Lakeland Stainless Steel Straining Funnel
by thriftygiftyisme
=Lakeland Stainless Steel Straining Funnel=
We upgraded to a Stainless Steel Funnel, about a year ago, as we had been using plastic ones, but since the deep fat fryer we had the oil needed emptying before you could put the fryer away, and also I have started making jams and needed some help at getting the jam into the jars ... safely without getting burnt.
=Lakeland to the rescue=
Whilst having a wonder through Lakeland, I saw this funnel and was extremely impressed that it had the ability to strain, which with the oil of the deep fat fryer, prolongs the life of the oil. The funnel was priced at £9.49
=Buying=
This is a Lakeland own product and can be brought in the store or ordered online for delivery to the store, or for home delivery.
=The funnel=
This is a stainless steel funnel, and so is the straining disc, this can be removed from the funnel should you not need it. Should you want to use the sieve, there are two small spikes which the disc clips into, and it has a lot of small holes, which would stop orange pips going through.
=Diameter=
The diameter of the funnel is 5 inches in diameter.
=Using=
This literally cuts the time of straining the oil by half, and it is easy to clean the filter after use, I use hot soapy water.
=Additional Uses=
This can be used for many uses from straining lumpy gravy, to help get the jam into jars, this literally comes into it owns.
=Would I recommend=
I would highly recommend the funnel, I have had mine about 12 months, and it is excellent, it looks as good as when I brought it, it is easy to use, it cleans well, generally for me a 5/5 product. Read the complete review |

Hand Pump Dynamo Torch
by thriftygiftyisme
=Hand Pump Dynamo Torch=
=Why did I buy=
I love the Pannier Market in Tavistock, South Devon, and when we are on holiday in the area this is one place we always visit, it is like an Aladdin's cave.
On a visit a couple of years ago we saw this Hand Pump Dynamo Torches, we only paid 50p so we brought 3 to start ... off with, one of each of the cars, and the third for when we took the dog for a walk in the evening.
=Charging=
No batteries required, in this day and age that is not a saying we get to hear much. On one side of the torch you have 2 small slide like controls, these on mine are a white colour, the 1st (nearest the bulb) is the on / off switch which you just slide, the second is towards the bottom of the torch is a lock switch for the hand release function which charges the torch.
=The charger=
You just squeeze this with your hand as it fits in the palm of your hand perfectly and you just squeeze, it doubles up as good exercise for the hand. Even just 30 seconds of squeezing would get you at least 30 minutes of light.
=The light=
There is two bulbs that make up the light in this, and it is perfectly serviceable in the dark, we use ours when we walk the dog on the Moors at night.
=Additional Torches=
We were really impressed with the torches, that we went back and got about 10 more. We have them in the bedrooms, we all have metal headboards, so just pop one of these on the end and it's not in anyone's way.
=Sleepover=
When my daughter has a sleepover she and her friend use my double bed, and I have my daughters room, in my room I have one bedside cabinet, so when her friend stays she thinks the torch is brilliant as she can just grab the torch and use it to find the way to the toilet without having to wake my daughter to turn the main light on/
=House=
There's upstairs on the landing, downstairs by the front door, one in the under stairs cupboard, for reading meters, and also handy is the power goes.
=Car=
There in the car, incise we need to read a map, we breakdown and in the boot.
=Handbag=
Not that we women actually carry everything but the kitchen sink, but I have one in my handbag, finding keys in the dark, again they literally have 1001 uses.
=Quality=
These are not the best of quality, but for the job in hand they are worth more than the money paid, I have seen them on sale in eBay for prices up to £2.00
=Would I recommend=
I would highly recommend these torches, they come with a little strap that you can easily slip over your wrist.
Don't leave home without one.

Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash System
by jjrose
It seems that these days we've been bombarded by the idea of trying to be clean and free of bacteria / pathogens as much as possible. I have seen many adverts about anti-bacterial gel and other plethora of anti-bacterial products. I have seen this Dettol No-touch hand wash being advertised so many times before and I though it is a very ... nifty idea. I am very sensitive to bacterial and fungal infections and I always try to look after my hygiene. Therefore when I saw this product on offer at Boots, I decided to try it.
When I bought this No-touch hand wash system, it was retailed for £5.99, reduced from £11.99, so I thought it was a good buy. The product comes with the main no-touch soap dispenser, a refill pack and AA batteries to power the dispenser. The one I bought is called 'Cucumber hydrating splash'. The packaging is quite difficult to open if I'm being honest, even with the use of scissors and a bit of swearing. However, I managed to get it open. The no-touch soap dispenser itself is quite a good size, and goes quite well in our bathroom. It has a tiny, narrow transparent window to let you know how much soap is left.
How does it work? It's a no-touch system so you just have to put your hand under the dispenser and tiny amount of soap will be dispensed. The good thing is there's no dripping and the amount dispensed each time is not too little or too much. So, in terms of being an anti-bacterial product, it has a good idea. However, it don't think it helps that I still have to touch the tap for water. When it comes down to it, it really is an exercise in futility. It would obviously work better if your bathroom has a sensor tap of course.
The disadvantage of this product is the sheer price of cash that needs to be followed up to keep using this product. Firstly, it runs on two AA batteries, and although it lasts for quite awhile, they still needs to be replaced in the future. Also, the soap refill: the empty soap container cannot be refilled with just any soap. I had to throw away the empty and buy another refill, which is retailed around £3.00 but it may be on offer occasionally. Each refill lasts for 2-4 weeks depending on how many people are in the house really. In the long run, this is worse than buying a cheap printer and then have to splash out on ink cartridges afterwards.
Overall, I do like the idea of no-touch hand soap system, it really seems like a waste of money when the anti-bacterial protection is lost as soon as I have to touch the tap to turn on the water. If the price is comparable to normal hand soaps that are usually sold for £1.00, then I would go for this. Otherwise, I am impressed and disappointed about this product at the same time.
