Advantages: Ease of use make it when you want it
Disadvantages: cost I guess
My mother gave me one of these for Christmas. I don't think I would have bought one for myself . If anyone but my mother had given it to me I probably would have off loaded it to the nearest charity shop - but I knew my mother would be keeping a good eye out for it !!
When I was a student I had a yoghurt maker which was 6 small cups and plugged in. I think you must have had to use starter yoghurt. I used it about twice and threw it away - it was dreadful.
The EasiYo , on the other hand , really couldn't be easier. It is , essentially , a big thermos flask. So , to make yoghurt you put the kettle onto boil. Open a packet of easiyo mix ( greek is my current favourite and take the lid of the bespoke container. Fill it a quarter full of cold water and then pour the powder in . Put the lid on and shake as enthusiastically as you can manage. Top up with cold water and shake again ( lid on of course !! ). By now the kettle will have boiled and you fill the flask to the mark and put the container in.
Leave for 6 to 8 hours - take out - and there is nice firm set yoghurt.
Each packet of mix makes a litre ( and that is the size of the container ). You can add sugar when mixing up but I prefer to add stuff after.
Very easy and I like the texture of the yoghurt which comes out fairly firm. The taste depends on the mix you buy but the Greek is fairly authentic.
I have had one failure - put the container in the flask and then filled up with hot water . Still had liquid 8 hours later - otherwise success all the way and that one miss was clearly my fault !!
They tell you to put none of the bits in the dishwasher but I always wash the container in there without any trouble.
The cost ? Supplied by trusty old Lakeland. The flask and bits are just under £14. The mixes ( 5 packets ) around £10 so about £2.50 for a litre of homemade yoghurt. Probably can buy for less but the convenience is very handy.
Yes I know you can do yoghurt the Blue Peter way with the starter and a bit of tupperware and the airing cupboard but this is neat and easy.
Summary: Its a handy little gadget
