Culinare MagiCan Opener
Advantages: Easy to use and store away, opens cans quickly with no fuss, readily available
Disadvantages: Not an exciting piece of kitchen equipment
I enjoy buying things for the kitchen. Not been able to do it as often as I would like, but I mostly love to buy things that make my life easier, especially when it comes to cooking, baking and storage. One area that doesn't fill me with excitement is owning a can opener. Lets face it-we all need one, they are useful, but they don't fill me with that warm feeling inside. This is probably why for my whole adult life Ive always bought the cheap, metal ones that you can normally find even from the corner shop for around 99p. But on one fateful day I broke a habit of a lifetime and I bought this from Sainsburys for £3.99.
Why did I buy it?
My cheapo can opener had died and I needed another one urgently! You forget how much you need something like this until it goes AWOL or simply doesn't work anymore and then you need to open a particular can.....
Ive been told off by my other half about buying the cheap can openers as he can never use it, and I have to replace them regularly. He had been bugging me for months to buy a ' proper ' one, and now I thought I might as well. The price wasn't too high, and I was hoping the longevity of this one would be better than the previous.
How does it look/How to use?
Its white, so no issue in regards to would it suit all kitchens, very neutral and safe in colour. Made of some form of plastic. Length is 6 inches and width is 2 inches. Very light weight and quite chunky in design.
To grip onto the can, there is a small curated circle, with a slightly larger and smoothed edge circle a small distance away from each other with the second circle positioned at an angle ( this area is positioned at the top of the can opener underneath ).Two thirds of the way down the can opener, it splits into two to form ' handles '. When you close these two ' handles ' together, the metal circles come together, when you open them the circles are apart. So once you put the can opener on top of the can with the handles opened, shut them and the metal circles grip onto the can, you turn clockwise the small handle on the top of the opener and this will cut all around the top of the can.
How to clean
I wash these like I do any other small kitchen tool of this nature, which is with warm soapy water and then dry with a kitchen towel.
How does it perform?
It does really well. Firstly, because of the design, size and shape of this its very easy and comfortable to hold. Its quite dense despite being light weight, so you don't feel as if you have to be softly softly with it.
It doesn't require much strength or energy to turn the can opener, so very easy to use. When the lid comes off the can, the edges are reasonable smooth ( not perfectly smooth ), so I don't feel I have to be overally cautious with removing the lid, but obviously I still am out of health and safety.
It easy too clean, and very easy to store away as it takes up only a small footprint, so gets thrown into the draw with the cutlery.
Would I buy this again? Yes I would. Not too sure whether they do this in another colour, but would love it in black or silver! So maybe different variations in colour would be appealing. It's a good product, priced well, does the job with minimal effort so no complaints here. But I still have a small place in my heart for the cheap metal openers.....
Summary: Good buy
