I have had this calculator since I started my GCSEs - that's over four years ago. I have used it right through my GCSEs and A levels and it still works in the condition it did from day one, which is quite astonishing. It's a very reliable gadget and popular amongst students even to this date. It is great for all subjects ranging from mathematics to physics and business studies. It has many functions, which enable you to perform a variety of different things.
The calculator is dark grey and comes with a lid, which simply slides over the buttons to protect it. When using the calculator, you can slide the lid onto the bottom, so your calculator comfortably sits on the lid. This way, you won't lose it. A standard number pad in grey buttons with white writing is on the bottom half of the calculator including all signs such as multiplication, division and plus or minis signs. There is also a decimal point for use with decimals.
On the top half of the calculator are black buttons with white writing, which look very strange, complex and confusing at first. However, their functions will become clear to you as you advance through courses - especially mathematics. If you do mathematics to Advanced Level, you may encounter topics that will require some of these buttons such as logarithms and exponentials and of course - everyone's favourite: trigonometry. Above the black buttons is a set of light grey buttons, which includes shift and alpha. These are like the shift button on your keyboard, and enable you to access more functions, as keys will have more than one action. There is a directional pad in the middle, used to scroll through digits on the digital screen so you can place the curser and delete or add where you want. There are also 'mode' and and 'on' button. The mode button gives access to all different things, which may be used in statistics for example. The calculator is a lot more capable than it even looks; it has many features and you will need such a calculator if you do choose to do Advanced Level mathematics and even other subjects like physics and chemistry.
The top of the calculator has a solar panel, which is great as it uses natural light to prolong the battery. With all classrooms having adequate light, this enables you to run the calculator on the same battery for.. years! After almost 5 years, my calculator still has a decent display and isn't faded. The addition of the solar panel is brilliant as the calculator doesn't need much energy to work anyway, so can almost solely be powered by the solar panel.
The calculator is very well made and resistant to drops such as when you're walking into the exam room with shaking hands. Not only is it ideal for students, but may be useful for certain job areas where mathematics come into play. With 7 screws in the back, it won't fall apart easily. The lid is great as it protects it too, but note that you're not allowed to take these into exams nowadays as they contain some formulas on the inside. The lid has a Casio logo on the outside and is dark grey to match the base of the calculator.
Overall, this is a superb gadget and pretty much necessary if you're studying maths. It can be bought for around £10.00 in shops that haven't renewed their stock, as there are newer versions out there now. Considering some more advanced calculators are banned from exams due to their functions, you would be better off taking this calculator into an exam as it's allowed and already has a whole host of functions.
