Advantages: Never need to buy batteries for it

Disadvantages: None

I got this torch as a Christmas gift off one of my aunties and when I unwrapped it I thought "wow a torch". Yeah its just what you want on Christmas day isn't it, it will provide the house with hours of entertainment and its something I've always wanted. Needless to say I thought it was a pretty crap present but practically speaking it is a fantastic product and in my opinion pure genius.

The thing that separates this torch from most other torches on the market is that is doesn't require and batteries to power it. It works through a principle known as Faraday's Law of Induction. This Law is that any change in the magnetic environment of a coil will "induce" voltage in that coil, which means electricity that can they be converted into light energy.

The torch contains a metal coil and a magnet and when the magnet is passed through the coil, by shaking the torch from side to side it charges up a battery and the electricity lights up the bulb at the end of the torch and hey presto you have a light.

The torch is about 25 cm long and is made out of translucent plastic which means that the inner working of the torch can be seen in action. The torch has an on/off switch on the top so that you the energy created by the coil and magnet can be stored and then only used when required.

The torch I must say has been very useful and my parents keep one in their caravan for when they go away and swear by it. It doesn't take long to charge it up either, 30 seconds of shaking will charge the torch for around 5 minutes and the light it emits can apparently (according to the box) be seen from a mile away.

Another little extra that I particularly like is that it's waterproof and actually floats on the water so it would be ideal for any water pursuits.

I would recommend one of these torches for anyone who is outdoorsy kind of person as its light and there is no danger of the batteries running out. I've had a scout round on the internet and found one priced £12.99 on www.internetshopuk.com.

Summary: Great torch
