Eddingtons Onion Goggles
by headsore As a family we like to do a lot of things together and we cook a lot together too, as it is enjoyable and a nice way to spend quality time. Occasionally the little lad will also join in, but that is mostly at weekends. Me and my other half enjoy making big family meals such as spaghetti bolognese and lasagne and a lot of tomato based ... recipes - most of these require onions and that is where this review will come in handy. Everyone knows how hard it can be to see clearly if you are chopping your onions and then your eyes start to water. Some people suffer more than others. Both me and my other half suffer from this problem and we were increasingly finding this a problem as were were trying to chop our onions and chat at the same time over the kitchen workbench. Then we discovered Eddington's Onion Goggles and we have never looked back. At first we bought just the one pair but then there was an argument over who got to wear them so eventually we bought another pair so now we have one each. They are both in pick which I was a little bit worried about wearing initially, but I soon got used to the idea. They look more like glasses than goggles and are a perfect fit for both of us as we have similar sized heads. They are in pink with a white trim and very attractive to look at and suitable for both men and women we think. As we eat onions on a very regular basis (most nights) we each wear our Eddington's Onion Goggles as we chop together and discuss the day's events, safe in the knowledge that our eyes will not water. The glasses are made of clear plastic and what I really personally love about these is the fact that no matter how many rings we have turned on in the kitchen or how much condensation there is, the glasses never get steamy because they have anti fog lenses and they REALLY do work. The other thing I really like about them is the fact that they have a foam strip on the inside of the lens and this works remarkably well at keeping an excellent seal on the face and prevents the vapours of the onions coming up and making your eyes water. Briliant invention! They really are very effective and not only that they are fun and attractive at the same time - so you get the best of both worlds! They come in their own attractive clear plastic case and are very durable as we have been using them most nights now for months. Greatly recommended. Read the complete review |

Eddingtons Onion Goggles
by k2705 I was recently given a pair of Eddingtons Onion Goggles. To be perfectly honest when I saw these I had no idea what they were or that this sort of thing even existed, to be honest they looked like a dodgy pair of glasses, the idea of the glasses is to prevent your eyes from watering when cutting onions, probably a very good invention ... for people who do suffer when cooking with onions. Anyway instead of having them just sitting in my draw without actually using them I decided to give them a try, really just for a laugh, and I have to admit I did feel rather silly wearing them. Basically the idea of these glasses is to keep away from your eyes the vapours released from onions when they are cut up which irritate them and make them water, meaning you can cook with onions without having to dry your eyes every few minutes. The glasses to me look a bit like dressing up glasses that children might play with, they are made from plastic with oval shaped lenses containing clear plastic, the pair I have have are actually pink with the word Eddison written along the arms in white writing, I think the Eddison Onion glasses come in other colours aswell as the pink. You wear the glasses just as you would a normal pair of glasses or sunglasses, the arms are curved at the ends slightly more than a regular pair of glasses to help keep them in place whilst cooking and chopping your onions. The inside of the lense area is outlined with black foam, this is designed to create a seal when you are wearing them keeping out the vapours from the onions which irritate and make your eyes water, it is this foam seal that actually makes these goggles 'onion proof' the foam keeps the vapours from getting to your eyes, in turn preventing them from becoming irritated and watering as you are cutting up onions. I also found the foam made them very comfortable to wear and it created a cushion between the plastic of the glasses and your face I did think the foam would feel bulky and get in the way but I found that it moulded itself very nicely to the shape of my face creating the tight seal keeping out the onion vapours aswell and making them extremely comfortable to wear. The onion goggles are shaped so that they will fit most shaped faces, they are also described as being unisex, to be honest though I cannot really see many men wearing pink onion goggles as they cook the diner, I couldn't really see many men wanting to wear these anyway no matter what the colour, there's no way my fiancé would wear them. The oval shaped lenses are quite large meaning you can easily see what you are doing, they are also anti fog lenses meaning that they will not steam up whilst working in the hot steamy kitchen, I was a bit dubious about this as I have had other glasses and sunglasses which claim to be anti fog and they still manage to steam up slightly, I was quite impressed with this aspect of the glasses as I found that they hardly steamed up at all whilst I was cooking, I did bend down to the oven a few time and noticed they did mist up slightly from the intense heat of the oven, but generally they stayed perfectly clear the whole time I was wearing them .In order to keep your Onion Goggles in excellent condition them also come with a storage case to keep the lenses scratch free, personally I find this useful as it means they can be kept in the kitchen draw with all of the other cooking utensils and I know that other sharp objects will not scratch or damage the lenses. As I have mentioned my Eddison Onion Goggles were a present, however I have done a bit of research and found that they can be bought online from www. cookability.co.uk and cost £7.95, to start with I did think they were a little expensive for what they were after all they are only a plastic pair of glasses with foam around the inside of them, however if you do suffer badly when cooking with onion as some people do I think they would be well worth the money, £7.95 is a small price to pay if it means you can successfully cook and chop onions without them irritating your eyes and making them water or sting, so I do think that the price they are being sold at is fair. Also I noticed that at the moment every time a pink pair of Eddison Onion Goggles are bought a donation is made to Breast Cancer Charity which I feel is an excellent idea. Personally I do not really suffer too badly with onion vapours irritating my eyes and can quite happy cut up onions with very little problems so I very much doubt that this would be a product I would choose to buy myself. However when I did give them a go I did find that to my surprise that they worked, as I have said I do not have any major problems with cutting onions but slightly stronger ones do make my eyes irritate very slightly but whilst wearing the goggles I could not feel any of the vapours going into my eyes at all. I think that the Eddison Onion Goggles would be excellent for someone who suffered badly when cutting up onions as the foam seal of the goggles really does help to keep the onion vapours away from your eyes, and the large anti fog lenses means you can easily and clearly see what you are doing without them misting up from the heat of the kitchen. Overall I would recommend this product especially to those who are sensitive to onion vapour, £7.95 is not a lot to pay out if it means you can cook with ease and without the problem of watering and sore eyes, for me I did feel a bit silly wearing them and have to admit I haven't worn them since but generally I think the Onion goggles are a good idea. Eddingtons Alligator Onion Chopper
by sympatic My eyes are very sensitive to the vapours given off when chopping onions and it always makes them sting and weep, I used to wear a pair of swimming goggles to stop this happening which seems a bit excessive however since buying this manual chopper I have found it to be less of a problem, while it is sold as an onion chopper it will also ... chop other vegetables as well such as small or halved potatoes and carrots. To operate I first peel and then halve the onion, this is the only time really that my eyes are at risk, then you pop the half into Mr Alligator and then press down firmly and voila you have a lovely chopped onion. You do not have to be shy when giving it a good press and the first couple of times I was a little feint hearted however now I have the technique the gadget works wonderfully well. In addition if you want nice even slices of carrots for dipping then this device will also do the job for you and it is great for preparing other veg as well. It is about 4 inches in height and 11 inches long and is made from a very hard white plastic with the cutting area at one end and a perspex cover that rise up from it and houses the finished sliced onion. This area has a green base and there is some green trim on the hinged end and it houses the cutting blades. There is a sliding little bit of plastic that moves between the blades after cutting to get any bits of residual food out to help with the cleaning of the device. When you have sliced the onion you turn the device upside down and all of the onion collects in the perspex lid which you then remove ready to use the sliced onions or whatever other vegetable you have prepared. Afterwards I have found it pretty easy to clean and then just leave it to dry naturally as it would be a bit fiddly to leave a cloth, it is also dish washer compatable as well. I paid just under £20 for mine which is about average for this product, it is a nice little device and as it does not require electircity you can take it away on a camping trip as well. This is the main reason I did not buy a similarly priced electrical one. Read the complete review |
