Advantages: Cheap Fresh Yogurt that's better than the shops

Disadvantages: None

After going to our local garden centre and seeing the easiyo starter kits we thought we would have a look on the internet to see if there were any bargains. After finding the kit on Lakeland we bought the Yogurt maker and a pack of 6 Bio-Natural Mix yogurts.

My mum use to have a yogurt maker when I was younger which had 6 little cups that you put in a unit and the cups got warm, but it never made yogurt it just turned out like thick milk so we were a bit sceptical about this maker, however it has been briliant.

So far we have gone through 5 of the 6 packets and have been impressed by each one, we always keep 4 tablespoons worth at the end so we can make our own by adding the 4 tablespoons of yogurt, 4 tablespoons of milk powder and fill up with milk, we usually get another 5 lots this way before the yogurt starts to get runny. You can do the same with shop bought yogurt but from what i've read it always says make sure it has live cultures in it, but I thought that's what yogurt is?

The mixes that come with it are very simple to use, you empty the sachet into the yogurt pot, half fill the pot with water, screw the lid on and give it a good shake to mix it all then take the lid back off and fill to the line with more water then put the lid back on. It is usually messy at this point as the yogurt that is on the inside of the lid drips down the side of the pot so you might find it better to give it a rinse before reinstalling it.

We have tried mixing strawberry sauce, Jam's and honey (separately of course ;) ) to the yogurt and are all good for a healthy snack and are so much better than the stuff you buy in the supermarkets without any additives.

The maker itself works like a flask, the lid twists on and off and is easy to do as it only need about 1/4 of a turn. Inside the maker is a red divider with a hole in the bottom, this divider indicates where you have to fill with boiling water and acts as a platform which the yogurt pot rests on. You pour the water through the hole and to the top of the divider, put the yogurt jar on top and then lock the lid on, when you come back in 8 hours you will have lovely thick yogurt and a no mess maker to clean as all it requires is the water to be emptied and then a quick wipe and dry. It actually tells you not to submerge in water.

If you keep some of the yogurt behind to reuse, it makes really cheap yogurt as if you buy 6 packs at around £10 and then make 6 litres with each pack you effectively end up with 36 lites for a tenner.

We have found that it would be good to have another 1 litre yogurt pot so we could be making some and have some in the fridge ready so you always have a supply or somtimes you get caught without any.

Summary: If you like yogurt then this is definatly a must buy, it is so easy and cheap too.

I have one of these. Expensive to buy but helpful if you eat lots of yoghurt.
