Advantages: Easy Roast Potatoes - Great Chips and Wedges - Nice and Healthy
Disadvantages: A little noisy maybe - Some concerns over durability
I have owned 2 Tefal Actifry's since 2008. I bought my first one to try it out as it was a revolutionary new way to cut out the majority of fat from fried foods. The Actifry works by superheating and recirculating air inside it's cooking space while automatically rotating your food around it's pan with a rotating paddle on a central spindle. This is great because you don't have to stir your food while it cooks! The small amount of oil that you put in is a only a fraction of what you would normally use to fry foods, so it therefore adds very few calories from the cooking fat/oil to your food making it vastly more healthy, and in my opinion much more tasty too.
The reason I have had 2 was both a negative and a positive point to make.
I'll get the negative out of the way first.
The lid is not quite as rigid as you would expect, especially the 2 plastic clips that are all you have to close the lid securely. After several months use, and cleaning the lid in the dishwasher, eventually both of these clips broke off. This meant that I had to buy a replacement lid which I found on eBay for around £25. However shortly after using the replacement lid, the heating element in the back of the Actifry burnt out meaning that I had to dispose of the whole thing. So for me build quality and durability was a concern.
However, now back to the positives.
I tried to go back to cooking roast potatoes and chips without having an Actifry and it just was not the same. I eventually succumbed and bought a replacement for the broken one about 6 months after it had broken. (I got this from Dixons for around £135). I was so happy to get this back again !
The clips on the lid had been slightly improved and although still made of plastic, I found them to be more durable.
The reason that I bought a replacement despite my concerns was that I just love the way the Actifry cooks potatoes, whether chips or wedges or roast potatoes. Whenever I cook a roast dinner, I no longer par-boil the potatoes and then roast them in lots of fat. I simply cut the potatoes and put them in the Actifry with a few splashes of Olive Oil and 40 minutes later they are cooked perfectly! They come out lovely and crisp and are nicely cooked through. It takes a lot of hassle out of a roast dinner! As for chips, well I used to avoid those because I am watching my weight. No more. Homemade Chips are now firmly back on the weekly menu and I don't feel guilty eating them and have even been losing weight. The chips or wedges come out absolutely lovely even when you only put a small dribble of oil in the Actifry.
The Actifry also comes with a good recipe book and I have tried recipes like the Sweet and Sour Pork and Pineapple & Chicken recipes. All of these were lovely. The only negative on using the Actifry this way is that the middle stirrer paddle can easily discolour if you do this style of cooking too much, but a dishwasher usually brings it up quite well.
I have been using my newer Actifry since September 2010 with absolutely no problems, and I have recommended it to everyone I know.
Summary: Great healthy way to cook
