Advantages: versatile - holds a full size cake, or standard or mini size cupcakes
Disadvantages: none for me, well maybe the fact that it takes up a lot of room in my fridge
I'm always baking cakes, cupcakes and cookies. 5 days out of 7 I would say that there's always a delicious smell of baking wafting from my kitchen. I regularly take my baked goodies into work to share with my team (primarily to stop myself from eating a dozen cupcakes or a whole cake to myself, as my husband doesn't really have a sweet tooth), and I also regularly get asked to bake cupcakes or a cake to take along to a party.
I used to just transport my cakes in either a tin or a tupperware container, however this could be a bit hit and miss, as a lot of the time the frosting on top of the cake or cupcakes would get bashed or squashed as the tin or container was not really deep enough. This was mainly a problem with cupcakes as I always use a lot of frosting on cupcakes. I found the perfect solution to my transportation problems in Lakeland - the cupcake caddy.
I've had this for about 3 years now, and it's had absolutely loads of use. It currently retails for £21.99 in Lakeland, I think that I paid under £20 for it 3 years ago though, maybe £18.99 or £19.99. Yes it is expensive, but it's been absolutely worth every penny, I would definitely recommend it and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
Its basically a carrying caddy to carry and transport your baked goodies. It is really versatile as it will carry either 12 standard size cupcakes or muffins, 24 mini size cupcakes, or a large cake. The cupcake caddy consists of the base itself which is big enough to hold a large cake, or 2 smaller cakes, I normally carry either a large 9'' round cake or 2 1lb loaf cakes on this. There is then a removable and reversible insert which stands on the base and which holds your cupcakes, depending which way up you place the reversible insert then it will hold either 12 standard or 24 mini cupcakes. Then finally the lid or cover which clips into place over the base, and attaches securely onto the base using 4 sturdy plastic clips, 2 on each side of the base. The lid is a white creamy plastic enabling you to see through to the contents inside, and has one sturdy handle on the top. The lid sits quite high off the base itself so there is no risk of any of your frosting getting damaged or squashed.
If I am transporting cupcakes in this then I find it easier to put the un-iced cupcakes into the cupcake caddy and then to frost them whilst they are in the caddy, this then stops any damage to the frosting when you are then moving the frosted cupcakes over to the caddy. I then just need to pop the lid on and secure it, and my cupcakes are good to go. A slight drawback to doing it this way though is if I then need to store the cupcakes in the fridge before I transport them, the cupcake caddy is really quite big and so takes up a lot, and I do mean a lot of room in my fridge. It literally fills a whole shelf, and so I need to be organised and have the room available in my fridge if I'm going to do this.
All of the parts of the cupcake caddy are made from plastic, it's a sturdy plastic though and it will support the weight of very heavy cakes. I handwash all the parts of my caddy purely because it's so big - it would virtually fill my dishwasher. My caddy is still in perfect condition, no cracks or breaks or anything - and it's had an awful lot of use.
This is easy and convenient to use, and it's a very safe and secure way to transport my cakes or cupcakes. 5 stars from me.
