Amco Lemon Citrus Squeezer
Advantages: Efficient, easy to use and well designed
Disadvantages: A bit garish
Squeezing lemons is probably one of the simpler things you may need to do from time to time, depending on what you need lemon juice for. However, there comes the time when you feel you're losing half a lemon and are fed up with picking the pips out of everything you use lemons for. Enter the lemon squeezer. Coming in at a not-cheap price which I've seen range between £5 and £10, it's still worth having.
Generally, I find that having one for limes is more useful, particularly as I find more use for lime in drinks. However, this lemon squeezer is ridiculously easy to use and clean, and is very efficient, indicating a well designed product. It's pretty heavy, which initially is a surprise, as I don't think I've used something yellow that's also made out of metal. It's a dull heavy metal too, designed to be effective as opposed to lightweight. This in turn makes it durable and effective in its job, which is simply to squeeze lemons.
The idea is, like most lemon squeezers, to cut a lemon in half first. What the squeezer effectively does is substitute your hand when compared to the standard squeezer which has the 'moat' area around the pointed central cone upon which you place the lemon before pushing down and twisting. Here, though, there's no need for pushing and twisting as the squeezer will do it all for you. It consists of two parts, hinged together in a flexible manner to give a complete 180 degree pivot and well as some slight sideways manoeuvrability. At the ends there are two concave semicircular parts, one which has a few holes in, the other ridged on the interior. Putting the lemon in with the exposed flesh facing the holes, you can close it and squeeze the handles together and the juice comes through the holes.
It really is as simple as that, and you don't even need to use much force to be honest. The first few times I used it, I misjudged how hard I'd need to squeeze and ended up using more juice than I intended, but this is soon countered by the fact that you're likely to get more juice from this than other products. I'm not sure what the metal components are made of, but it's certainly effective and when you've squeezed all available juice out, you end up with a virtually flat disc inside. Again, with limes this is really good because I often then include the entire flattened half lime in the drink, but I wouldn't do this with a lemon. It is however rather useful for knowing that all juice is out and it compacts the lemon for discarding.
I suppose another benefit of using this is to keep your hands clean. Incidentally, lemon juice rubs into your hands very well, is a good way of cleaning your hands to a certain extent and helps moisturise them. However, I can understand not wanting to get lemon on your hands and so this is very handy because of this. Once you've finished with it then it's very easy to clean as long as you do it immediately. You may not be able to just rinse and have done with it, it requires a bit of a scrub to make sure any remaining flakes of lemon are gone, but this is very easy to do and there are no awkward nooks and crannies for things to get stuck in.
It's a little unsightly if I'm honest. The yellow is somewhat garish and in a relatively plain kitchen it may stick out like a sore thumb. We have snippets of colours so it's actually okay, but it's certainly worth noting that the yellow is pretty bold. There are also green lime squeezers and orange squeezers that are a duller orange than this one is yellow, although to be honest as long as you have regular sized fruit you should be able to use any of these fruits in this squeezer.
Is this of benefit? Yes it certainly is. You don't waste any lemon, it's quick and efficient and easy to clean and keep. Well designed and worth a purchase if you gadgets like this, but if you don't really want to or can't justify spending close on £10 for one of these then it's not like you won't be able to squeeze lemons without it. Recommended.
Summary: Efficient if non essential lemon squeezer
