Tefal ActiFry Low Fat Electric Fryer
Advantages: Timer, Easy to clean, tasty chips
Disadvantages: Doesn't taste the same as my fish shop chips!
The Actifryer doesn't just cook chips it does also allow you to cook a range of foods such as meat casseroles and fish.
I must admit I haven't used it for that purpose yet but once I do I will update the review.
I have recently however, used my Actifryer to cook frozen over chips which it also states you can do. The frozen chips tasted even nicer than the chips I normally cooked. They tasted more like ' naughty chips' than the chips I had been making from Maris Piper potatoes, which I Peeled cut and put in the Actifryer.
At this moment in time the price for this Actifryer is £100 including delivery at Amazon. Which is a real bargain! Especially if you will use this a lot! I personally bought it for £123, which at the time was the cheapest I could find it for and this was purchased at a designer outlet at the Tefal shop. At amazon at the time I think it was around &125-£130 and this was only a month ago. So if you are thinking about buying an Actifryer I do recommend getting in there soon because I highly doubt the £100 price tag will stay.
This product is big. Which for someone like myself who has a fairly small- medico size kitchen it is a bit of a problem. However I have found a big enough drawer to put it, thankfully. If you have a big kitchen you could just keep it out on the side so it wouldn't be much of a problem if you don't mind that added clutter. However, for someone who has a small kitchen I would recommend finding a place for it first before you purchase it or some work top space!
The Actifryer I purchased is white. The reason for this is the black one was sold out and when I want something I have to get it! I'm terribly impatient so I decided to leave waiting for the black one to come in stock and go for the white one. To be honest if I had a big kitchen and was to leave it out I probably would of waited for the black one. But knowing most of the time it would be in a cupboard I didn't think there would be much point.
How does the Actifryer cook chips?
Well first of all like I stated previously you have to purchase some potatoes that are good for making chips. The book I received with the Actifryer recommended Maris Piper or King Edwards's potatoes. I personally use Maris Piper.
I then peel the potatoes let them soak in cold water and then cut them into chip shape sizes. In the Actifryer recipe book it tells you the exact sizes they recommend which can be helpful if you have never cut potatoes into chip sizes before. However, I just blagged it and did them a size I kind of guessed would be right.
I then add the potatoes to the Actifry and add a spoonful of sunflower to the Actifryer. A green spoon comes with the Actifryer so you can get the exact measurement right. Also don't worry about pouring the oil onto all the chips before you turn it on because the way the Actifryer works means it will disperse all the oil evenly onto all the chips. If you cook frozen chips it is recommended not to use oil. There is a timer with the Actifryer, which you can set how long you want to cook the chips for. This is really handy because it is pretty loud when it goes off.
A great aspect to this Actifryer is that it's really easy to clean. Something that people with a chip fryer would really be surprised at. I have personally never had one of those but my boyfriend's mum says it's a nightmare to clean! Anyway, the reason this Actifryer is so easy to clean is because you just lift up the base of it, which is kind of like a pan, and then wash it in soapy water and because very little oil is used it only takes a minute or two to clean! It is fantastic for that, no one likes to stand at the sink for hours scrubbing right? Also the Actifryer is dishwasher safe another really handy aspect of the Actifryer.
How does the chips taste?
Well I guess this is the most important question of all. The product may be easy to use, easy to clean and so on but it is more important that it cooks chips to a good standard because otherwise what really is the point in the product? Well I will be perfectly honest with you. I personally love greasy 'naughty' chips. (Something most people would hate the sound of) so I must admit the chips do not taste 100% the way I would personally have them. But that's ok, I cannot expect the chips to taste like chips from down the local fish n chip shop because lets face it, they are cooked in a lot of oil. These chips aren't so they are bound to taste healthier and not greasy. But as far as healthy chips are concerned I do believe they are great! They are very fluffy in the middle and with a bit of salt and vinegar I would say they are pretty yummy!
So my conclusion is that the product does deserve 5 stars. Yes ok, it doesn't taste like my favorite yummy greasy chips but no one could possibly expect that from 3% fat chips right?
The product is incredibly easy to use and really easy to clean. I definitely could not live without my Actifryer!!
Summary: Love it!
