Advantages: Large Display, funky colours
Disadvantages: N/A
The 'Aurora Alarm Clock' is a time keeping device with a difference.
Not only does it efficiently tell the time on its large digital display, but it also acts as a soft light, chaging through twelve different colours.
The unit itself is a white cube with a base roughly the size of a drinks coaster. The front of clock displays the time and date, and also the name of the day in small letters. As the numbers are fairly big, viewing the time is easy first thing in the morning when you may be a bit bleary eyed.
Underneath the device there are four buttons which are used for setting the current time and the alarm time. The process is fairly simple once you've got the hang of it, and is explained fully in the instructions.
Below the buttons is a swich which can be moved into two positions. This controls the lighting effects which are the centrepiece of the Aurora's design. The first position is called 'demo', and when selected will light up the device and cycle through the available colours. It's a function primaily used to show what the machine is capable of, and won't be a mode which you will continually use. The second position, entitled 'on', forces the light on permanently - I would imagine this would be use if you want to read by the light that the clock produces - although it's fairly dim and you may get eye strain!.
The real beauty of the Aurora clock is the way it works at night. If you want to see the time in total darkness, you merely tap on the top of the device, which will then illuminate long enough for you to comfortably read the time. Each hour is will be represented by a different colour, for example if you tap the unit at 4pm, an orange glow will result. The same 'tapping' motion (or often in my case 'hitting' motion) will turn off the fairly loud alarm, which is useful as you don't want to de searching for little buttons to press early in the morning.
The alarm clock takes 2 'A76' batteries (button cell) to power the clock and alarm, and 4 'AAA' batteries to power the light. You can also use the power adaptor which comes packaged with the unit, which will cut down on the running costs. In fairness, if you only use the light on the product at night to check the time, then the battery life is very economical.
Costing £13.49 from Amazon, I would definitely recommend the Aurora Colour Changing Alarm Clock. It's a great novelty for adults, and may be also used to comfort children who are afraid of the dark.
