Advantages: Ease of use

Disadvantages: Price

When my boyfriend and I moved into our new flat, we only had a really bad can opener. Actually, I don't think it is fair to call it that as it didn't actually open any cans. It would pierce a hole in the can and that was all. We would then have to put a sharp knife in the hole and continue to open the can by sawing it open. Obviously, this is not the ideal way to open a can. While I was in Sainsbury's one day, I finally remembered that we needed to get a new one. While looking at them, a regular tin opener cost around £5 which I thought was extremely expensive while this Culinare MagiCan Can Opener was £7. For an extra £2, I figure I might as well try something different so this is what I chose.

== Claims ==
The MagiCan claims that this is the bestselling can opener in the world and that it has a patented cutting system which cuts smoothly on all types of can. The cardboard packaging has these claims on it and it was the smooth cutting which made me buy this product. I think part of the difference between this can opener and other cheap ones is that the blades are made from stainless steel which helps to prevent rusting etc. which can cause rusting after washing the blades so many times.

== Appearance ==
While many/ most general can openers are silver in colour and made from metal, this one is white and made from plastic. The size of this can opener is roughly 16cm in length and 5cm in width which does make it quite chunky. The plastic feels strong and sturdy to the touch and is comfortable to hold in the hand. Underneath the twisting mechanism are the metal blades. There is one larger cutting blade and a smaller one with rough edges which holds the edge of the can. The blades are nicely hidden due to the size of the main body of the can opener.

== Using the can opener ==
Can openers are a pretty easy gadget to use and I don't know of any household that doesn't own one so I'm sure you all know how they work. The handles of this one do need to be opened to the fullest to even be able to use this product. Once you have done this, you can grip the can opener to the can and then close the handles again when you will hear a click. This will form a tight grip on the rim of the can and you can begin to turn the handle in a clockwise direction. Once you are turning the handle, the can opener does smoothly remove the lid from the can. As the handle is large and chunky, it means that you can keep hold of it easily while in the process of opening a can instead of cheaper models which are thin and flimsy and harder to hold.

As I said earlier, as you grip the edge of the can, a clicking sound will happen. This is something that affects opening the can. Once you have successfully removed the lid, it will still be attached to the MagiCan and the clicking noise is why. The MagiCan locks the lid onto the blades so that you can remove it safely without danger of cutting yourself. You do need to use a little bit of force to pull the lid away from the can but nothing excessive. Sometimes the MagiCan will remove a slight slither of the label of a can so just watch out for this going inside the can.

This can opener will only open round cans so corned beef cans etc. will need to be opened with something else.

== Overall ==
I am so glad that I paid an extra £2 for this compared to a normal can opener. It is so much easier and quicker to use as there aren't nearly as many problems. The MagiCan can be cleaned with your normal washing up and we have had ours for 3 months now and not even a slight hint of any rusting going on. Although this does seem expensive for what it does, I think it's going to last a hell of a lot longer than other can openers.

Summary: A great can opener
