Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash System
Advantages: Doesn't look ugly and dispenses the correct amount of soap
Disadvantages: More hassle than an ordinary manual pump dispenser
Purchasing the Dettol No-touch Hand Wash System has really made me wonder. Don't you think we have been absolutely fine dispensing soap from a pump all this time, rather than leaving the job to a machine? I have to admit though, the way it was marketed really caught my attention. Yes, I admit it, after watching the advert and walking past it in the shops for weeks I felt that my life now warranted the use of an automatic soap dispenser. I even remember saying to myself, "If Tesco toilets have automatic soap dispensers, then I need one!" When I brought it home and set it up, I felt a deep feeling of great satisfaction, instantly followed by absolute hatred towards myself. It really hasn't made my life any easier.
When you bring the Dettol system home, you are greeted with plastic packaging, which in the past has brought me lots of pain and anger just trying to get through the stuff. However, to my surprise the packaging was incredibly easy to open, thanks to its simple hinged design. Once you get the product out you are faced with an instruction manual, which in my opinion, seemed totally pointless. The writing was completely ignored and I simply looked at the step by step diagram which told me everything I needed to know. Setting up was easy. Make sure the switch on the rear is in the off position and place the batteries in the battery compartment located on the bottom of the device. Once you have done this, you place the liquid soap container into the top of the device, switch it on and you are ready to automatically dispense soap at your hearts content. Setting up is incredibly easy, if my review was merely about that, this product would have received a 5/5 review. Unfortunately, that is not the case. There are just too many negative points to this product which outweigh all of the positives. One of them being, how awkward it is to have in the house. You see, the problem with it is, it doesn't sense a hand as such, but anything which moves in the sensors path. So, you could be innocently tidying in the kitchen around the device, you think you've not set it off and you carry on cleaning, when 3 seconds later you hear it activate. You are now left with a blob of soap just where you have wiped clean. It's not that much of a problem at first, until you go to correct the mistake. You grab and move the device like you would anything else in your home and you set it off again! Unless you constantly remind yourself to turn it off before you move it, you will do this very often. This got that annoying I stopped using it. Before I stopped using it I did have many more problems similar to this which also contributed to leaving it to collect dust.
I purchased mine for £4.99 from Morrisons complete with liquid soap and batteries. At that time it was on special offer and I do believe it normally retails at £6.99. The re-fills are expensive, around £4. I would recommend re-filling the container you received with the device, with your ordinary liquid soap. It will save you money, not a lot but at least you're saving!
Design / Look
Manufactured in plastic and available in "Stainless Steel" finish, which looks like grey plastic to me, and white. I bought the "Stainless Steel" finish but I do prefer the look of the white one. It is a solid piece of kit and doesn't look out of place at home.
This product is nice to look at, seems like a great idea at the time but it will inevitably lead to dissapointment, anger and will become a nuisance, well, it did for me. I would recommend you stick with what has been on the market for years, but, if you really do want one don't waste your money on the re-fills and remember to turn it off before you move it! I give this product an overall rating of 3/5.
Summary: A nicely designed product which will be inevitably replaced by the more successful manual dispenser.
