Advantages: No hands, no mess, no fuss can opener

Disadvantages: A bit pricey and not a necassery item for all.

I've struggled with my old blunt can opener for ages, never considering there may be an easier way to open cans. However on a very recent visit to my Grandmother and seeing this in use in her kitchen, I ended up bringing it home at her insistence.

The Product.

The Culinare One Touch can opener is a battery operated tin opening mechanism. Made with solid white plastic you simply place the devise over a can, press the large button and the battery operated motor works the two blades in much the same way as an ordinary manual tin opener. A magnet keeps the tin lid in place, and the whole process takes around 30 seconds. It requires 2 AA batteries which last a good length of time, although rechargeable versions are available at extra cost.

My Grandma bought this at TJ Hughs for around £15 she says. Although the RRP seems to be £20 it is currently available at Amazon.co.uk for £8.95.

My opinion.

I have to say this is a pretty impressive little gadget. It works an absolute dream taking lids cleanly of cans with no mess whatsoever. Its simple to use, easy to clean and store. It is a bit noisy, but that lasts 30 seconds so I can forgive it that.

However, in all honesty, if my Grandmother hadn't insisted I take it, I probably wouldn't have forked out for it. It's good, but not necessary so I would have eventually replaced my old blunt tin opener with another cheap manual one. However my Grandmother has severe arthritis in her hands, so for her this is an absolute blessing and a kitchen utensil she now can't do without (she headed right off to Hughs the next day to get a new one). For people who struggle with mobility in their hands then I would recommend this as an essential. For those who don't, it's great if you can afford it but you could live without it.

If you would like to see this can opener in action, go to YouTube and type in its full name for a video demonstration

Summary: I love it, maybe not £15's worth though.
