Acctim Saxon Alarm Clock
Advantages: Reasonably priced, easy to use, no batteries required, loud enough to wake me up.
Disadvantages: Cannot see the glow in the dark pieces properly.
As we live in a newly built property it's fair to say that we have had a few little niggles, power surges causing things to trip during the night and various other things became the norm for the first few months in our flat and it was for this reason that I spent £4.80 on this Acctim Alarm Clock, in gold, from Amazon about 6 weeks ago.
This alarm clock is around 400g in weight so is nice and lightweight if I have to pick it up in the morning. The clock itself is about 8-10 inches in height and it has two little angled feet that help it to stand up on my bedside table easily. The face is quite round with glass protecting it and it's easy enough to read the time with minimal effort and from almost any angle in the bed. The face of the clock is white and the numbers are black with black minute/hour hands & a gold seconds hand. The minute/hour hands have small green strips on them which are glow in the dark but I find these strips quite ineffective as you'd have to be very close to the clock and really strain to make out the time because while there are small dots by the numbers of the clock these aren't effective and don't show up, however, as I have the clock on my bedside table it's easy enough just to touch my lamp to see what the time is.
This clock requires no batteries as you simply have two knobs at the back, one to wind up the movement of the hammer which bangs the two large bells on the top and one to wind up the ticking of the clock. I find that these twisty knobs can be quite hard to wind up fully so I usually ask my partner to do this once a day and this is more than sufficient to ensure that the tick lasts for a full 24 hours before it needs winding up again. Also, with the hammer knob fully wound there is a good 15 or 20 seconds of continuous ringing of the two bells which is more than ample to get me out of bed in the mornings. To change the time the alarm goes off is nice and easy but there is no exact time like you get with a digital alarm clock. It's quite easy to guess roughly when the alarm will go off within a few minutes as you can see from the small dial on the clock face that you are setting the alarm to go off to a rough time. There is no exact science to this but it's quite easy to know when it should be going off so I usually just aim for 5 minutes before I want to be awoken and this works fine.
Overall I would say this alarm clock is very easy to use. There is no reason why you need ever replace anything on this providing you take care of it. This alarm clock has been dropped off the bedside table several times now and it's still worked fine each and every time. Apart from taking a few seconds each day to ensure it's fully wound up there is no maintenance required and you are helping to be environmentally friendly by not using another battery or two every single year. I am very impressed with how sturdy this alarm clock is and the fact that I paid under £5, with delivery, is one that I am very pleased with. We have been using this alarm clock for a few months now without any problems and it never fails to wake me up in the morning. The ticking is obviously quite loud but then there are a few clocks in our bedroom and I find it quite therapeutic to count the ticks if I can't get to sleep and I'm drifting off before I know it. The alarm bells ring out quite loudly and it's definitely enough to rudely awaken you in the mornings but sometimes a gentle shake or light mobile tone is just not enough. Also, I know with this alarm clock that it won't fail during the night or decide to just not go off at all like my iPhone alarm did recently so it's fair to say that I will be relying on this to get me up for work for many more nights to come.
Summary: A fantastic alarm clock from Acctim that wakes me up every morning without fail.
