Advantages: Good range loud, portable, value for money, clean and neat looking
Disadvantages: None
My doorbell has been pretty rubbish for absolutely ages and just got worse when I had decided to paint it to try and improve the look of it. This was obviously a mistake and so instead of just a bell that wasn't very loud I now had one with flaking paint that would get stuck when someone pressed it too hard and continually ring for ages until I got a knife to prise it back out. I finally decided to bite the bullet and just buy a new one after the postman delivered me a package and it took me 20 minutes to get the bell to stop ringing.
One of the reasons that I had put off buying one for so long was because although I will spend hundreds buying a new phone I begrudge buying something practical. Ridiculous reason I know but that's how I feel so I was really annoyed that I had to go out and spend money on a new doorbell. I also thought that they were much more expensive than what they are. I picked up this one after a friend told me about it and was really pleasantly surprised to see that it only cost £5.99. My local Argos didn't have it in stock but I thought it was so cheap that I made a special trip to the next nearest town to pick one up.
The doorbell is exactly what I was looking for. It is completely wireless and is so easy to install that even the worst DIYer (i.e. me) can set it up in minutes themselves with no complications. The doorbell comes in two parts which are the receiver unit and the doorbell itself. There are also some screws and brackets as well as some straightforward instructions.
This was simplicity itself to set up and there is no complicated wiring to worry about as it actually works on batteries instead of being connected to the electric.
I just had to prise the old doorbell off the front door and then stick this one in its place. This was simple as the bell fit perfectly over where the old bell had been and it comes with a sticky pad already on the bell to stick it down. You can screw it in but I really didn't feel there was any need as it was pretty secure when stuck down. The bell also comes with an included battery so make sure and install this before sticking it down.
One you have the bell attached to the front door you then need to put some batteries in the receiver unit. It takes 3AA batteries which aren't included but luckily are a pretty common size so most households should have some lying about as I did. Once the batteries are in the receiver unit you are ready for action.
The doorbell is pretty standard in its range of features as its only feature really is that it rings but to be honest who wants anything else from a doorbell. There is only one sound to choose from but this suits me fine as it is a pretty standard bell sound and that's exactly what I wanted as (apologises if I offend anyone) who wants something tacky playing anytime someone comes to the door.
The volume of the bell is quite decent and it can be made louder which helps at night if I have the TV on and have forgotten to take the receiver in to the living room with me. The ding dong sound of the bell is usually enough to be able to make itself be heard over the TV or music and I really like the fact that I can take the receiver into whatever room I am in so that I can be sure to always hear the bell. You can attach the receiver to a wall in the hallway if you want but I like the flexibility of being able to carry it to other rooms with me if I want.
The receiver has a range of 30 metres which is really good and more than long enough for my house. I can even take the receiver into the back garden with me and shut my patio doors and still be confident that I am not going to miss someone at the door.
Apparently something which I have just found out is that all the Argos bells are on the same frequency as each other which is something that I hadn't considered. This means that if your neighbour also has the same bell then you your bell will ring when someone is at their door and vice versa. This hasn't been a problem for me but it is something to consider when purchasing it. At least you will know why your bell is ringing and no one is at your door if this happens.
I have been so pleased with this doorbell and would happily recommend it. I think it was such a bargain for £5.99 and I have been happy with everything about it so far. It is so much louder than my old bell and to my knowledge since buying it I haven't missed anyone at my door when I have been in which is something that happened loads before I got it. I am also pleased with how much better this has made the front of my house look. Before I had an old brass bell which I painted in a black gloss which looked awful and really made my front door look scruffy. This bell is a simple white and looks so much neater and more modern on my door and I am no longer embarrassed when someone rings my bell.
