clear glass with the name in black letters and enclosed in a hexagon shape with a matching matt black metal top with an embossed YSL seal. By its own accord though the bottle isn't any different from the usual and more commonly known "L'Homme," by YSL and is just as heavy to hold when it comes to aesthetics and general design. What attracted to me to this fragrance during the short stint with the YSL lady were the immediate positive scented tones of baby powder mixed with a little hint spiciness and tons of sandalwood bouncing off the top layers. Over the salad bowl scent I got from "L'Homme," alone, "La Nuit de L'Homme," appealed to me, particularly in the last year since I've been used to Bulgari's "Aqua Marine," aftershave and Chanel's "Allure."

When I got the classy tightly packed clear cellophane wrapped box home and took out the bottle, as I pulled off the hexagon top, the spray button came off with the lid! I've had a couple of times with this bottle and spray button problem and the only way around this is to be oh-so-gently with the whole product. Once applied, the greater aspect of La Nuit de L'Homme is that it has a very deep-seated aroma of cardoman, almost cinnamon like and something such as mixed spice added in for good measure; lots of positive deepness that I could easily get excited over. On top of that layer you also get a light flowery baby powder scent that gives the fragrance a deep rosy cloud once the spray gets a chance to aerate. YSL claims that Vetiver has been added to the scent and this additive is something I would probably agree with even though there are slight hints of light champagne going down before it gets a chance to sink in. To say that this product has an abundance of flavours would be a major understatement but if you have a sensitive nose like mine, you will get so many different layers going on it can be hard to keep track what is actually coming off the top when initially applied.

Whenever I've worn it though it seems to be very much the kind of aftershave I'd pick for evening wear even though there is no distinct time during day or night that this aftershave comes alive in. My reasoning is that the scents remind me of night time, of some degree of calming quality without annoying the next man or whoever is present. With so many potent notes going on, La Nuit de L'Homme is quite heady and its strength and bold colours really depend on how far or near you spray the fragrance on. The spray itself spreads out a mist of scent and is quite fine in its general direction.

When sprayed directly onto skin such as the neck line and a couple of inches, say 8 inches away, I find that it burns a little on just shaved skin, so it is best to give your face and neck a little time before applying this fragrance or stretch your arms a little more to allow the spray to dissipate freely. Luckily, I find it doesn't leave skin feeling patchy or greasy once it has dried in. Now the complements from lady friends have been in their hundreds since I've worn this so there must be a great deal of attractant in this product alone!

The immediate downside to this fragrance is that it doesn't last very long from its spicy makeup. It vanishes into thin air almost immediately after it is applied and although it leaves skin feeling slightly sporty the overall hue of spice diminishes fairly rapidly without warning. What La Nuit de L'Homme does instead is retain its strong scent on skin for a good couple of hours, changing from top spices to heart warming vanilla and amber so even if my neck isn't sending out "invisible waves" of aftershave to interested noses, loved ones can smell the scent easily when they come close to my skin.

La Nuit De L'Homme is a quite an understated fragrance that is quite showy and dress like in its appeal. It is the kind of aftershave that a man could easily get away with at formal occasions but still have enough scent on him to appeal to his other half without being too clingy or sticky. It certainly possesses a Chameleon like quality, going from heady spice to heart warming sweet tones without inducing sickness. Although it is a pricey product, it does help to shop around, particularly as some department stores such as John Lewis have larger ranges of stock on offer or House of Frasers stores where prices are at least, competitative. As such I'm holding out for another version of this fragrance. I've only had it for a year but it still making an impact on me and the fact that it doesn't die down into base and stale alcohol after tones is enough to make me think it is still worth considering again after my original bottle finishes off. Thanks for reading! ©Nar2 2010
