Advantages: Price, size, durability, number of functions

Disadvantages: Display mode for answers

I have to have a scientific calculator for my course and have needed one since GCSE, so I bought this some years ago. It still works perfectly! Mine has a dual component to it - solar panel and battery so I can use it in any conditions and not have to replace the battery so often which is a major bonus as my previous calculator battery died just when I needed it most! It costs around £7.99 (in most stores and online) which isn't very expensive for a good quality basic scientific calculator especially from a trusted brand like Casio.

The calculator itself is very light and compact so it fits easily into a bag/is easy to carry around day to day if you need it regularly. It also has a hard plastic casing including a lid so it's quite durable, I've never known anyone to break theirs. The screen has a hard protective plastic above it (very transparent it doesn't affect the view) which is better than some calculators that just leave the film which is prone to breaking - thankfully this calculator circumvents that.

It's very simple to work, the number pad is at the bottom with the basic + - / x = functions. All of the others are in a smaller key pad in the middle of the calculator, some you need to press shift or alpha for (as there are too many functions to fit on one calculator) but this is easy to figure out and doesn't use much more effort than the other buttons. It does every function that you will really need on a basic scientific calculator.

One annoying point about the calculator is that when I get an answer it gives it to me in a fraction. There must be a simple way of fixing this on the options menu but I can't find it, and neither could my tutor when I gave it to her. This means that you have to press another button to get the number and decimal view, which although isn't that taxing, it's still annoying.

Overall, this is a well priced durable calculator suitable for the majority of scientific calculations. It may not be suitable for someone doing complex maths/physics but it definitely has enough functions to cover most subjects. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a reliable calculator but not significantly invested in it to spend a lot of money.

Summary: Excellent calculator for anyone on a budget and needing basic science functions
