Advantages: Cheap, creates perfectly formed meatballs, easy to clean
Disadvantages: None for me
My son's favourite meal is spaghetti and meatballs so this is a meal we have regularly in our house. I used to just purchase a pack of ready-made meatballs from Tesco's, but I found that little by little, the prices started to rise and so I decided to have a go at making my own from scratch. Not only would this be a cheaper way of creating this meal, but also they would be better for us being home-made.
When discussing meals with my friend, she told me about a utensil she brought from Tesco's in order to make the perfect meatballs and so I went to purchase one myself. I too, purchased the Kitchen Craft Meat-Baller from Tesco's at a price of £3.50, which I thought wasn't too bad.
The utensil is looks like a combination of a pair of tongs and a pair of scissors. The base of the utensil is like a pair of scissors in that it has two looped metal parts for you to place your fingers in and you use your fingers to open and close the tongs. Each 'tong' has a hollow, half circle bowl shape at the end and when the tongs are closed together, the two pieces fit together to make a whole meatball.
You can either place the mince into the two domes and close it together, or you can just open the tongs up, scoop the mince into the domes and close it to form your meatballs.
The meatballs are a decent size and the great thing about a product like this is that you can have a home-made product, made from your own recipe but they look as good as they would in a packet as without this product, you can't get a perfectly formed ball shape no matter how hard you try so although this product is really a luxury, rather than a necessity, it is a really handy product to own to make perfectly formed meatballs and it most certainly improves the presentation of your dish, which is especially handy if you cook this kind of meal for people outside the family.
This utensil is made from a non-stick stainless steel type material so is really easy to clean and is dishwasher safe too.
Overall, I think this is a really handy kitchen utensil to have around for making meatballs and although I personally only use it for meatballs, you could also use it for creating perfectly shaped balls with other ingredients too so it is quite versatile. It is cheap, well made and does the job well. It creates perfectly formed meatballs which taste home-made but look a lot better than I could personally create without the aid of this utensil and therefore it comes with a recommendation from me.
Summary: A great tool to aid the preparation of meatballs
