Acctim Saxon Alarm Clock
Advantages: Wakes you up in the morning!
Disadvantages: Keeps you awake at night!
This is a very typical looking alarm clock - the one you see depicted jangling in cartoons and very much reminiscent of days gone by in terms of its style and iconic appearance. In these days when everything seems to be electronic, it's refreshing to know that you can still get these old standard clocks - they've been around for as long as I can remember and although like most other things they have been updated, they are now regarded by many as vintage or retro.
We acquired ours about 2 years ago, when for no discernible positive reason, I bought a box of 12 clocks at auction for £5. I really didn't need 12 clocks, but when we got them back, we found that 6 of them worked, 3 were broken beyond economic repair and 3 others too naff looking to contemplate using in the house.
This one took my eye straightaway as I remember having one in my bedroom at home. I introduced it to the bedroom the same night, wound it up, set the alarm and lay back to drift off into The Land of Nod. Well, you will be way ahead of me now, because this clock makes a helluva racket. If it isn't tick-tocking, it's tock-ticking and it's one of those insistent noises that you can't get used to or ignore. The noise even interrupts your sheep-counting and you can't hear yourself think.
I had never previously argued about a clock before, but we did that night and although it lasted one more night, it was then banished to a spare bedroom and deemed to be unliveable with!
Not before it woke me up with a start the first morning, sounding just like that clock that goes off on the Dark Side of the Moon album. I nearly jumped out of my skin. In fact, it was the first jump I had had in a while and it isn't good at my age!
Of course, this is a wind-up clock and once you have set the time and wound it up and set the switch on the top, then it will certainly wake you with a start. It's all mechanical, of course, so there isn't much that can go wrong with these other than possibly over-winding. You have only one ring tone and that's your lot - makes it easy to choose.
Of course, although it will rouse from slumber even the heaviest sleeper, it will not work if you fail to wind it up before bedtime and fail to set the switch to the right position. You also have to remember to set the time accurately, for if you forget to wind it up, the clock will stop and will start again from whatever time it stopped at once you wind it up. This could result in your being rudely awoken at 3 in the morning.....and then not being able to get back to sleep becasue of the infernal ticking! Best to wind it night and morning to avoid this happening.
Ours is the traditional brass colour, but the chrome one is also popular and I have seen coloured ones as well.
As I said, we couldn't get used to the loud ticking and the alarm was a bit too loud for my liking so it is now seldom used. It looks great where it is in a spare bedroom where we have a retro theme, but it isn't often these days that it is pressed into service.
What cannot be denied is that if you get your bit right, it certainly meets the main criteria of an alarm clock - i.e. waking you up! For that reason and even though it isn't now in regular use in our bedroom, I will give it a big loud retro 4 stars.
Summary: A true cacophony of sound - enough to make anyone pull the blankets over their head
