Smeg FAB32
by sparkymarky1973
Whilst looking around for a new Fridge Freezer a few months ago, my eye was caught by this retro-looking appliance that resembles something straight out of another era. A big fan of the T.V series Red Dwarf, I also found the name of the manufacturer more than just a little bit amusing.
If you scour the internet then you might ... find yourself being put off by this ever-so-slightly expensive fridge-freezer. Reviews are mixed with many people claiming they are not worth the money you pay for them and no more than asthetically pleasing at best. But thankfully for me, this opinion was balanced by that of reviews on Dooyoo here and from my father-in-law who has owned a similar model for several years now and had little complaint. These latter kind of ressured me as, with a hefty price tag of a little over a grand, I had begin to have a few doubts about buying this product. Still, if you are thinking of buying one, may I suggest you consult your own sources first (be it your friends and peers or the Internet) as, being quite expensive as this product is, only you can decide whether or not you buy one. All I can offer you are my own experiences which so far have been largely favourable.
The fridge area is of a good size and holds a good, reasonably sized quantity of food! It has four toughened and sttengthened glass shelves and these are easily adjustable to your own height preferences and there are four trays situated inside the door also, for handy and effcient storage. All of these can be quickly removed for cleaning though I would suggest being careful because they do appear a little flimsy, though I haven't managed to break any yet, and I have heard they can be expensive to replace should you damage them, though, like I say, I have had no problems.
Underneath, the freezer looks smaller than I am used to and this is my one of the few complaints I have, as I would have liked a bit more space but I suppose I can't moan too much as this Smeg model appears to keep things much better frozen than my last fridge/freezer and holds a better temperature than many others I have known. How much of this is down to it being new though remains to be seen.....
My other complaint is that there is no Auto-defrost, something I would have liked for my money, but again, this is a small niggle.
Overall this retro fridge/freezer is nicely designed, looks cool and funky and is perfectly streamlined to fit in any modern kitchen. There are a few things I would change ~ stronger-looking door racks, an Auto-defrost function ~ but nothing that makes me regret my purchase and the fact that it has a high energy-economy rating means it is cheaper to run than most other makes and brands. Also it is VERY quiet and always makes me think of a submarine on silent-running! Would I recommend this make and model to anyone else? If you have the money certainly. It is a bit of an extravagance but a little bit of cool in the kitchen never did anyone any harm and it is always a talking point whenever we have anyone over!
Perhaps the dictionary should review its definition of the word, Smeg! In our house at least, it has stopped being a pseudo-swear word and now represents the very essence of style and cool!! Read the complete review |

Smeg FAB32
by BumpyBump
When I bought my flat three years ago I decided that even if I skimped on everything else I would definitely be buying a Smeg fridge-freezer. I managed to find it online for a knock-down price of £1100 and had it delivered for free for that price. After years of living in shared accommodation and having just a shelf in the fridge to call ... my own, the luuxury of having three shelves and two salad drawers almost sent me giddy! The freezer is slightly smaller but it still has two good-sized drawers and a top compartment which I find plenty for storing weeks worth of food in.
I get loads of compliments from people when they see my Smeg and several of my friends have now said they're buying one based on how great mine is. And you can get them in a whole range of colours so everyone will be able to find one that suits (mine's in pastel green and it is beautiful).
It has an energy rating of A so you can feel guilt-free about the environment whilst keeping your food cold and I use it for about two years before it needed defrosting and, when I did, it took just two hours.
In short, these things are amazing and I can't recommend highly enough. They are expensive but you will have it, and love it, for years. Definitely worth the investment. Read the complete review |
