Tefal ActiFry Low Fat Electric Fryer
I first heard about the Actifry in a newspaper article which gave it a good review but although it seemed like a good idea the cost was around £140 which put me off buying one at that point. A few months later we found one in Costco for £100 so we decided to give it a try.
I can pretty much live without chips and I'm happy to nip to the local takeaway to satisfy the odd craving but my partner and his son would happily eat chips with every meal if they got the chance and oven chips don't get the seal of approval from either of them so the Actifry seemed like a good idea.
The Actifry is a unit containing a metal nonstick coated bowl with an angled paddle in the centre that moves around continually turning the food over so that everything is evenly cooked the lid is made of clear plastic so you can see how ready the food is without stopping the machine or removing the lid.
The Actifry is advertised as only requiring a spoonful of oil for enough chips for a family of four and at only 3% fat it's healthier than deep frying and the results are good enough to please the chip lovers in our house. The chips are perfectly cooked every time and if using frozen chips you can get away without using any oil which I discovered by accident when I forgot to put the oil in! It does take slightly longer to cook chips than a deep fat fryer would but you don't have to heat the Actifry up first just throw the chips in and it's ready to go and at least you don't have to watch them as they cook I find skinny chips take around 15 minutes and fatter chips around 23 minutes.
The Actifry can also be used for cooking other foods such as curries and stir frys which can be handy if you are trying to do other things at the same time as cooking dinner just throw the ingredients in and leave the Actifry to get on with it the moving paddle keeps the food turning over so there's no need to stir the food or worry about burning stuff in the bottom of a pot.
One of the great things about the Actifryer is it's a lot safer than using a deep fat fryer here's no hot oil to accidentally splash yourself with and not much chance of late night snack starting a fire if the person falls asleep after setting the timer they'll wake up to cold chips which is a lot nicer than waking up to find the fire brigade kicking the front door in!
There's not much chance of accidental burns with this the outer unit does get warm but not hot enough to burn and the handle of the bowl stays folded into the unit until you release it but even with the handle out the unit is pretty heavy and it's unlikely a small child could pull it over.
The Actifry is a great alternative to a deep fryer for mess free chips the lid stays on during cooking and there's not enough oil to splatter surrounding areas when you are removing the chips. It's easy to clean after use as the lid, bowl and paddle are removable and are dishwasher safe for those lucky enough to have a dishwasher for the rest of us they can be cleaned easily with soapy water but avoid using harsh scourers which might scratch the non stick coating.
We've had this for around 2 years and although it still works the lid on ours now pops up randomly without pressing the release and the inside coating is starting to show slight signs of wear but it has been used regularly in this time and it still does the job. I would recommend the Actifry to anyone looking for a healthy alternative to a deep fat fryer but it's a shame it isn't a bit cheaper as the price will put a lot of people off.
Summary: Guilt free healthy chips!
