Advantages: Looks good, trusted brand
Disadvantages: Price, and ongoing costs
I have seen these advertised on TV and in magazines, and I knew it would never be something that I would bother buying. I am very much of the opinion that you need some germs in your life to build up a resistance. I have a couple of friends who are obsessively clean and they are always ill! I like things clean obviously but I do have more important things to worry about!
However, I was lucky enough to be sent one one these to review. I received the dispenser, the soap refill and it came with batteries already in it. I set it up straight away to give it a go.
The unit has an on/off switch at the back so you can turn it off when not in use for a while or when refilling it. A special soap bottle refill clicks in to the unit, it comes with a sticker on the bottom on the soap that you remove and then put the refill in place. Turn the unit on and wave your hand underneath and hey presto soap appears!
I was very happy that the soap came to an abrupt stop as I was a bit concerned you might get that annoying drip after you had moved your hand away thus making a mess. The dispenser itself is quite compact and doesn't take up much more room than say for example a bottle of Carex soap.
The soap that came with the dispenser has an Aloe Vera scent and is very pleasant and they smell stayed on my hands long after washing. The dispenser runs on 3 x AA batteries. I have yet to find out how long these will last, but it is a downside that you keep having to pay to run it. The refills retail for around £2.99 each which is rather more than I care to pay for soap. I have two under twos so I plenty of nappy changes during the day so soap is used in abundance in our house.
The dispenser itself retails for £11.99 I think this always includes one soap refill. I personally would never pay that much for this. To me it is just a gadget and by no means a useful piece of equipment. I will buy the refills for it if I see them on offer, but I won't buy them at full price.
Dettol are a well known trusted brand, and their products are good. This is well made and doesn't feel cheap, and if you hate germs so much you don't want to touch the soap then this is for you.
But can someone please tell me the point of having a no-touch hand dispenser when you still have to turn the tap on and off with your hands?!?!?
Summary: More of a gadget
