Advantages: A good party gimmick
Disadvantages: Chocolate went everywhere, you have to add loads of oil to the chocolate, doesnt flow right
My sisters 30th birthday was coming up and we were having a party for her. I thought a chocolate fountain was a great idea and it would look really good on the table with all the other food around it. The fact that im a complete chocoholic too made me want to buy it even more.
I went to Argos and had a look through their fountains and decided to buy this one by Cookworks. I thought it looked really good as it was silver and would be a big hit. It cost me £24.49 which i thought was an ok price for it.
I bought it and read the instructions. The one thing that i thought was really weird was the fact that it said to add oil to the chocolate before you poured it into the fountain. Vegetable oil mixed with chocolate sounded a bit disgusting to me so i didnt tell anyone else there was oil added to it just incase it put them of.
I melted the chocolate as described and poured it into the bottom of the fountain. I had expected the chocolate to cascade down and flow really well and look funky. Instead, it came down in horrible drips and looked really rubbish.
I thought it would have looked really professional but it just looked quite cheap and tacky. Also when i tried to pour the chocolate into it, it went everywhere all over my white linen tablecloth. I still cant get the stains out of it!
I read the instructions and it said the chocolate would flow properly if it was on a level surface. I set it on about five different level surfaces and there were still only dribbles of chocolate coming down, i was gutted!
Everyone liked it though and i had bowls of strawberries and marshmallows to dip into it. The chocolate tasted nice but was a bit sickening and i couldnt taste any oil from it.
The worst thing was that it wastes loads of chocolate and is an absolute nightmare to clean out! It took me at least 3 hours to get all the chocolate cleaned out of it and has put me off using it again.
This would be good for a kids birthday party maybe but i wouldnt be bothered with using it again as its too much hassle and a bit disappointing.
Summary: A bit rubbish

- 10/10/09 Good review although it would be handy to know if any of the parts are dishwasher safe.
The reason oil is added is to make chocolate flow a lot easier - mass company chocolate like Cadburys and Galaxy have oil added to them already whereas Green & Blacks organic don't have as much. |
