Purchased by my husband, king of kitchen gadgets for.. a small fortune actually. I'm not sure exactly how much but over £100. A lot, compared to the price of most deep fat fryers.
The idea is that you put a teeny tiny amount of oil in, and rather than soaking in it the arm sweeps everything about and it gets fried but in MUCH LESS oil and you don't die early of a heart attack but still eat chips, hurray. I understand the idea. However, it turns out that a huge reason why I like chips is that they taste like delicious greasy oil. This made crispy chips that my husband liked but that I found a waste of chip eating.
I might still have tolerated it for the sake of my husband but sadly (ha!) we broke it and we're still not sure how. Things seemed to get stuck under the arm a lot and need releasing, and eventually after a couple of months the arm just stopped moving. Maybe we overfilled it? It didn't seem like we were. Thankfully, our return was accepted and we got our money back.
Back to delicious greasy chips for us. This product is not recommended.
We've had our acti fry for over two years now, so I thought that it was about time to review it! It was given to me and my partner when we first moved in together as a house warming gift and we were really pleased to receive it - especially me because I had seen them around and heard all the hype about them and I thought they sounded fairly good. I'm not sure how much money my partners parents paid for our acti fry, probably a lot more than the current retail price as like I said it was over two years ago when the teaspoon-of-oil deep fat fryer was a much newer concept, but the current price for an acti fry varies from around £100 to £200 depending on where you buy it from and which model you buy. We've got the AH900240 model which is the large family sized one and it has got a 1.5kg capacity.
The retail price for this is currently £199 on amazon so it isn't cheap and I wouldn't pay that amount of money for one personally because I'm not really a fan. I thought that I would love my acti fry because chips are one of my favourite foods seeing as they're so versatile and the idea of healthy chips really appealed to me, however from day one I've had problems with getting the chips to taste right and have the right consistency and I don't think I've had a single nice batch of chips from the acti fry. Also, after around six months of having the acti fry the lid stopped closing completely which let a lot of heat out and the chips were a.ways quite soggy feeling and looked burnt around the edges even though I would always prepare the chips properly and put the right amount of oil in.
You get a green plastic spoon which comes free with the acti fry and I found that I needed to use two spoonfuls of oil to get the crisps to taste decent and not be bone dry. The machine itself is easy to operate, it plugs in at the wall and has got a round plastic case with a black pan which is removable, to remove it you just flip up the handle and lift it out. This part of the machine is dishwasher safe and is always easy to clean up. The rest of the machine doesn't get dirty or greasy but if it does get dirty for any reason when I'm cooking other things I will use tissue to wipe any marks off it. The machine is easy to use, all you need to do is chop up your potatoes into chips, make sure that you dry them before you put them in though or the chips go really soggy and don't cook properly. Then you need to put the lid down and set the time and the time then starts counting down.
I found that 25-30 minutes was enough time for the chips to cook. The LCD screen which displays the amount of time left before the chips are ready is really easy to read. Once your chips have cooked the machine will beep to let you know they're done whilst the chips are cooking the machine is fairly loud. When opening the lid after your chips have cooked be careful because a lot of hot air is released. You can see the chips through the lid when it is closed which is good as I'm able to make a judgement on if they look cooked or if they need a bit longer. The chips aren't great and as I said before I've never really had a nice batch.
I like my chips crispy and golden but the chips that this thing produces are more soft and there isn't a crispy skin on them, the texture isn't to my taste, however my partner does really like the chips from the machine which I was surprised by - he loves junk food and fatty food so the fact he likes lower fat, non greasy chips really surprised me. We used this machine a lot for the first few months but then the novelty wore off and it now lives in the garage, my partner will get it out now and again if he fancies some chips but can't be bothered to go to the chippy or if he's feeling healthy! Unfortunately I don't recommend this machine purely because I don't like the texture or taste of the chips it produces, and also because of the lid not closing properly after only six months of use, however because it's easy to operate and the chips are healthier than your average oven chips or chip shop chips I'm going to give it 3 out of 5 stars.
The Actifry is a useful cooking aid. It is rather bulky and heavy thus it must be positioned where it is going to be used. It cannot be positioned under cupboard units as it puts out a lot of heat. Chips are crispy and only take a little oil to fry with very little mess as the inner pan is removable and can be washed in a dishwasher. The recipe book which comes with it is very helpful and the recipes are not too difficult. They are basic everyday recipes and are very tasty. It keeps hot quite a while after it has been used and the bottom becomes hot thus I bought a heat resistant glass work top saver to protect my work surface. The outer casing is easy to wipe clean and the grey lid is removable and can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Over all, I am very happy with my purchase.
i love my tefal frier its the best, and you only need a little oil to cook with, it turns the chips round untill they are cooked, it takes a little longer then the avarage frier, or alot longer, but the chips are tastey and worth waiting for, you can also you this for cooking other things like roast potatoes, or roasted vegtables like carrots parsnip i think you can basically use it as a hot pot maker, you can also cook meats in it, which is really great, you get a really really crispy skin on chicken legs, and chops taste divine as when the lid is down it keep it jucier than in the oven, i would recomend this to people who like to experiment with foods and different ways of cooking it. i use mine every day and my chidren like it to very much. thank you
